    3. Mary, I guess this is what our list is all about. So many kind people have given me info. Thank you for thinking of me as well. I will not be in charge of the cemetery transcription, just a helper. I will add my name to the list of "walkers" when the organization is done. Was your g gf involved in Avondale? Did you find him on the list of buried victims at Washburn that was sent to me? I will send it to you if you missed it. Thanks again for the info. 1. [PA-LAC] Avondale Mine Disaster - David JAMES
    2. Hello: I'm still looking for information on David JAMES who died in the 1869 Avondale Mine Disaster. According to the newspaper account of the accident, he left a wife and child (names not known to me or listed in the newspaper). Persons throughout the USA made contributions to an account for the widows and children. A committee was formed to distribute these funds. (1) I'm hoping to find a record of the persons (wives and children) who received monies from these charitable funds. (2) Also, I have been unable to learn where David JAMES is buried. 3. Hi Shawn,The Avondale Mine property was leased by MR.J.C.Phelps of Wilkes -Barre.June 13,1863,of WM. C. Reynolds Gaylord & others. InJan.1866,Mr. PHELPS assigned it to the STEUBEN COAL CO.,which was- subsequently merged with the NANTICOKE COAL & IRON CO.,who builted the destroyed works & leases from whom the d.l. & w. r.r.co.are. This is just a little part of the account I have on the distaster. If you would like a copy send your address in an e-mail & I will gladly send it to you. I have researched this for years. As my g.grandmother was on her way to AMERICA WITH MY GRANDMOTHER WHO at the time was about a year old.Until they got here this distaster had happened. 3. I was just wondering... I've called that number and requested a call back regarding information on burials at Washburn Street Cemetery. In the three times I have left a message, I have never had a call returned. Do they just not like me, or do they not return calls on a regular basis? Perhaps the newspapers will give some information about the coal company owners and about the men who died. Please don't worry about time or expense. 1. Re: [PA-LAC] Cathedral Cem. and The Tombstone Transcription Project
    2. I think the idea for tombstone transciption at Washburn and Cathedral Cemeteries is a great idea. I wish I were closer to lend a hand. I also agree with Anne, that unless the project is properly organized, it may be an inefficient effort. A plot map of each cemetery with sections being assigned to people might be a place to start. I know that several of our local Texas genealogical societies have undertaken such projects with great success, although many have not been put online, which is where the real help lies. Gayle Thorpe Baar Irving, Texas Researching: Backus, Baker, Bridge, Culver, Davies, Davis, Easton, Evans, Fairbanks, Fisher, Gay, Gibbons, Hall, Harris, Hughes, Hutton, Ignew, Jones, Ladburner, Lee, Mackie, Miller, Morrell, Payne, Pettebone, Read, Starkey, Stephens, Swetland, Thorpe, Tiffany, Whitaker, Williams, Woodruff

    1. [PA-LAC] Cathedral Cem. and The Tombstone Transcription Project
    2. What great creativity and interest in this. Before responding to messages, I wonder if Walt Sullivan would comment on whether our ideas are redundant. Walt, do you think the Transcription Project is where we should direct our energies? I forgot-that-I-knew-about-it until I revisited the project yesterday after posting my initial message to the group. Also, Walt, I did not succeed in copying the web address to this message. Could you include that in your response? I have always felt engaged in an inefficient effort while trudging cemeteries, so it's really nice to know of the interest. Feel like I'm sort of stumbling around here in some confusion. Help! Walt! Thanks to all, Anne

    1. [PA-LAC] Tombstone Transcription Project
    2. Jean McNamara
    3. A Tombstone Transcription Project is a great idea. The website for a bordering county, Wayne Co., has had an ongoing similar project for several months. It's a combined effort of people who have knowledge of names, dates & cemetery of their own ancestors as well as local people who have walked some of the cemeteries. Data is sent to the webmaster for input & it's indexed. So far there are over 6,000 names on the site. http://www.rootsweb.com/~pawayne/cemeteries.htm

    3. Iva, This is a most generous offer. John Harris died at Avondale. I would like to know the info and have a copy of the death certificate. I don't know his DOB or place (except Wales). In the havoc of the tragedy, there was probably little info, but sometimes the parents are mentioned. John Harris d: 9/6/1869 wife's name Mary. I believe they lived in Scranton. I'm not sure if the young family went to Avondale with him. At the time of his death, there were 4 children, Eliza, Jane, MaryAnn and Morgan. Mary Harris was pregnant at the time of the disaster and delivered Margaret Harris , Jan 1870. This would be a very great help to me. I would be happy to pay for your time and expenses. Thank you!
