    3. I'm looking for the parents of Elsie Holloway (wife of Eliphalet Stephens). I believe she was born in Dutchess Co, NY and that her parents were Quakers. Can any confirm this? Elsie and Eliphalet Stephens are my 6th Great Grandparents. I am also looking for info on Elizabeth Van Cleat, first wife of Eliphalet Lord Stephens, son of Eliphalet & Elsie. Thanks Kristen Frederick

    1. [PA-LAC] re: Cathedral Cem. records
    2. After reading Joe Bryer's message posted yesterday, it seems that what many of us want to have access to is being worked on already. Joe, from your message, it sounds as though the official project has to do with capturing data in the written records. What about the actual tombstones? You mention the GRSNP "file of pictures of tombstones." Is there some way these are being added to, to avoid duplication? I am wondering, if, in addition to PA-LAC listers helping with data entry (if they want to make a contribution to the Society's computer-indexing efforts) there is some systematic way to contribute to the file of pictures of tombstones from Cathedral Cem. in order to help complete the file for merging with the computerized data whenever that is available. There's lots of interest in other cemeteries, too. Could you clarify the photo part of what you described? I await information as the diocesan project proceeds. Certainly our willingness to do whatever we can to help genealogists access these invaluable records expresses intense interest as well as--I speak for myself--frustration at the difficulties. Both St. Mary's in Dunmore and Cathedral Cem. have had major wipeouts of old records. They're the two places where all my ancestors were buried from 1800's on. It seems important to salvage the material evidence--the tombstones--while they're still here, as well as preserve the fragile paper records. I am very pleased to know the records are being saved, and I have been amazed at the expressions of cooperation and interest from all the many listers who responded to the idea of changing what we've been up against--what Joe describes as "the last with the least." 1. [PA-LAC] Daughters of America - Scranton Times, 4 /1/1932
    2. Among some family things, I found an article in the Scranton Times - April 1, 1932 regarding the 17th annual banquet of the Daughters of America ( not to be confused with the Daughters of the American Revolution) at the Hotel Holland on May 31, 1932. According to the article, "about 100 attended representing councils from all parts of northeastern PA. The speaker declared that the Daughter of America is an organization wHich need not fear the future, having stood the test of the years." Attorney HAROLD SCRAGG spoke on "Loyalty". T.A GERBIG presented MRS. BEULAH FERREY who acted as toastmaster for the evening. The invocation was by MR. ELIZABETH WARNKE, member of the state auditing committee. MRS. TREVOR WILLIAMS was the accompanist. Solos were rendered by MISS JEANNE MADDEN AND HARRY MADDEN. SAMUEL BEVAN acted as song leader. Gifts were presented to MRS. EMMA GERBIG, MRS. JENNIE GARBETT of Nanticoke, MRS. GLADY HERMAN of Honesdale, MRS. MARY BROWN of East Stroudsburg, T. A. GERBIG, and MRS. ESTELLA JOHNSON of Minersville. Other honor guests present were: MRS. MAUDE TEETER of Hawley, MRS. LILLIAN PAFF, MRS. HATTIE BISHOP of Archbald, MRS MAME BROWN, and MRS. LIDA SNYDER of Waymart. The committee in charge of the affair were: MRS. BEULAH FERREY, MRS. EMMA KREILICK, MRS. GLADYS HERMAN, MRS. ELIZABETH WARNKE, MRS. LILLIAN PAFF, MRS. HATTIE BISHOP, MRS. EMMA GERBIG of Archbald AND MRS. PAULINE HINES. Diana Luellen, Elmira, NY

    1. [PA-LAC] more on my PA and NJ LANCE - DECKER family
    2. Dear Joe: Once again on the search for my people. >From an 1856 will I believe I have linked my Lance people to the Lantz line that arrived in Philadelphia Oct of 1738. Still there are some details to fill in. One such detail has to do with my 2 great grandfather WILLIAM LANCE (his father also spelled the name LANTS, and another researcher spelled the name LANTZ in his 1931 book). William was born in NJ circa 1820. I have also found who I believe to be his three brothers, his father and mother -- all buried in Hainesburg Cemetery just outside Walnut Valley, NJ. My problem is that in cannot find what happened to William or the grave of his wife Scharlet Brown. We find William and his family in the federal census of 1860. By the census of 1870 William is listed as a widower. So far no grave of his wife nor their marriage records or record of her death can be found. I know William's first child, my great grandfather ANTHONY LANCE married EMMA or Imogene DECKER. I know also that their first child, William B. Lance was born Oct. 1874 in Scranton. So we know that William and his children lived in NJ in 1870 and that Anthony had moved to Scranton by Oct of 1874. Anthony would have been just 22 in 1874. Though at the moment I have no record of William in PA, I can wonder; was he there with his son Anthony? So far I find no record of the marriage of Anthony and Emma in either NJ or PA. Likewise, as you know, there appears no record of Emma as a child. We did find the record of the divorce in Oct of 1897 but the paperwork of the divorce for those records appear missing. Anthony died in 1931 and is buried in Nicholson Cemetery. So far there is no will for him. His second wife, PERMELIA CAREY died in 1933 in Scranton. I know the funeral was conducted in Nicholson but I have found no will for her either. Any help gratefully appreciated. Laurence Lance Seattle

    3. Hi List I will be going to Scranton tomorrow morning. I hope to be in Olyphant tomorrow about 9am. Peter and I have a date of birth for his grandmother and we have found his great grandfather on the 1910 census and want to see if we can find him in the 1900 census index. Before heading home we want to go to St Adelberts PNC Cemetary in Dickson City. I hope I can find Bronislawa Dabulewicz and her husband John/Andrew_ I know several of you listers would like look ups at the cemetery. I will be glad to look specifically for you if I can get to the church office, but , when I called last week it sounded like that will be impossible. The Priest has been ill for several weeks and he has not been able to come to the phone. I have not received any answers to letters mailed to St Adelberts in January or June asking for information. If we can get to the cemetery I will write down as many markers as possible and will send them to this list next week :) I think this cemetery may be one to put on your list of things to record . 3. Hi Mary I'm still thinking about your find. Can you tell me anymore? I was wondering if there was anyone else in the grave? When the miners died so suddenly, were there only enough graves for them? If family mmembers died later would there have been room for them? John Harris (Harries) had a child, Margaret, who was born 4 months after his death. She appears on the 1870 Scranton Census, but not on the 1880 Census. My guess is that she died as a child. Do you think she was buried with the dad? His wife, Mary Harris remarried some 10 years later, I assume she is buried with her second husband, John Morgan. I have not found either of them yet. Mary, was there a birth date of year of birth on the marker? I don't know that either. Thanks alot for the info. BTY what else do you know about Aberdare, SW? 1. [PA-LAC] Cathedral cemetery Records
    2. GRSNP Prez
    3. Dear Pa-Lackaw lister; The Genealogical Research Society, since our inception, has been computer-indexing as many records as the custodians of the records would allow. Northeastern Pennsylvania cemeteries have been notorious for being the "last with the least." Despite the wish of many clergy to keep many records private; we've been given many cemetery records which we computer-index. Many of our members have walked the cemeteries where the idea of copying or indexing the records has not been well received--a few have used a digital camera to save time and effort. We have a large file of pictures of tombstones---which someday will be merged with the computerized data. I mention this because many on this list expressed a willingness to assist in a program to enter Cathaderal cemetery records into a database. The cathedral cemetery is already doing this. Their records will be made available to any serious family historian. The Bishop is to be commended for taking this action. It is now a moot point for any of us to duplicate what the Diocese is doing for us. There are many cemeteries whose record keeping is still in the "dark ages." Our policy is to concentrate on those facilities that have no immediate plans to computerize. If, however, any lister wishes to assist in entering data (cemetery, obit or marriages); GRSNP has the records, the program, the desire, and the mission to computer-index the name of every person who ever lived, wed, worked or died within a seven county area of northeast Pa. If you have the will and a PC; you can do this data entry in the comfort of your own home at your own pace. All data in GRSNP's computers is given freely to anyone/everyone without charge. We have done this on a daily basis for the past six years by phone, fax, e-mail, or in person for those who visit our Research center in Olyphant. I enjoy reading the many helpful hints our more knowledgeable members offer to those neophyte family historians on this list. You are to be congratulated for your willingness to share your gift, your time and your talent to advance this most enjoyable pastime of seeking our stalwart northeastern Pennsylvania ancestors. 2. bruthj209
    3. List: Another one of the solutions I got. I am just learning to cut and paste and left this one off what I wrote before. I think it is a pretty good solution -- getting a tech. -- you can get into a lot of problems when you open a computer case and don't know what you are doing. Clock problem...There is an internal battery, like a large watch battery(size of a quarter) which may be wearing out. While it is easy to change, you need to know which battery it is, and the cover need to be removed to gain access to the motherboard. A computor tech is probably best at changing due to problems with static electricity which can screw up things. a techie should be able to change it in 10-15 minutes at most. and the cost should not be exorbitant. A battery should last a year or two depending on usage Barbara

    3. Hi to Everyone, I haven't been around lately, and hope you all don't mind my butting in on the cemetery thing. I had offered awhile ago to transcribe Calvary cemetery if anyone had a list. For Joe Bryer ,or PALACKAW.If you should need Typists assistance let me know I would be glad to assist. Apparently My Great Grandfather was buried at Calvary or (Calvary) without a headstone or Was using another Name his whole life! My Great Aunt and father state Calvary is where James Meehan is buried. Should anyone stumble across him would you please let me know.(about 1900-1930) Living in Mayfield his whole life.I have no vitals so I cannot proceed.I would appreciate it. Have you all checked with the local DAR chapter ? In NY State in the 1930's the local DAR chapters did an inventory of each cemetery in their chapters area .Perhaps they did this in PA as well? Of course they were actually locating Revolutionary War Soldiers so they could honor these graves with the appropriate Marker. Perhaps local Veterans Organizations have a listing as well for Memorials? Fire Departments? Police Departments ? Masons ? As a side note for those of you interested in Architecture a wonderful web site is HABS/HAYER at the National Parks Service. HABS (Historic American Buildings Survey) This was a works Project to Survey Historic structures in the 1930's. This site has Photographs ,Renderings ,Floor plans and even some Geaneaology info tucked into the document related pages. Our web site currently has a link into this web site. You can spend hours at this site ! OURS www.fortklock.com For NY Mohawk valley Geaneaology ,primarily Palatine German families. Once in HABS /HAYER click on drawings or photographs, search for Luzerne ,PA and about 40 buildings are Illustrated and photographed . This would also be a great link from PALACKAW . Our county web-page is currently working on a link to this site as well . ww.cr.nps.gov/habshaer/habs/ It's worth the trip. Margaret ......... Back to the cemetery ! But, I have asked them 2 or 3 times if it would ever be possible to film them and I was told that it would never happen. 2. bruthj209
    3. Verna, You asked that I send suggestions to all that I received re my clock problems. Some of the responses are listed below: For instance, I do know that the Autoprotect program will affect the time on your computer clock. This program, because it is always watching and looking, can cause computer slowdowns at times, which will affect your clock. I know that others more knowledgable than I have told me that these computer clocks are known for keeping lousy time. I have the same deal as you, only it doesn't lose a full hour..... 1. What would cause my clock on the computer to change times for no reason at all? It seems to be just one hour difference but it has happened at least three times in the last few months. The battery on your BIOS may be running out. See a local 16-yr-old to get it replaced. It might just need a new battery I think it runs a large watch type batteries or if you go to computer store they will have them too #1 is most likely caused by the CMOS (or clock) battery on your motherboard dying. It's more an annoyance than anything else, unless it dies completely. It can be fairly complicated figuring out what to do about it (there are different types) unless you have your original documentation. Check out this link from the L.A. Times business section (http://www.latimes.com/business/columns/techqa/20010222/t000016035.html) for more information. Your computer automatically will adjust for Daylight time, usually it will tell it it is doing so on boot up however Hope this information helps you all. Barbara
