I'm not positive but wasn't St. Rose Cem. at the corner of Belmont & Cannon St. The last time I was in C'dale it seems to me that there was a playground on it now. BFF1865, Thanks so MUCH for the info. From now on I will not be satisfied by the index card. Here I go again, sending and waiting. Thanks again, Dot -----Original Message----- From: BFF1865@aol.com [mailto:BFF1865@aol.com] Sent: Sunday, July 08, 2001 1:07 PM To: PALACKAW-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [PA-LAC] Civil War Pension Records RE: Civil War Records I have filed for several relatives' military records, including WWII, Korea, and Vietnam veterans. I filed for an ancestor's Civil War Military and Pension Records over a year ago. The information I received was eighty-four pages long. The military files typically contain a soldier's enlistment papers, muster rolls, hospital reports if applicable, and assignment orders from the war itself. The postwar pension file usually includes: original and subsequent pension claims, doctors' reports on war-related medical conditions, affadavits from witnesses to the soldier's wounding or injury, information on the widow(s) and children, property estimates, death and marriage certificates, etc. All of this information was necessary for a soldier to collect a military pension from the government. My ancestor died in 1900, and his widow in 1940 (never emarried). Their daughter filed for a reimbursement on her father's pension in the 1930s, in order to cover medical costs for her ill mother. So, in my ancestor's case, his military and pension files contain a plethora of family information from 1864 through 1940. While providing, of course, a great deal on an ancestor's war service, there is even more on his postwar life, and that of his family and friends. The cards on ancestry.com are simply an index of pension claims. They provide basic information on the veteran, such as his wife/widow, age, unit, etc. Beware, however. With well over a million such cards transcribed in a relatively short period of time, there are a good number of typos. My ancestor's age was even typed incorrectly. If you are interested in ordering Civil War Pension Records, you must use NATF Form 85. For Military Records, you would use NATF Form 86. You can send for the forms through the National Archives website, at www.nara.gov. Please note that you cannot use Standard Form 180 to order Civil War records. That form is used for all World War I veterans through the present, and for some earlier records. For example, enlisted Navy records from 1886 onward, and all Marine Corps records from 1905 to the present require the Standard Form 180. This can seem complicated, but seems clearer when you realize military records are kept in several different locations. All Civil War (even Confederate) records are kept at the National Archives in Washington DC. Many post-Civil War records are held at the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis, MO. Some 20th Century records are held at other locations, as well. It does take time for military and pension records to be received, usually 4-6 months after you send out the forms, but in the end, it will all be worth it! ==== PALACKAW Mailing List ==== Search the Lackawanna pages: http://www.rootsweb.com/~palackaw/search.html To unsubscribe: http://www.rootsweb.com/~palackaw/index.html#MailingList
Can someone please look up Zawatsky family living in Wilkes Barre. Father's name is John. Also might be listed as Zawacki. They lived on Chestnut St. Thank you in advance Jack Sponaes
Rick, What kind of info was in the 12 pages? I have the one sheet from www.ancestry.com that tells where and when the widow filed. Does anyone know what the difference is between the packet I received for $14.75 (about 12 legal sized pages of very cool info!) and the "Full Pension Application File" which costs $37? I didn't understand the difference when I submitted the application, so I obviously chose the less expensive option. This is something that I would like to know myself. I have ggggrandparents who are said to have been buried in St. Rose's cemetery in Carbondale. I went up to Carbondale on a visit to Scranton several years ago and while I was there, I asked around, but no one was able to tell me where St. Rose's Cemetery was. I even called St. Rose's Catholic Church in Carbondale, but they were not very helpful either. I left Carbondale that year thinking that perhaps the information I had just wasn't accurate, or that St. Rose's Cemetery was so old that there was no one alive who ever heard of it. My ancestors who are said to be buried there go back further than 1900. They go back to 1850's to 1870's . I would love to hear more information on St. Rose's Cemetery in Carbondale if anyone out there has any. Thank You: Sincerely; Mike Cavanaugh, Buffalo, NY
I just returned from vacation and found that the last email I have from any list is July 3rd. I can't imagine that I was thrown off the list because I only had 112 emails. Did everyone go on vacation the same week, or have I been deleted from the list and missed all those great posts ?!? Rita (evonri@aol.com)
Several weeks ago, a note was posted by someone offering to do look ups for Welsh and English immigrations. Just at that time I lost my system and did not get the name or address of the offer. Is that still available, I will provide information? Thanks Jim at cactuspatch@charter.net
Thanks everyone for the response. I should have been more specific, it was the 1920 census that I was inquiring about. Thanks again to everyone. Sean ----- Original Message ----- From: Richard M. This morning I was back in St. Mary's Cemetery in South Side. My grandson is buried there, and I went to his grave. But I digress. I have noticed a lot of talk on this list about the name ROSAR. I came across a few graves of that family, and copied downthe information. Bear in mind that I am NOT related to the ROSARs, nor do I have any more information on them. Here goes. 1. The first grave was two names Jacob ROSAR 1833-1914 Mary ROSAR 1847-1934 2. The second grave had a large obelisk shaped stone with several small individual stones. On the main stone Max M. ROSAR 1856-1920 Mary, his wife 1858-1950 Emma born 11 December 1877 died 22 July 1896 Francis born 12 February 1890 died 13 January 1900 John born 11 July 1823 died 23 November 1901 Elizabeth WINTERHALT 1895-1918 Individual stones John ROSAR 1823-1901 Elizabeth, wife of Joseph WINTERHALT 1895-1918 Max M. 1856-1920 Mary, wife of Max. M. 1858-1950 E. ROSAR (probably Emma) 3. The last consisted of two large stones together with several small individual stones or those of a couple. It was hard to tell who went with which stone. It was probably a very large plot. Mary ROSAR BRIER 1879-1942 Jacob ROSAR 1845-1928 Father, Charles ROSAR 1871-1930 ROSAR (main stone) Jacob 1845-1928 Charles 1871-1930 Rose 1872-1957 Ruth ROSAR GALBRAITH 1904-1944 Edna ROSAR ELSTON 1901-1980 Frances M. ROSAR 1893-1974 Military stone Joseph ROSAR 1st Lt. QM Corps 8 November 1974 aged 51 years Father, Joseph G. ROSAR 1869-1942 Mary 1870-1956 Romayne ROSAR 18908-1967 Mother, Catherine ROSAR 1881-1958 Father, William P. ROSAR 1876-1953 Elizabeth ROSAR 1864-1928 Peter ROSAR 1835-1908 Mother, Charlotte E. ROSAR 1878-1938 Father, Peter J. ROSAR 1878-1953 Charles C. ROSAR 1866-1948 Clara ROSAR 1879-1965 Hope this helps someone. Again, I have NO more information on any of these families. My only connection with the cemetery is that my grandson is buried there. Tom Price
Hickory Grove Cemetery is just off Route 407 in Waverly. If you take that road going out of Waverly toward Carbondale/Route 81/etc. you will come to Miller Road about a mile or so outside of town. Turn right and the cemetery is just down the road on the right. It is listed on the Lackawanna County website, and I believe in the phone book. The records are in the hands of a Mr. Henry Belin. Tom
Walt, Did Margaret Kerrigan Burns remarry after the death of her husband in the Civil War? Congress passed the Remarried Widows Act of March 3, 1901. The remarried widow was required to furnish proof of the marriage to the Civil War casualty in order to claim a pension; I found a wealth of information about my great-great-Grandmother's first marriage in these files at the National Archives in Washington. I don't know if this is any help in your situation. Iva Hanlon
Because you didn't specify a year, you'll have to do the lookup yourself. Go to the Lackawana Co. page and find the map references. [Locations, Maps & Cemeteries]. There are two lists for the wards current and 1885 streets directory. Either should do it as this street is an old one. Then go to the 1870-1920 census index under Other Lackawanna PAGenWeb Pages to look up the ward and find the roll / district number for the year you wish to search. -----Original Message----- From: vibrolux <vibrolux@gateway.net> To: PALACKAW-L@rootsweb.com <PALACKAW-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Thursday, July 05, 2001 7:30 PM Subject: [PA-LAC] Enumeration District and Ward >Hello, >Can anyone tell me what the enumeration distict and ward that the 1600 block of Church Ave (Providence) would be considered? >Thanks >Sean Shields >Researching: SHIELDS-JOYCE-MCNULTY-HARRISON-BUTLER-MADDEN-GERRITY-COLE-FANNING-ANDRES-ALT MAN (All from Scranton and surronding areas) > > >==== PALACKAW Mailing List ==== >Have you seen the USGenWeb Pennsylvania Page? http://www.usgenweb.org/pa/ >To unsubscribe: http://www.rootsweb.com/~palackaw/index.html#MailingList >
