    3. All county records in PA were surveyed in the late 80's to early 90's (1992?) by the PA Historic & Museum Commission. That list is in the PA state archives, on the catalog / index shelf available to the public. Unfortunately it is a bit cryptic. There is no guide to assist in its intepretation. -----Original Message----- From: AnneTullar@aol.com <AnneTullar@aol.com> To: PALACKAW-L@rootsweb.com <PALACKAW-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Tuesday, July 10, 2001 12:14 AM Subject: Re: [PA-LAC] Votter registration >I've wondered about voting records, too, as well as miscellaneous records >such as business/professional licenses, nongovernmental organizations of >various kinds, lots of different kinds of things that citizens might have >registered for or been certified to do, etc. Does anybody know in detail >what all is held by the courthouse aside from the expected wills, deeds and >so on? > >I understand there is a survey of Lackawanna Co. records--unpublished, but on >microfilm--LDS or State Archives or Library: has anybody looked at this? >Anybody know about such stuff? > >The survey I refer to was done in the 1930's; a WPA project, I think. > >If this doesn't ring a bell, I will find the reference and give it to the >list. > >Thanks, Anne > > >==== PALACKAW Mailing List ==== >Have you visited some of the surrounding counties? http://www.rootsweb.com/~palackaw/#Surrounding_Counties >To unsubscribe: http://www.rootsweb.com/~palackaw/index.html#MailingList >

    2. I've wondered about voting records, too, as well as miscellaneous records such as business/professional licenses, nongovernmental organizations of various kinds, lots of different kinds of things that citizens might have registered for or been certified to do, etc. Does anybody know in detail what all is held by the courthouse aside from the expected wills, deeds and so on? I understand there is a survey of Lackawanna Co. records--unpublished, but on microfilm--LDS or State Archives or Library: has anybody looked at this? Anybody know about such stuff? The survey I refer to was done in the 1930's; a WPA project, I think. If this doesn't ring a bell, I will find the reference and give it to the list. Thanks, Anne

    3. My grandfather has never showed up in the SSDI. I've heard that I stll may be able to access SS records on him if he applied but his death was never recorded because they did not apply for benefits. One of the sources cited for finding his SS# is Voters Registration Records. Has anyone researched Voters Registration Records? I've never seen a source for them. Are they held by the county? Or the township? My grandfather would have been in Lackawanna (Scranton) or Luzerne (Wilkes-Barre). Are the records open to the public, or do we have to write to some governmental agency? Any help would be appreciated. Bill Healey

    2. Tom Yaccarino
    3. St. Rose cemetary is in tact and you can visit it. It is the oldest of 2 cemetaries in Carbondale. There is a caretaker but there are no real records of the plots. It took two of us about an hour and a half to look at every stone that could be seen. There are some around the edges which have been grown over the current caretaker is trying to reclaim the sections from the shrubs but he is old and he has no help. St Rose church does not have any records before the 60's I believe I was told. The caretaker has some entry books (very incomplete) and is trying to construct a map of the cemetary because of all the inquiries he gets from folks like us. Directions to St Rose cemetary: 81 to Rt 6 east go ten miles to Carbondale. At the first fork in the road veer right to Cottage. Cottage turns into Pike which will take you into downtown Carbondale. after Ciambrones turn right onto S. Main St. go to the top of the hill and turn left. 2. Rick, There is no way of knowing if there is additional information in the file or not unless you send for the whole file. One of my cousins sent for the packet on a mutual ancestor. She received a lot of information but not everything. I have the full packet and there were letters written home by the soldier that his mother used as evidence of his financial report. There was also a marriage record for the parents that I did not have. Another ancestor that I have the complete file on has hardly anything. There were only about 10 sheets total in the whole file. It's a gamble. Carol

    3. The current cemetery for St. Rose church in carbondale is called "Mother of Sorrows" and its a few miles outside of town at Finch Hill. I believe it was started sometime in the fifties. Before that St. Rose Cemetery (entrance on Pearl St.) was in use and probably still has a few burials these days. It is a large well kept cemetery and has some old headstones but I'm not sure how far it does go back. Before that there was a St. Rose cemetery on the corner of Belmont and Caanan Sts and that one no longer exists. To reach the St. Rose Cemetery that is in existence, if you approach Carbondale from the Scranton area taking Route 6 N, you will come into Carbondale and cross Main St. Take a right on to S. Main and immediately you are faced with a Y, S. Main is the left branch of the Y, take it up the hill passing 9th & 10th Ave. Brennan and Lunny Cts. S. Main ends at Pearl St. Take a left onto Pearl and proceed a few block up the hill. The entrance to the cemetery is on the left.
