    1. Re: : [PA-LAC] O'Hara
    2. Thanks for the great info. That Felix is probably my great great great grandfather or his son (my great great grandfather). Also, that Joseph Jordain is probably Joseph Jordan because it was spelled both ways. Thanks, again.

    1. Re: [PA-LAC] Moscow Villager look-up, please?
    2. baird
    3. Sorry, but the Villager is a weekly paper which grew out of The Shoppers Guide--this dates back only to the 1950s. However, if their families were long time Moscow area residents, they may have been mentioned in a regular feature that used to be carried in the Village called Drinkers Beech--It was a local history with a massive dose of Who begat who. Were they buried in Moscow, or were they from somewhere else--if so, try for an obituary in theier old home town paper. Phil & Donna wrote: > Hello, > I was wondering if anyone who has access to the newspaper, The Moscow > Villager, would do a look-up for me in their archives. In PA, teachers pay into social security, or they did for years up until I left teaching in PA in 1981. I just searched for and found at least four of my Scranton Grade school teachers in the SSDI. I believe failure to find a listing is due more to the family not reporting the death or to a mistake in typing in the name. I found in cases of the last surviving spouse whose children were grown, or deceased that the death was not reported. That doesn't 'mean they didn't have a social security card, merely that no one reported the death to SS. Gayle

    1. [PA-LAC] Re: Voter's registration
    2. bhealey
    3. It was a good discussion we had on voter's registration, and thanks to all. I had originally asked the question because I can't find my grandfather's SS#, and since he died in 1952 the chances were fairly good he might have had one. I had read that one source of SS# numbers was voter's registrations records. The discouraging news I got was that voter's registration records are held for 5 years, but some might be recorded on microfilm. That sounds like that snowball's chance.... 1952 was 49 years ago. I was reminded that there were voter's registration books in the Scranton Public Library, and they list residents by street. Yes, these are good books, I've used them. However, they do not correspond any residents to SS#. I guess my only chance to get my grandfather's SS application, if he made one, is to search the SS records. Trouble is, I have only the date of death, not birth of SS# info, so that is rather impossible since he's not in the SSDI. These records are not pubicly searchable, I assume. Thanks again to all who responded.

    2. Carol Frazier
    3. It may be worth while to check an old edition of the SSDI. I think some are on CD. Both of my grandfathers were listed in previous indexes, but are not listed now. I know that I put post-ems on both of them. Carol

    1. [PA-LAC] St. Mary's Church Vol #219, 223
    2. Hi Tom & Walt I noticed your query about St. Mary's Church Cemetery. If it is the same one, I too, have family members buried there. I am planning a trip to Dunmore & Carbondale to do research regarding my TEEVAN ancestry sometime in August. I called St. Mary's for information on my family and cemetery time. According to death certificates that I have I know of three who are definitely buried there: PATRICK (11/18/1911), ELIZABETH (3/22/1915) and MARY ANN (12/31/1932). Due to a fire sometime before 1924, they only have a record for MARY ANN. The lady in the office said that HARRY P. (1/14/1958), FRANCIS 5/16/1962 and MICHAEL (1952) are also there. There should be at least three others buried there: JAMES born 1835 in Ireland and died between 1910-1920, JAMES son born 1864 in Ireland and died between 1889-1900 and CONSTANTINE (son) born 1871 and died between 1880-1900 If anyone remembers seeing any of these names, I would appreciate hearing from you. Since there are no records, I will have to look at each grave in the old and new cemetery. Thank you Verna

    1. [PA-LAC] Moscow Villager look-up, please?
    2. Phil & Donna
    3. Hello, I was wondering if anyone who has access to the newspaper, The Moscow Villager, would do a look-up for me in their archives. The two individuals that I am searching for are my grandfather and great grandfather's obituaries. I searched the Scranton newspapers but there was no mention of them and since they both lived in the Moscow area at the times of their deaths, I'm hoping the local paper will have run an obituary for them. Their names are Oscar Lewis died: March 24, 1926 and John Green died: Nov. 23, 1918. It would be of great help to me to find their obituaries and I would appreciate any assistance that anyone can give me. Thank you!! Donna

    1. [PA-LAC] Voters Registration books at Scranton Library
    2. The Scranton Public Library has books listing the registered voters for some of the years of the early 20th century. I forget exactly what years. I THINK 1913-1917, 1920-1923. I think that's the year count. There may be more or less. There's some good info in them. It lists by address, not person, so you can get a better idea of who lived on what street along with whom. Call to find out. Heather

    1. [PA-LAC] Civil War Pension Info - Thanks!
    2. Rick Nicholson
    3. Hello everyone! Just wanted to say "Thanks!" to everyone who responded to me either personally or through these lists regarding the Civil War Pension packets. I hope everyone who had follow-up questions also had them answered - if not, feel free to drop me a note off-list. Sorry I can't thank everyone individually. In total, I got several dozen responses, and, best of all, an offer of a personal lookup at the National Archives this week! You guys (and gals!) are great! Keep the info flowing! Rick

    2. Hi Bill, I have called the Election Commission in Scranton twice, receiving the same answer each time: Voting records are kept for only 5 years. Chances your ancestor's voting record is not available unless the Lackawanna Cty. Historical Society has records. I haven't checked there. Mary L. Casey

Reese [mailto:richreese@fast.net] Sent: Tuesday, July 10, 2001 7:56 AM To: PALACKAW-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [PA-LAC] Votter registration All county records in PA were surveyed in the late 80's to early 90's (1992?) by the PA Historic & Museum Commission. That list is in the PA state archives, on the catalog / index shelf available to the public. Unfortunately it is a bit cryptic.
