    1. [PA-LAC] Pennsylvania Child Labor Laws
    2. My uncle was 13 and working in a railroad car shop in Scranton on January 1, 1920 (federal census) and I'm trying to determine if he was legally employed. A Washington, DC-based children's rights group told me that federal child labor laws weren't passed until 1938, but a book about Lackawanna County said "by 1920 legislation was enacted against the employment of under aged children. Previously, between 15-20,000 children under the age of 14 years worked long hours for the coal industry." Does this refer to Pennsylvania? Does anyone know what the law stated?

Selecting those John Burkes who would file between 1853 and 1877 narrows the search field to 8 hits. I'll look at the films and do my best to select the "right" John Burke. Hopefully one lived in Minooka. I'll get back to you with my findings. Wish us luck. Only 3 Michael J. Walsh in the naturalization database. One came through Canada. I'll check those films this week, also and get back to you. I'm sorry the database is not searchable on-line. We are inputting >4,000 new entries each week and lack the manpower to keep updating the data to make it mass searchable. Maybe some day... In the mean time we do not mind searching the master computer. It only takes seconds..many of the early transcribers butchered many of the surnames. Hope we have helped. Enjoy the search. Joe Bryer

Unfortunately, that is all the information I have on him (John the father.) His wife's name was Anna (or Hannah) Murphy and they were married by 1860. Were they married when they immigrated? 2. Mary--I think it's Holy Cross. This was in the rain, last stop on my way out of town. I was in a hurry and did not want to take time to get something to write with out of my car, but I think the memory is correct. I've never seen it anywhere else; it may have been one of those things that people ignored because there was a convenient usage in place. Anne

    2. Hi Anne, I didn't know of a previous name of Holy Name. I've looked at a lot of death records and don't recall it, or possibly I dismissed it not seeing a connection. Anyway, it's not on any of my ancestors records. Thank you for informing me. Mary

    1. Re: [PA-LAC] Burr/Carbondale Pocketwatch on eBay
    2. It is possible to use a shotgun approach in guestimating an item's value. Certainly such approaches were common in a more innocent time. But in today's litigious society such an attempt is fraught with problems. Not the least of which is a malpractice suit for not using due diligence. As an expert witness I would be very shy of attempting to establish any value of any item without a detailed quantitative and qualitative analysis. An example of a shotgun approach, based on market knowledge, would be that we know most pocket watches, made of base metal and not of antique age would sell in the $100 to $200 range. A problem occurs should anyone ask how we know about a particular watch without specific knowledge. The answer is of course, it is impossible to know or even guess the fair market, or any other value of any item without specific information. Apart from condition, it is necessary to know the manufacture, size and quality and type of movement, materials used in the case i.e.: gold - plated, rolled gold or homogeneous, silver, or basemetal, if the case has a cover (known as a "hunter's" case"), the type of dial, and a case and movement number which confirms approximate place, date and identity of manufacture.

    2. Thanks, Mary, for your response. At one time, it may also have been called--or named, whether or not the usage became common--Holy Cross Cemetery, though I have never seen that on a DC. That name is on plaque or something at the cemetery. Anne
