I am searching for an Abraham Johnson Mar. ????? Singer, Their daughter Edith married Charles W.Johnson,of Waverly and they had one son Charles C. Johnson born 1905. This is the only date I have. I am researching this family for my 96 year old stepfather in Alabama. He was born and raised in Pa. (Wavely) his parents both died young and he was virtually on his own, then he went to college GWU in washington DC and moved to live in Ala. He is very interested in anything I can find out. His parents Charles W.Johnson and Edith Wilson Johnson are buried in Clark Green Cemetery, does anyone have this cemetery info. any info will be greatly apprecicated. C.J. Williams
Joan, Check the records of the St. Casimir's Church in Lyndwood. The "old" St. Casimir's church in Larksville was torn down due to the ground sinking from the mines and moved across the river to Lynwood. The secretary of the new St. Casimir's in Lyndwood is wonderful and will be glad to look up old church records for you. They go back at least the 1890's when the church was founded by the Rev. Alex Burba. They have burial, baptism, and marriage records. Perhaps someone from Wilkes-Barre could look up the address or phone number for you. I have mislaid mine and will continue to look for you unless you get it from another list member. Diana in Elmira, NY
A friend sent this to me: The Story Tellers..... We are the chosen. My feelings are in each family there is one who seems called to find the ancestors. To put flesh on their bones and make them live again, to tell the family story and to feel that somehow they know and approve. To me, doing genealogy is not a cold gathering of facts but, instead, breathing life into all who have gone before. We are the story tellers of the tribe. All tribes have one. We have been called as it were by our genes. Those who have gone before cry out to us: Tell our story. So, we do. In finding them, we somehow find ourselves. How many graves have I stood before now and cried? I have lost count. How many times have I told the ancestors you have a wonderful family you would be proud of us? How many times have I walked up to a grave and felt somehow there was love there for me? I cannot say. It goes beyond just documenting facts. It goes to who am I and why do I do the things I do? It goes to seeing a cemetery about to be lost forever to weeds and indifference and saying I can't let this happen. The bones here are bones of my bone and flesh of my flesh. It goes to doing something about it. It goes to pride in what our ancestors were able to accomplish. How they contributed to what we are today. It goes to respecting their hardships and losses, their never giving in or giving up, their resoluteness to go on and build a life for their family. It goes to deep pride that they fought to make and keep us a Nation. It goes to a deep and immense understanding that they were doing it for us. That we might be born who we are. That we might remember them. So we do. With love and caring and scribing each fact of their existence, because we are them and they are us. So, as a scribe called, I tell the story of my family. It is up to that one called in the next generation to answer the call and take their place in the long line of family storytellers. That, is why I do my family genealogy, and that is what calls those young and old to step up and put flesh on the bones. (Unknown Author)
Dear Iva Thank you so much for the reply. In the midst of all these emails, I had not saved your address. I recevied your mail re: Avondale. This was wonderful, I cannot thank you enough for all the work. If you have anything large to send here is my address for snail mail. Shawn Presner 355 Waverly Rd Southampton, PA 18966 Please let me pay you anything you incurred for me. I would like to try and get to W-B to look at the Luzerne Courthouse for John Harris' death cert. I hope that in the wake of the tragedy, they still kept the records. I was hoping that his parents may have been listed. I also have been subscribing to the Glamorgan list. Until I know his parents names, I cannot make a match. Iva, Mary Harris his widow remarried in Scranton about 1879 to a John Morgan. I have looked at the marriage records in Lack Co, but no go. The records for Lack Co start at 1885, but the county was formed from Luzerne in 1878. Where can I find those missing years? Mary and John Harris als had a child after his death. Margaret Harris was born in Scranton Jan 1870. I may be able to get the birth cert from Luzerne. Any suggestions?? and Thanks again! Hi Lenora When I started my research. I was told you should have at least 3 pieces of proof. I enter all information into my database with/without sources. It is a way of keeping track of what information you have. Hope this helps. I am wondering how much proof I should have to connect a person to my database. I I have a baptism of a Carl George Grieswald born on Nov. 7, 1859 in Germantown, WI with parents Algernon and Maria Dibray(sic) Grieswald as parents. My Dippre family returned to Scranton, PA probably around 1870 along with my Rosar family. they settled first in Scranton and then went to WIS in 1850 and then some went back to Scranton. in 1880 census in Scranton I find Mary Griswold a widow long with 7 children all born in WIS from 1860-1876. The oldest child is George Griswold age 20 and there also is an Algernon as a child. In 1900 census I find George Griswold born NOV 1859 in WIS with his wife and children. I am 99.9% sure this George Griswold is the one I have the baptism for and the one in the 1880 census. Is this enough proof to add them to my family. P. S. in 1880 they are living next to the Rosar and Dippre families. Lenora from Wisconsin
I don't know who Tom Price is but would appreciate it if someone would give me his e-mail addres regarding the Griswold family Lenora from Wisconsin
I would be glad to hear from anyone who thinks they may be connected to Dr. Flynn. I have a good deal information on the Dr. and his descendants and a ton of info on the Calpin family. Judging by the address that Rich gave for Guernsey Hall, I would have to say it no longer exists. The address puts it on N. Washington Avenue close to the corner of Linden Street. I don't remember anything like that in that block of North Washington Avenue. I resided in the city from 1950 until 1981 and attended Central High School, which was just a few blocks from there at the corner of N. Washington and Vine Street. To interested Flynn researchers: this is from Jubilee History Commemorative of the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Creation of Lackawanna County Pennsylvania, etc., by Thomas Murphy, Historical Publishing Company,Topeka--Indianapolis, 1928, pp.991-992. To Mr. and Mrs. Flynn the following children were born: Irene, lives at home; Robert J., the subject of this sketch; Walter, lives at home; Mary and Margaret, both teachers, live at home. The early education of Robert J. Flynn was reeceived in the public schools of Scranton. He then took up the study of medicine and in 1916 was graduated from Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia. He served his interneship at Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre, and the Moses Taylor Hospital, Scranton, and in October,1917, volunteered for service in the World War. He enlisted in the Medical Corps and was soon promoted to captain and sent to France, where he was attached to the British Expeditionary Forces. He was discharged at Camp Dix, N. J., June 5, 1919. Upon his return to Scranton, Doctor Flynn established offices at 551 Fourth Avenue, where he carries on a large practice. Hi Mr. Resse Thank you so much for publishing articles from the Scranton Times. It's most enjoyable reading. Maybe, I'll find my TEEVAN ancestors from Dunmore and my Taylor/Dickinson from Carbondale mentioned along the way. Keep up the good work. Verna
I suggest anyone who wants to learn more about the breaker boys, and other aspects of the daily life of coal miners, visit the Eckley Miner's Village, near Hazleton. It will break your heart.
