    1. [PA-LAC] other catholic churches
    2. I just had to tell everyone that some catholic churches are very cooperative. I put out a query on a Missouri board and got a response from someone working in a parish in Missouri. She looked up a few things and then asked me for more dates, names, etc. and today in the mail I received 5 baptism and one marriage record. She also typed up a translation for each one and said there was no charge. I know that some parishes are busier than others, but I was really surprised and pleased and will send a "donation" to her. So there is some hope with smaller towns, etc. Lenora from Wisconsin

Marge - one of my best buddies just happened to ask me today if I could locate the township where her grandmother was born (they're in need of her birth cert) -- her name is Myrtle Mildred Fitch, married a Cornell. They both died in the flu epidemic, and left a little girl Betsy that was raised by my grandparents, John and Clara Dietrich. They lived in S. Scranton, but may have moved to NYC. Any connection? I don't know anything else about the Engel side, and my cousin Betsy died, and I can't find her son or daughter. Betsy married Francis Kloss. Ruth

    1. [PA-LAC] St. mary's Cemetery
    2. FYI, there is an alternate way into St. Mary's Cemetery in South Side. There is a sign there, but it is easy to miss. If you drive back South Webster Ave. (formerly Stone Ave. for you who are familiar with the Census ) and turn left on Palm St. you can follow the signs and drive right into the cemetery. Not the best road, but it beats hopping the barrier. Tom

    3. A member of the list found my stepfathers (who is 96 in Aug.) grandfather Abraham Wilson. I want to thank you again and appreciate your help. Does anyone know of a Charles William Johnson married Edith Wilson, about 1900 or so. Mystepfather was born in 1905 so it should be early 1900's for the marriage. Also , Charles William Johnson lost Edith early on and remarried ????? He then died between 1910 and 1917. I can't be more specific because my stepfather (again he is 96 ) does not remember. He certainly enjoyed hearing about his grandfather. This list is a wonderful list to belong too, I am a member of several and this by far is the most interesting. C.J. Williams

    3. DO NOT make these kinds of assumptions, the cost varies considerably from county to county, as does the content of many early applications and records. If you are looking in Lackawanna Co. between 1886 and 1905, you will get parents name's - their first names, sometimes first and last, but rarely the mother's maiden name., and usually a birthdate, sort of. That is, you will get the age of the contracting parties at their last birthday, and if they were under 22, the date of their last birthday. From 1905 - 1913, no bithdates, just age, and no parents names at all. If you expect to get the same info in (for example) Carbon or Luzerne Co. for that time period, forget it. Age and birthdates, yes; parents' names not at all. Sometimes the cost of photocopies vary widely; usually is a quarter, but it can run as high as $1. To give you the correct answer, the last time I checked it was $5 for a mail request to the Clerk of Marriage Licenses at the Lackawanna county courthouse. -----Original Message----- From: Connie <waffles@bwkip.com> To: PALACKAW-L@rootsweb.com <PALACKAW-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Sunday, August 05, 2001 2:00 PM Subject: Re: [PA-LAC] Marriage Certificate Request >There is more info on a marriage application than on the certificate. 1. [PA-LAC] Dickson Manufacturing Company
    2. Recently there were some questions and comments about the Dickson Manufacturing Company on the list. I've deleted my old emails, but I finally dug out my copy of THE CITY OF SCRANTON, PA AND VICINITY AND THEIR RESOURCES, published by the Scranton Tribune sometime in the late nineteenth century. It lists James P. Dickson, born in Carbondale July 24, 1852, as the President of the company. The company made train locomotives. James was married to a Laura H. Reynolds, daughter of J. Fuller Reynolds of Wilkes Barre. Gayle

    1. [PA-LAC] Re: PALACKAW-D Digest V01 #253
    2. I just wanted to pass on a rather unsettling experience that my wife and I went through this past Thursday. You know all those adds that pop up on our ISP, some of which have to do with tracing your family tree. On a whim the other day, my wife checked one out and typed in the name of her great grandfather. It came up with 2 hits. At this point let me backtrack. Last summer, at a family reunion, her cousin's 14-year-old came up to her and told her that he was really interested in the family history. She sent him a ton of information (which was never acknowledged, thank you very much) and it was forgotten--until the other day. It seems that the little so-and-so gave/sold the information to a paid website as his own. All this information that she spent countless hours on, not to mention $$$ paid to a German genealogist is now on the web. Perhaps it will benefit someone, but to me it is downright thievery and plagiarism. I only write this as a caution to others. Will we still give out our information? Yes, but we will both be (and I caution others to be) very leery about it. Tom Price

Perhaps it will help someone. Tom

    2. Lenora asked about St. Mary's Church. There is also St. Mary's of Mt. Carmel on Chestnut St in Dunmore that is still operating. I have several relatives buried there. Ruth wondered if my ggrandfather Eli Dickinson who was a boiler maker also made stoves and I really do not know. I have very little info on him. So far, all I have is information I obtained from the Carbondale 1900, 1910 & 1920 census. Recently, I found out the year of his death, and will be sending for his death certificate. Verna
