    1. [PA-LAC] Death and Burial Questions
    2. Garthe L. Benjamin
    3. Hello All, I would like to know if anyone can help me find a grave. It is for Michael D. Benjamin who died September 5, 1863. In the text I have of our family history it says he was buried at Providence and the service was performed by Rev. Mr. Blakesley. Rev. Blakesley was Pastor of the Providence Methodist Episcopal church in 1863. Does anyone know where persons that were members of this congregation would have been buried? Garthe Benjamin in NJ

    2. Peggy Sorry my William J. Burke was the son of John Burke & Anna Judge Burke. He was born @ 1858. His wife was Margaret McDonnell Burke and they had 8 children: Annie, Thomas, John, William, Edmond, Sarah (*my grandmother), Margaret & Genevieve. He was a miner, mine inspector & postmaster in Minooka. He died in 1910 inspecting a mine when the roof collapsed. Thanks for thinking of me. 1. [PA-LAC] Re: What's a Burgess?
    2. Actually, Boroughs do have Mayors. They are elected by the general population of voters and serve as moderator for the Borough Council and cast deciding votes, when necessary. In our borough, the Mayor also serves as the head of the Police Department, is a part-time Borough employee paid a certain stipend for attending monthly Council meetings. We also have a Borough Manager who takes care of the day to day business of running the borough. Most other boroughs in this area are run in a similar fashion. See the definition of 'burgess' below. CJ AOL's dictionary gives the following definition: bur*gess (noun) (Middle English burgeis, from Old French borjois, from borc) First appeared 13th Century 1 a: a citizen of a British borough b: a representative of a borough, corporate town, or university in the British Parliament. 2 : a representative in the popular branch of the legislature of colonial Maryland and Virginia.

    3. Patty, I know we wrote before but this seems too much of a coincidence. I have a William J Burke (b. about 1850) in my line who was married to either Cecilia or Ella (could be a nickname). He was the first burgess of Winton when it was incorporated in 1877. In later years he was a Lackawanna County Commissioner. The name of his children were: Agnes, Francis, Minnie, Edmund, William and Alexander. Do you think there is a connection? My sources said that he lived on Madison Ave in Scranton. His parent's names were Peter and Bridget Burke. 3. I'm interested in the HAUTMAN name. My family is actually HARTMAN(N) from GER. In the 1850 Census Mount Pleasant, Wayne Co., PA there is a John HAUTMAN age 30 b GER, wife Barbary age 30 b Ger, children - Barbary 5 b NY, Mary 2 b PA, and Casimer 9 b Ger. I guess by coincidence my line of Hartman is by Casimir who emigrated to US in 1851 at age 9. I thought this 'U' was perhaps a mistake in the handwriting of the census taker, but sadly (for me) it must be correct. Casimer had a bro. Johann so it all fit! 2. Richard M. Reese
    3. Technically yes, as the Burgess is usually appointed / selected from within the council, which is elected by the voters; whereas a Mayor is directly elected by the voters of a city. In order to be a councilman, you must reside in the ward or district which you represent. I do suppose that it is, and was, possible for the council to appoint someone not already seated on council as Burgess. That's a lot more detail than neccesary to convey the concept of the office to a person unfamiliar with the term. -----Original Message----- From: SGowen4089@aol.com <SGowen4089@aol.com> To: PALACKAW-L@rootsweb.com <PALACKAW-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Sunday, August 12, 2001 1:10 PM Subject: Re: [PA-LAC] Re: What's a Burgess >I believe that a burgess is a resident of a borough who is a voter and who >becomes an elected representative of that borough. > > >==== PALACKAW Mailing List ==== >Search the Lackawanna pages: http://www.rootsweb.com/~palackaw/search.html >To unsubscribe: http://www.rootsweb.com/~palackaw/index.html#MailingList >

    2. Hello List: I want to share all the information that many of you have shared with me on the: Eidy "Eddy" Creek Colliery It has been referred to as both the "Eidy" and "Eddy" Creek Colliery. It was located off South Valley Avenue near the Throop town line in the Smoketown area of Olyphant Township, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania. It has not been in operation for the past 50 or so years. It was owned by the Delaware and Hudson Coal Company. The 1909 Report of the Department of Mines - Anthracite for the Second Anthracite District lists the Olyphant, Legitts Creek, Eddy Creek and Marvine collieries. Hope this helps. If anyone has any additions or corrections, please let us know. In Christ I Am, Ron Powell Nunda Livingston County New York

    2. Richard M. Reese
    3. Burgess is the "official" title for the lead administrator of a borough, which is the form of government used by the "towns" in Pennsylvania. Actually there is only one town in PA, all the rest of what most people consider a town, are really boroughs. It would be equivalent to a "Mayor" of a city. -----Original Message----- From: PFinnis@aol.com <PFinnis@aol.com> Date: Sunday, August 12, 2001 9:20 AM Subject: [PA-LAC] Re: Position question/BURKE >In searching the rootseb/lackawanna archinves for my family, I came up the >following... >1877 - William J.
