A year later their third child Annie was born, she was the first child of theirs to be born in this country. Edward and Bridget's daughter * Annie married John Francis McGeever. > > Annie was born April 1 1872, in Plymouth, PA. She married John > McGeever on Christmas day 1891. Annie died on September 21, 1913. At the age of 41. > > John Francis McGeever was born on April 15 1867, in Mt. Charles- County > Donegal Ireland. Edward Gallagher married Bridget Gallagher in Scotland 1865. They had their first two children while in > Scotland. Mary who was born in 1866, and Patrick who was born in 1868. Shortly after Patrick's birth they returned to Donegal where they remained for two years. In 1870 they left Ireland and came to this country, they first settled in Plainsville, Pa. In 1872 they had their third child Annie who was their first to born in the USA, then James born in 1874, Francis born in 1877 and Catherine born in 1879. By the 1880 census they had moved to Chestnut Street in Wilkes Barre. The move to Chestnut Street was some time between 1870 and 1880. The 1890 census for most of the United States was destroyed in a fire in Washington D.C. By the 1900 census Bridget had passed away in 1899, and Catherine was no longer on the census, which means she had also passed away. On the 1900 census there was also three other children born in the 1880's. They were Edward born in 1882, Katherine born in 1884, and Cornelius born in 1887. Now we have come to the story of these children. Cornelius died about four years after his Mother, in 1903, he was 17. Edward remarried a woman named Ellen Higgins after Bridget's death, they had no children together. Aunt Kate was five when Bridget died. So she knew what is was like to not be raised by her mother. And I'm sure could relate to the McGeever children when Annie died. She stepped in and took Gert and her and Uncle Mark raised her as their own. Now I will try to tell the story of each child as I know it. 1) Mary - their oldest child married Charles McGroarty, they had four sons. 1) Michael who married Ann Wray. 2) Edward who married Catherine Byron. 3) Charles who wife's name I don't have. 4) John who married Nancy O'Connor. Mary and Charles owned a farm up in New Albany Pennsylvania. The McGeever children spent a lot of time at their Aunt and Uncles farm growing up. I remember my mother talking about the farm. And George told us about Aunt Sue talking about the farm, and his memories of the farm. 2) Patrick - who was called Uncle PJ. He married Maggie Pryor, they had no children of their own and both married late in life. They raised a girl named Dorothy Gray who was the child of Maggie's niece Florence (Boland) Gray. They at one time lived in the down stairs of a house in Wilkes Barre on N. Washington street. In this house also lived Charles and Kathleen (McGeever) Elliott. PJ was a professional waiter and travel to high class resorts in upstate New York. His nephew Harold Gallagher remembers visiting his Aunt Maggie but seldom saw uncle PJ he was usually traveling. George Nelson remembers them living across the street from Grandpa and Aunt Mame and Uncle Tom's home on N. Franklin Street in Wilkes Barre. 3) Annie - who married John Mc Geever and they had 14 children 1) Mame who married Tom Larkin 2) Kathleen who married Charles Elliott. 3) Susan who married George Nelson 4) Rose who married Floyd Bouton 5) John who married Elizabeth Reid 6) Jim who married Anasticia Carden 7) Margaret who married Richard Gucker 8) Agnes who married Joseph Brennan 9) Anna who married Francis Gallagher 10) Grace who married William Moclair 11) Gertrude who married Dennis Mahoney 12) Edward who died young 13)Theresa who died young and 14) was a stillborn baby. 4) James- who was called Jim the fiddler he was the one who wrote poetry. He first married Mary Loftus they had one son Edward who married Mae O'Brien. They also raised a girl Marie Lockrey who might have been a relative who was orphaned. They first lived in Leadville Colorado. Then later lived in Butte Montana near his first cousin Frank Gallagher. Frank was Edwards brother James' son. After Mary's death sometime in the 1930's Jim married John McGeever's sister Susan (McGeever) Cannon, who was a widow. Those were the letters my Mother used to get from Aunt Susie in Butte, Montana. 5) Francis Gallagher - who married Maggie. They had no children of their own. They raised a boy named Emmett they adopted from a home. They also owned a farm in New Albany just a few miles from the McGroarty farm. Jim was a talented blacksmith. And taught this trade to his brothers and many nephews. I am told Frank was a tall thin scraggly, gruff looking man. He drove into the town with a mule and buckboard. 6) Edward - whose wife I have no name for. He owned a farm at one time in New Albany. He was a blacksmith. At some point he moved to Baltimore Maryland. He and his wife had four son's. 1) James known as big Jim he lived in Florida. 2) Charles - who was know as Chick, he married Ann Eijerman and they always lived in Baltimore. 3) Elijah lived in Tennessee married a girl named Doris from Wilkes Barre. 4) Edward - who was a Washington DC police officer, who lived in Silver Spring Maryland. 7) Katherine - who married Mark Monroe, they had 3 sons. 1) Thomas who married Mary Peltier 2) Edward who married Louise 3) Mark who married Edie. Aunt Kate and Uncle Mark lived in Queens and raised their 3 boys and Aunt Gert there. There are stories about many of the nieces and nephews visiting the Monroe home. 8) Catherine and 9) Cornelius - never lived to grow up and get married. _______________________________________________________ http://inbox.excite.com

    3. Patti, Just because your motherboard was fried does not mean that the hard drive was also. The hard drive is where your files are stored. It's possible that if its still intact it can be taken out of your old computer and put in one that works and all of your files retrieved. This is not a difficult task for someone used to dealing with computers. It certainly would be worth checking on. I'm not sure when they moved in, but they moved to Taylor back in the early '70s (if my memory serves me). When I was a kid growing up, we lived in Clarks Summit, but I would spend some weekends with my Aunt and Uncle. I made some great finds thanks to Debbie's help. Of course now I have to start from scratch since my motherboard died like Linda's and I will be inputting my over 600 names & info into a new PAF or FTM. Which is better??? Any suggestions??? 1. [PA-LAC] Postmaster and Info Request
    2. As someone noted, postmasters are political appointees. I grew up in a town of 800 people. Theresa was postmaster when the Republicans were in the White House, Ed when the Democrats were in. As administrations changed, they took turns being in charge and being the subordinate, but none of us noted the difference. A very peripheral genealogy question - what is the average date of the first frost in Scranton, PA? My Mom, who lives in western Massachusetts, is considering having someone plant geraniums at her family's cemetery plot in Scranton, but is wondering if it's too late. I live in Maryland, so I can't advise her. I've tried various weather web sites and the UPenn Plant Clinic site, but can't find the date.

    1. Re: [PA-LAC] 1920 census
    2. Yes I remember very well who you are and still can't believe the information you found for me. As far as your visit to Scranton is concerned, one of the people you mentioned in your last e-mail was John Mach who was to be the guardian for the Sponaes children. Actually my grandmother was alive until 1933 and was able to take care of her children. If you can find out anything about him that would be of interest. He was born in 1886 and died in 1966 in Scranton. He came to this country around 1909. He had been married several times. The other spelling might be Macha. As far as John Zawatsky, like I mentioned before, I can't seem to be able to have Vital Records find his death certificate. I don't know how much more information I can give them than what I did already. As always, any help is greatly appreciated. Jack Sponaes
