Hi, My GILMARTIN/KILMARTIN and JUDGE relatives left Ireland (don't know where) about 1850+ and immigrated to Hartlepool, County Durham, England. They stayed there until 1863, when they immigrated to Scranton. Hartlepool is in the northeastern part of England. My ggrandfather was a Puddler, and apparently there was work there for that profession. There is a website, DUR-NBL-L@rootsweb.com that can help in your research. It's frustrating though because the records I've found do not state where in Ireland my relatives were from. Hope this helps. Mary L. Casey
This may be a little off topic, but I was wondering if the below is common practice when gravesites are located. It seems to me, that this might go against the deceased's wishes. If the deceased had wanted to be cremated, the cremation would have been done in the first place. (Secaucus-AP) -- Turnpike officials plan to relocate as many as 900 graves that stand in the way of a Secaucus interchange project. Highway officials say the five-acre burial ground should not delay construction, which is scheduled to be finished in 2004. The turnpike plans to cremate the remains and relocate the remains in another cemetery. Any thoughts? Thanks. Take care, Jamie O'Brien
Unfortunately it happens--and sometimes the move results in a mass grave. My Great-grandfather came to the US via Liverpool, England. He was born in Liverpool of Irish parents, who then died when he was quite young. When he was an adult, but still very young, he came to Pennsylvania, through the port of Philadelphia, and eventually worked his way northwest to Scranton. I believe that Liverpool was the embarkation point for many, many Irish who came to this country. Iva
Shawn, You mention "Gla?" in your response. This is, more than likely, Glamorgan, Wales. Glamorgan includes Penarth (and Cardiff). My great grandparents, Evan and Mary Thomas, came from there sometime prior to 1890. It's been a while since I did the Welsh research - if you're interested, contact me privately. My own Irish ancestors went from Ireland to Manchester and Sheffield and Yorkshire in England. Later, they came to the United States. Also, remember that Liverpool was very popular with the Irish. It is no coincidence that the Beatles had an Irish connection with Lennon and McCartney. Liverpool was extremely popular. I believe in the late 1800s the city was predominantly Irish.
Donna During the period you mention the most likely as already mentioned were Liverpool and Southhampton. However, a note of caution, during the period of Ellis Island they are more likely to arrive in NY prior to that then it could be either NY or Philadelphia. My family emigrated during the period you mention from both Liverpool and Southampton arriving in NY. Dear Listers: Searching for info on Harry Jopko and his wife Gregoria Fil. they were married about July 1904 (where unknown) but their son(my father) was born in Scranton in 1906. Many Thanks, anton
Does anyone have an idea where in England many of the Irish originated from as a waypoint to leave England and end up to US and then on to Kingston PA. My relatives for some reason stayed in Ireland for at least four years and then on to U.S. but I would love to figure out where in England they came from and then try to connect to a source in Ireland? thanks for any suggestions on the England connection for the Irish in 1870's.
Hello List I want to thank everyone for all the information regarding ship travel from Wales to Pennsylvania. This is a great place with a lot of very nice people. Donna from CT Searching PRICE, WORRELL, BROWN, and MIDDLETON
I really don't think that this kind of action is necessary since the people who "volunteer" their time to even catalogue and enter this genealogical data in the computer system at the GRSNP are not PAID volunteers. I'd suggest to those of you having trouble with receiving records you may have already paid for to call them during their hours of operation to be able to speak with someone that is there. You can find the hours that they are open on their web site at www.cfrobbins.com/grsnp Joe has been a tremendous help to me and being the sole researcher there that is full time, it is hard to keep up with the tremendous influx of requests, paid or not. When my wife and I were there a few months ago they had just purchased a new shelving system to organize all the many many research materials they have in house. At the time, Joe was the only one cleaning the "back room". It was a mess and some of you may know, Joe is retired and does not get around like he used to in his earlier days. I will be in Scranton this week and plan to stop by and see Joe. I will mention your concerns and anyone with paid requests that are waiting on info please e-mail me at garthe@pics.com with the specific details of your requests and I will take them to Joe. ONLY E-MAIL ME IF YOU HAVE ALREADY PUT IN A REQUEST AND PAID FOR IT> THIS IS NOT FOR NEW REQUESTS PLEASE. Remember, patience is a beautiful thing! :-) Garthe Benjamin in NJ ----- Original Message ----- From: <MathTchr96@aol.com> To: <PALACKAW-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 27, 2001 6:08 PM Subject: [PA-LAC] No response on research! > To anyone who is having trouble with money that they paid for research: I > suggest that you contact the Better Business Bureau. Hi Fellow Listers: Today I received my ggrandmother's (Sara Dickinson) death certificate. She died on 8/29/1913 at 37 Canaan St. in Carbondale. She was buried on 9/1/1913 in Baltimore, MD. I would like to know what cemetery she is buried in. It's hard to read, but the name of the undertaker looks like it might be a C.C. Stridler in Carbondale. Would it be possible that the funeral home would still be in existence taken over by family members? Is there another funeral home that looks similar to this spelling? I would appreciate any suggestions to locate the funeral records of my gggrandmother, so I may know of her final resting place in Baltimore, MD. Thank you Verna
For the record, I asked for and received the results of a search in less than 2 weeks. This was early August. Greetings, A few years ago, I was searching for information on my SOULSBY family. The Genealogical RESEARCH Society of NE PA, http://www.cfrobbins.com/grsnp/ has a complete listing of naturalizations. I contacted them and spoke to a secretary that gave me the information needed, roll numbers and such, then I went to the courthouse, and asked to view the roll. I found my ancestor and the cost was 25 cents to make a copy of the naturalization record. Hope this helps.
