    1. [PA-LAC] Polish address
    2. The first one of your address is the name of a village. Wies is village in Polish. I have found four villages of the same name in Poland. Two are in Torun province, one in Lomza, and one in the Carpathanian mountains. None of them are close to Lublin, which is the last part of the address. Powiat is county in Polish. Gmina is circle or administration. The name of a post office is missing in the address.

    1. Re: [PA-LAC] Irish to US via England??? -- 1881 Census
    2. Alaine Keisling
    3. In the 1881 British census there were people who had been born in Ireland living all over England. The census asked place of birth & those who had been born in England, Wales or Scotland were supposed to specify a town, while those from other places were left more open. Many of the Irish just say "Ireland", as in the US censuses, but many others included at least a county, which is how I found out that my gggf, who was living in Birmingham, was theoretically born in Rosscommon. (Of course, as Geraghty is common in Rosscommon, it hasn't done me a whole lot of good thus far to know it anyway.... <g>) I'm happy to try lookups in the cd's if your family was still in Great Britain in 1881 and you have have enough information to try to narrow the field somewhat. 1. [PA-LAC] Harris Washburn Street Cemetery
    2. Shawn Presner
    3. Dear List On a recent trip to Washburn, I uncovered the headstone of my gg gf John Harries (Harris) with a lot of help from one Iva Hanlon. He died at the Avondale Mine Disaster in 1869. Now I have uncovered a series of new questions. The stone shows a distinct "star" placed above the decease's name and a Welsh inscription below. Any idea what this star may have meant? Surrounding the stone, which was broken and difficult to read, were fairly recently placed hosta plants. They encircle the stone. This in itself is not strange, but I don't know of many family members still in the Scranton area. Apparently there is at least one. John Harris had 4 children. One daughter, Mary Ann, I know nothing about. My ggf, Morgan Harris, was his only son. I have no Harris relatives in Scranton. He had two daughters, Elizabeth who married Thomas Hughes and Jane who married John Matthews. They lived on Hyde Park Ave. I know there were two gsons (?) Ralph and Art(Hughes) One more possibility is that his widow married again, their name was Morgan and Houck. Does anyone have a connection to these names? Does anyone have a connection to HUGHES or MATTHEWS or their descendants in the Hyde Park section of Scranton. Perhaps I have cousins that care enough about this grave, I never knew I had. 1. Re: [PA-LAC] Irish to US via England???
    2. Alayne Jenkins
    3. Joe This is a very complex question. Irish immigration to England was widespread parricularly during the Irish famine - including Scotland and Wales. Part of the reason in the late 19C for example was that Irish workers were instrumental in building the railroads in the uk and hence spread with them. There are large pockets of irish descendents in Liverpool, Machester and Birmingham but more detail is need from you to really answer your query. 1. [PA-LAC] Irish to US via England
    2. In response to MARY CASEY, I have the same problem not knowing where my TEEVAN ancestors came from in Ireland. All my records just say "Ireland". I do know that they emigrated in May 1870 to NY and was naturalized in Oct 1982 thanks to Joe Breyer from GRSNP, who has been very helpful in my quest. I plan to visit Scranton the 2nd week of Sept and I am looking forward to meeting Joe. Sadly PATRICK'S (my grandfather) naturalization papers were hard to read and with little information. They settled in Dunmore, PA between 1870-75 since 1-2 children were born there. There is some question about HENRY's(Patrick's brother) place of birth, since the 1880 census says Ireland, 1900 says PA and 1910 says Canada. So much for the census. I plan to also search for the Ships Passenger list now that I know an exact month/yr and port of entry, but I afraid that all I'll get is where they sailed from and not where they actually lived. I am very thankful for the information that I do have, since I have only been working on my family for the past 4 yrs. Verna

    1. Re: [PA-LAC] Relocating Gravesites
    2. Susan W Pieroth
    3. Not off topic. Unfortunately it happens in every state. A high percentage are just small family cemeteries that are moved to a larger cemetery. But others are moved for convenience and not always done well or following all the legal rules. See http://www.rootsweb.com/~palackaw/forest/washave.html for a more recent example in Scranton. Susan Jamieob256@aol.com wrote: > > This may be a little off topic, but I was wondering if the below is common practice when gravesites are located.
