    3. No, that would be the Sanatarium on West Mountain, outside the city limits. I believe it (physically) exists today, on the west side of the turnpike from Jackson Ave. / West Mountain Road. -----Original Message----- From: Dfconcannon@cs.com <Dfconcannon@cs.com> To: PALACKAW-L@rootsweb.com <PALACKAW-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Wednesday, September 05, 2001 7:41 PM Subject: [PA-LAC] TB Hospital? >Hello to all > >Is the West Side hospital the one they called the TB hospital? I did have success with it. She died on Thursday, January 8, 1981. The obituary, which was in the paper on Saturday, January 10, 1981, read: Margaret Jenkins Mrs. Margaret Jenkins, a guest at Mid-Valley Long Term Care Center, formerly of Jackson Heights Apartments, died Thursday after an illness. Her husband was the late Edward Jenkins. Born in Scranton, daughter of the late Arthur and Mary Ann Jones Jones, she was a member and former deaconess of the First Welsh Baptist Church. She was also a member of the church choir and the Stares and Pairs Club, and a member of the ILGWU Retired Folks Club. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Edgar Howell, Scranton, and four nieces. The funeral will be Sunday at 5 p.m. from Davies and Jones Funeral Chapel, 135 S. Main Ave., with services by Rev. Theodore E. Davis, First Welsh Baptist Church. Interment, Washburn Street Cemetery. Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m.; Sunday 3 to 5 p.m. On Sunday, January 11th, there was just a brief notice that read: Jenkins -- Mrs. Margaret Jenkins, formerly of Jackson Heights Apartments. Today at 5 p.m. from Davies and Jones Funeral Chapel, 135 S. Main Ave. Interment, Washburn Street Cemetery. Viewing 3 to 5 p.m. As before, I will put the articles copied from the paper in an envelope and get them off to you. If there is anything else that I can help with, please let me know. I purchased the Latter Day Saints 1880 Census for the US and the Index. If there is any information in it that may help in your search, please just let me know. I'll be happy to look it up for you. We here in the US are about to enter the season of beauty with the trees turning to their autumn colors very soon. I always enjoy it so much. I send my best to you and your family and I'll "talk" with you again soon. 1. [PA-LAC] 1860 Hyde Park(attn Rich Reese)
    2. Hi, Hopefully you can help me out again. Thomas and Catherine Coggins were not on the 1860 census where I hoped to find them. I thought they would be in Bellvue Flats. A fellow Coggins researcher checked the film on these pages.  Roll #1134, from page 415 to 545 end of roll.    #1135, from page 852 to end of Scranton on page 1116. They were not there! I think I may have been looking in the wrong place. Even though Thomas was in Ward 6 in 1870, I think he may have been in Hyde Park in 1860. I have the deed index for 1858 and is shows Thomas purchasing land in Hyde Park. Would that still be on one of the above rolls? Thanks for your help. If anyone runs across this family in 1850 or 1860 please let me know. Carol

    1. Re: [PA-LAC] Richard JAMES III
    2. Richard M. Reese
    3. In all likelyhood he would have been born at home. However, the West Side hospital on S. Main Avenue is a possibility. More of a clinic, having only a few beds, West Side went out of business in the 1930's just prior to the death of its' founder Dr. Daniel W. Evans. The other hospitals were Scranton State General located on Mulberry Street, demolished in the early 1970's I believe; Hahnemann, now CMC, and Moses-Taylor - both are in the Hill section just east of center city. Although the county stopped recording of births Dec. 31, 1905, when the Commonwealth (Bureau of Vital Statistics) took over, the Board of Health of the City of Scranton did maintain some record keeping functions. Perhaps either of them would be a better direction to go. -----Original Message----- From: Jim Long <cactuspatch@charter.net> To: PALACKAW-L@rootsweb.com <PALACKAW-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Wednesday, September 05, 2001 2:12 PM Subject: [PA-LAC] Richard JAMES III >I need some advise or assistance. 2. Dear List, I'm looking for someone who lives in Scranton and can make a copy of an obituary for me. I would love to get a copy of the obituary for my great grandmother who died in Scranton in 1946.  I will gladly reimburse someone for any fees (copying, parking fees, etc.) that they may have to incur. The information I have on my great grandmother is as follows: Bridget Elizabeth PHILLIPS (nee Dougherty) Died April 5, 1946 in Scranton, PA Living at 434 Genet St. at the time of her death. 1. [PA-LAC] Alfred Hamley and Bettie Hawkins
    2. Patty Champion Sanderlin
    3. I just heard from Vally View Memorial Park, John Babyak was great, he scanned in the internment cards and e-mailed them to me, He will also be e-mailing me pictures of my ancestor's graves. But in his letter he mentioned that the above people were buried in the same lot as my what I suspect is my Champion's. The people in this lot are: Thomas Champion Jr and Sr Harriet Champion Selina Champion John Champion Katie Champion All were moved from Shadylane and besides Katie all were adults. Because they were moved, I have no dates on the above people, The monument has fallen over and is in the process of being repaired, so if there is aditional information we will have to wait for it to be repaired to see if there is other information on the reverse side. The only names I reconize from the above list are Katie and Thomas. Katie died oct 1892 12 days short of her 18th birthday. There are only 2 adult Thomas Champion's that I am aware of. Thomas H Champion who is also buried in Valley View but not in this lot, and his father Thomas, who is Suspect is Thomas Jr above. I have never heard the names of Hamley and Hawkins so I can't connect them with my family at this time if the above Champion's are actually mine. I am fairly certain that they are since any Champion's I have found in Lackawanna Co are my ancestors. 3. Hi List! What a great site! I keep hoping maybe someone knows of my long, lost relatives. John and Julia (Juliana) Slenska lived in Jermyn. Although their 8 children were born in May- field or Carbondale area. They are both buried in St. Michael's cemetery in Jermyn. I can't find any info on that cemetery either. They were in that area around 1890-1925 or so, until they moved to a dairy farm in upstate N.Y. Washington. These streets are in the same ward with Chestnut. Sorry that I have not been able to help. Iva
