Both the PA-LACKAW and the PA-LUZERN lists have census lookup aids on-line. Since Lackawanna County was part of Luzerne until August 1878, you will need to look at the Luzerne RootsWeb page. http://www.rootsweb.com/~paluzern/luzerne.htm -----Original Message----- From: BrennaJne@aol.com <BrennaJne@aol.com> To: PALACKAW-L@rootsweb.com <PALACKAW-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Monday, September 17, 2001 1:27 PM Subject: [PA-LAC] 1850 and 1860 census >Can anyone tell me which film No. that Scranton and Wilkes Barre would be on >in the 1850 and 1860 census? > > >Lenora from Wisconsin >Researching: >Weber, Hengel - Luxembourg >Duckgeischel, Rosar, Dippre,Griswold,Burg,Grim-Germany >Hayburn, Kelley, Cairns, Dean-Ireland/Scotland > > >==== PALACKAW Mailing List ==== >Subscribers -- Off topic postings (particularly political, advertising, or just plain rude) >AND responses on the list are grounds for being Unsubscribed >Please forward any offending email to <mailto:pieroth@ix.netcom.com> >To unsubscribe: http://www.rootsweb.com/~palackaw/index.html#MailingList > >

Dear Friends, Do any of you have Irish relatives who immigrated to Hartlepool, County Durham, England after the Famine late 1840's/1850 for work, later immigrating to Scranton? In particular, Dominick GILMARTIN & wife Ann JUDGE GILMARTIN and any friends and relatives of them. GEGIN (and various spellings of that name) is one possible connected surname. I am searching for GILMARTIN & JUDGE families who settled in Scranton in and around 1863. I would like to know where they came from in Ireland. English records do not state exact birthplace. Thank you. Mary L. Casey
Hello everyone, I was wondering whether a kind soul could tell me what enumeration district Genet Street (South Side) would be for the 1910 and 1920 census. Thanks Sean Researching from Scranton: Shields, Joyce, McNulty, Harrison, Butler, Madden, Andres, Altmann.
The Spirit of America by Richard Roeper, Chicago Sun-Times I am the spirit of America. I am the Stars and Stripes waving proudly from homes, schools, office buildings and government centers. I am New York City Fire Chief Peter J. Ganci Jr., Deputy Fire Commissioner William Feehan, Second-in-Command Tom Von Essen and Rev. Mychal Judge. I am the hundreds of yet-unnamed firefighters, police officers and Port Authority officers who are missing and will not be found. I am the men and women who knew they were going to die and thus jumped, choosing to have some measure of control over the last breath of their lives. I am the thousands of volunteers who have rolled up their sleeves and donned surgical masks to aid the workers digging through the incomprehensible rubble and debris in lower Manhattan. I am Michael Benfante, 22, and John Cerqueria, 36, who carried a disabled woman down 68 floors of a World Trade Center stairwell and placed the woman in an emergency van. I am the passengers aboard United Airlines Flight 93 who fought with their hijackers and brought down the plane outside Pittsburgh, 250 miles from its intended target in Washington, DC. I am the dozens of passengers aboard the other hijacked planes who called loved ones to say goodbye, or tried to alert authorities. I am President George W. Bush, doing and saying the right things in the face of an unprecedented national tragedy. I am former President Bill Clinton and former Vice President Al Gore, voicing unconditional support for the President. I am the members of Congress, standing united on the steps of the U. S. Capitol and spontaneously breaking into God Bless America. I am New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, wearing a cap and sweat shirt emblazoned with the logo of the New York City Fire Department, standing strong, calm and forceful while addressing the city. I am the loved ones who are holding up photos on television, pasting leaflets on the side of TV news vans, and keeping vigil in the faint hopes that their mother, their father, their child, will be found. I am the crowds lining the streets of lower Manhattan, cheering the rescue workers and truck drivers and technicians heading to the disaster site. I am the nurses and doctors who have come to New York City to help. I am the millions of Americans who have reached out to friends with e-mails and phone calls to say, "I hope you’re all right, and I hope you didn’t lose anyone close to you. And if I haven’t said it lately, I love you." I am the thousands upon thousands of Americans in Los Angeles and Denver and Phoenix and Detroit and Philadelphia who have lined up to donate blood. I am the electric ribbon of red, white, and blue rimming the top of the John Hancock Center on a September night. I am the New Yorkers who have laid flowers and hand-scribbled words of mourning at the site of the disaster. I am the construction workers who fashioned stretchers from materials at their nearby work sites and joined the firefighters and the police in rescue efforts. I am the Chicago-area firefighters who rode in a caravan of recreational vehicles and sport utility vehicles to New York to offer assistance to their colleagues. I am the people gathered at Riverfront Park in Spokane, Washington, singing Amazing Grace. I am the business professionals who have donated coffee, food, hotel rooms, phones, and other services. I am the journalists covered in soot and risking their own safety so they can tell the world what has happened. I am the camera operators who stood strong and took video and still photographs, even as people around them ran for their lives. I am General Electric, donating $10 million to the families of emergency workers who have lost their lives. I am the investigators who are working swiftly and with precision to identify the terrorists and their accomplices. I am the Pentagon workers who aren’t coming home. I am Ronnie Clifford, who was trying to save a woman’s life outside the first tower, even as his own sister was aboard the United Airlines plane that was about to hit the second tower. I am the rescue personnel who toil to the point of exhaustion, take a break and then get back to the most grisly and heartbreaking work imaginable. I am the millions of Americans who will mourn, weep, pray, and never forget. I am the spirit of America, and I am alive and strong, and you can never kill me.
Elizabeth DAVIS, JAMES, EVANS. Elizabeth Davis was born about 1890 - 1900. She married Richard JAMES II and had one child, born in Scranton in 1919, Richard JAMES III. Her husband, a Scranton policeman flees into the night after a suspicious shooting and is never heard from again. Elizabeth remarries Thomas EVANS, a Scranton fireman (Company #3) who dies in the line of duty April 30, 1944. He is buried in Washburn St. Cemetery. Any link with Elizabeth DAVIS, Richard JAMES II or the obituary for Thomas Evans would be a great help. Thanks for your help Jim cactuspatch@charter.net
I have a number of photos from my grandfather, that are dated 1905 - 1909. The photos were taken in Scranton and Elmhurst Pa. My Grandfather had an Aunt Christina Teichmann who lived on Maple St Scranton through the 1920 Census. She had 4 children: Bertha 1868 Paulina 1870 Catherine 1873 Amelia Dec 1885 One of these 4 females may have gotten married and had the following children, I am guessing the ages of the children. John 1 yr in 1905 Kate 15 yrs in 1908 John 5 yrs, Howard 8 yrs, Lena 8 yrs, Bertha 16 yrs, and Elsie 7 yrs dated 1909 Baby Irene 1909 Lottie & Kit 1909 Mil, Hy, & Baby 1909 Elsie Rosar 6 yrs 1909 Rosar looks like a last name although I could not find anyone in the 1910 census with children that match the name above. Does anyone reconize these names? State law required that a person's age be 21, otherwise consent of either a parent or a guardian was required. However, I have seen a few exceptions that have slipped by. One was because both parents were deceased and no guardian had ever been appointed, but it should say that on the license. -----Original Message----- From: RobinVanM@aol.com <RobinVanM@aol.com> To: PALACKAW-L@rootsweb.com <PALACKAW-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Wednesday, September 12, 2001 4:25 PM Subject: [PA-LAC] Permissible Age for Marriage >Does anyone know how old a woman had to be to get married in Lackawanna >County without her parents' permission in 1892? How ever. In this black time in our American history, let us not be quick to condemn, judge or get outright nasty with those who do feel the need to express their beliefs or opinions on these lists. Freedom of speech is one of the many freedoms we as Americans have to enjoy. Stop and think a minute, maybe these lists are the only place that some people feel they can utilize their freedom of speech and feel comfortable doing so. Deleting them or banning them from a list just because you don't like what they have said or the hornets nest they may have stirred up is just plain childish. Have those of you that are list admits forgotten our freedom of speech? I myself am a list admit to several lists. Nothing sickens me more than a list admit who runs their list as if they were a member of the Nazi SS. Tuesday was a very horrible day in our history as Americans. It brought back many bad memories for many people from all walks of life. Some tragedies I can think of off hand that would come to mind would be Pearl Harbor, The Holocaust, The Munich Olympic games, The bombing of the USS Cole just to name a few. So remember your loved ones lost, those who have lost loved ones, family or friends. Most of all be compassionate towards your fellow man or woman. Lets pull together, give our support where we can. If your feeling angry, go donate some blood don't chastise your neighbor! Boot from your lists should you feel the need, it will only prove that you don't believe in our American freedoms that many take for granted. While myself and many of my armed service brothers and sisters fight to defend our freedoms. John tired of spending outrageous amounts on inkjet cartridges? Does anyone know how old a woman had to be to get married in Lackawanna County without her parents' permission in 1892? My grandfather emigrated from a tiny village in Hungary to Scranton in 1891. I assumed he got settled and sent back to the village for the woman who became his first wife. She arrived May 2, 1892 when she was 16 but it appears they didn't marry until June 6, 1893 I have her church birth record, her ship record, and their marriage license). The only reason for the delay in their getting married that I can think of is her age.
