The historical New York Times Digitization Project has online historic newspapers in digital form. Now available is Chapter 2: The Civil War Years, 1860-1866. What is especially unique about the site is the use of software that allows you to enlarge the size of the scanned image without downloading a special program. For headlines it's not necessary, but for the fuzzy print in columns, enlarging was very helpful. If you have broadband access I recommend the 14 minute color movie about the part written material, especially newspapers, as well as the teletype, played in the Civil war. The movie is 137 MB (yes - that's 137 megabytes - about what 2 CDs will hold). And it's all free. You can register to be notified when additional chapters are added, but it's not required. http://www.nyt.ulib.org/ Susan

Mike, Would Minooka have ever played All Hyde Park Baseball Team? My uncle, Fred Battaglia, was the manager his whole life. The field is now named after him and the politician who got it changed. It is now called Battaglia Field. His son has a lot of scrap books of those days. Ruth

The Lackawanna genweb site has obituaries and the rootsweb/ancestry.com Lackawanna board has about 3500 of them ( http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=admin.board&r=rw&p=localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.lackawanna ), some of which are from 1918. The last two months of 1918 Scranton Times has been indexed so far for the Obituary Times on rootsweb. ( http://obits.rootsweb.com/ ) There is also a NEPA board on rootsweb/ancestry which has obits from Scranton as well as surrounding counties, but I'm not certain of the time frame. I have lost contact with a lady that answered a post on this site about a month ago. Subject, Margaret BARRETT b. PA 1793, moved to IL through Canada d. 1870. married Richard LONG 1808. Please contact. Thanks Jim
I not only have done it, but highly recommend it. Keep it simple and to the point---a Stamped envelope is good, a phone call has often put me in touch with some very helpful distant relations, that I find out aren't that distant when stories start to fly. About the worse that could happen is somebody that isn't interested might think your a nut----but maybe we all are. I now regularly correspond on the Net with at least two Third Cousins at least weekly. Even an uninterested party can put you in touch with a relative that shares our addiction. I am in the processing of contacting potential long distant relatives of mine who are currently living (fortunately we have a unique last name). I would like to send a form for them to list all of their family information so I can fill in some missing links in the family tree. Now my question, has anyone else tried to do this (i.e. contacting living relatives you have never met)? Can you suggest a form that would be simple for others that are perhaps not interested in genealogy to fill out? Can you make any suggestions on how to approach people I have never met and ask them for their families information? In this day and age I know most people are hesitate and protective of any of their vital info (i.e. date of births, date of marriages, etc.). Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Allison
Hi Listers Last week, my husband and I drove to Scranton from Maryland to do some research on my TEEVAN ancestors. Unfortunately, we were there when this terrible tragedy occurred. At least for a little while we were concentrating on something good. It was neat seeing all the town signs that I often see mentioned on the list, such as Pittston, Clarks Summit, Wyoming etc. We visited St. Mary's Cemetery in Dunmore, St. Catherine's Cemetery in Moscow and located the graves and took pictures of the head stones. Sadly, when we visited Maplewood Cemetery, we weren't able to locate the grave of my ggrandfather ELI DICKINSON, since the cemetery was in such bad shape. Grave stones were overturned, grass very high covering a lot of ground grave markers. Since the cemetery lot bordered some woods, we were afraid of snakes. We didn't see any caretaker, but was able to obtain his name and number for later use. We also visited the homestead on Drinker St and Throop St which my family owned and took pictures of that also (with the present owner's permission of course). Everyone was very congenial and helpful. We met Joe Bryer from the Genealogy Society. He was very helpful with a great sense of humor. He was able to give us some leads which proved very helpful. Even though I came away, not finding everything I wanted to find, it was still a very rewarding trip. We're looking forward to going back in the Spring after the winter thaw. Verna
Hello Does some kind soul happen to know the name of what use to be called Union Cemetery? Donna from CT Looking for WORRELL, BROWN, PRICE, and MIDDLETON
As part of family history report, whatever form it may take, I have always intended to include a section on the emigration pattern from Kilglass and Easkey Parishes to Scranton, Pennsylvania, USA. I'm particularly interested in those that originally settled in the Bellevue Section of Scranton, but I feel it better to include other sections of and around Scranton; for now I am not including Wilkes-Barre. The report will contain not just my ancestors, but any surname that I can find (from Kilglass and Easkey)with connections to Scranton. I plan to make a comparison of the living and working conditions my ancestors faced in Ireland and America. I would like to do it in such a way that it will be of interest to the people of both countries. I plan to do it in such a way that it can be lifted from my report and placed in applicable historical societies in both countries. Over the past couple months I have been searching for surnames of Kilglass and Easkey Parishes in the Ellis Island data base. I have had some success, but know that I have only scratched the surface. In order to produce the best result possible, I would like to solicit help from other Sligo and Lackawanna list members. If you know of any emigrants from Kilglass and Easkey Parishes, to the Scranton area, please contact me off-list. I say off-list for two reasons: I don't want to impose heavy traffic on those not interested in this effort. Secondly, I cannot transmit files through the list. I don't know how I can do this without some sort of Word table, or Excel database. If the list owners feel I am wrong by taking this off-list please let me know. Below is a list of the surnames I've identified with the specified connections. If you have interest in any of these surnames feel free to contact me for further information. Be patient waiting for a response...I'm afraid I may get a large number of requests. It is my plan to make the data available to anyone who has an interest. Once I've established what data fields would best serve the effort I will set-up a list of interested individuals and start the collecting, compiling and disbursing effort. For now I will be glad to get additions to the below list. I hope I am not "butting-in" on someone with a similar idea. If so, I am willing to share the effort,or back-off and let you finish. If your goals are different than mine perhaps we can work something out. I know how much work is involved and I would not be too happy if someone "claim-jumped" my effort. Here is the list I sure hope it is not too large for a single transmission. It seems very small for all of the time I put into it.
