A couple of other people are listed place of birth as Brisen and then there are a few with Germany listed. Does anyone know what this census taker ment by Brisen? 3. Lenora, Tom, and others who responded, thank you for the information. The #5 designation seems to be up for grabs however. Norma Reese of Forest Hill Cemetery and a researcher went over old records in which #5 was mentioned ,and the best fit was the Williams Street cemetery location. Same church - no question now. Anyway, thanks to Sue P <wench8391@yahoo.com> the A to E portion is now on http://www.rootsweb.com/~palackaw/forest/stmary2.html and Allison is working on the other from the "original". As for pictures, send them my way with the information for the search engine to pick up and I'll put together a web page. From the number of Rosar entries that could be a lot <grin>. Now that I finally have a speedy cable modem no warning needed, and no need to size the images - I have all the software. 1. [PA-LAC] St. Mary's Assumption
    2. The cemetery diagram on the web site is for St. Mary's Assumption(St. Mary's catholic German church) which is still in existance I visited it about 2 years ago. It is on Stafford Ave. in Scranton and it is the cemetery for St. Mary's Assuption on River St. Is is referred to as #5 German Cemetery also. I have a lot of pictures of the cemetery mainly Rosar and Dippre families. Also have one of Fr. Christ marker who was a priest there for many years. This is a great addition to the site as St. Mary's Assumption church on River street is very slow to get requests done. I suggested that they get some volunteers to put all the records either on microfilm or in a database and either submit it to the web or keep it at the church and when request comes it the secretary could just print out all the information requested by an individual. The number on the some of the images are birth and death dates. Example Ave. N Row D-F there is Stella Phillips in 3rd column and it says 94- 17 and I know that she was born in 1894 and died 1917. Anyway this is a great additon and thanks Lenora from Wisconsin Researching: Weber, Hengel - Luxembourg Duckgeischel, Rosar, Dippre,Griswold,Burg,Grim-Germany Hayburn, Kelley, Cairns, Dean-Ireland/Scotland

    2. St. Mary's Cemetery and Pittston Ave. Cemetery do not back up each other. The churches themselves do. Neither cemetery is next to the church. Hickory St. Presbyterian Church, formerly German Presbyterian Church is on Hickory St. between Cedar Ave. and Pittston Ave. (the 400 block). Pittston Ave. Cemetery is on Pittston Ave, but about 9-10 blocks away. Directly behind Hickory St. Presbyterian, on the 400 block of River St. (one street over) is St. Mary's of the Assumption Church. The cemetery is on Stafford Ave. You can also get to it by going up Palm St. off S. Webster Ave. It used to be called the Number 5 Cemetery. Hope this clears up any confusion. Tom Price

    3. With the GREAT help from Lenora in Wisconsin, I have been able to find my one of my Great Grandaunt's daughters, Bertha TEICHMANN. Bertha married a Max PHILLIPS and had what looks like 8 children (per 1900 and 1920) census. Does anyone out there knows anything more? Here is a list of DOB,DOD and children. Max PhillipsDOB 1862 Scranton Pa, DOD Dec 29, 1908 Scranton Pa Bertha nee Teichmann DOB Nov 1867 (?Germany) Catherine (aka Katie) DOB March 1887 Charlotte (aka Lottie) DOB Nov 1889 Magdelena (aka Lena) DOB Dec 1892 Jacob DOB Nov 1894 Peter DOB Sept 1899 Bethra DOB abt 1902 John DOB abt 1905 Jane DOB abt 1908 Leo DOB abt 1909 In the years around 1905 - 1908 they all lived on a farm in the Elmhurst area. During the 1920 Census Bertha and her youngest children were living at 415 Alder St with a elder Catherine Phillips (age 78). 1. [PA-LAC] St. Mary's Clarification Please
    2. Susan W Pieroth
    3. As some of you know I don't live in Scranton, or PA for that matter. St. Mary's Assumption Church and cemetery(s) has me totally confused. Before I link the new page with the diagrams http://www.rootsweb.com/~palackaw/forest/stmary2.html I would like to get it right. I have searched the old messages and come to the conclusion that the cemetery diagrammed is on Stafford Avenue and backs up to the Presbyterian German Pittston Avenue Cemetery (listings recently provided by Tom Price http://www.rootsweb.com/~palackaw/forest/pittston1.html). The church, St. Mary's Assumption (German) Catholic Church, also has the cemetery, now closed to new burials, on Williams Street, Dunmore (South Scranton). This cemetery, referred to as #5 in some documents, has all the stones removed and a plaque put in it's place. That plaque and list and available information is on the web site at http://www.rootsweb.com/~palackaw/forest/stmary.html. Am I right - close? I found the following references: - St. Mary's German Catholic church in Scranton (St. Mary's Assumption.) - St. Mary's Cemetery on Stafford Avenue in South Scranton is still existence; however, the road is closed as it approaches the bridge just before the cemetery. You have to park the car and walk down to it. I'm not positive but I believe the cemetery is associated with St. Mary of the Assumption Church on the 400 block of River Street in South Scranton. - St. Mary's Assumption (aka German Catholic) Church - St. Mary's Assumption Church Cemetery on Stafford Ave. - St Marys of the Assumption parish on River St. In south Scranton is the one who has the cemetery on Stafford Ave. - The back of St. Mary's borders the back of Hickory St. Presbyterian Church, formerly German Presbyterian; Hickory St., of course being on Hickory St., and St. Mary's on River St. Both churches were (are) right in the heart of the German section of South Side, and both were German churches, and both had cemeteries, St. Mary's being back on Stafford Ave. and Hickory St. being on Pittston Ave. Thanks, Susan

    3. Allison has provided high quality scans of the sheet she was sent. Unfortunately the copies were not high quality. Apparently these are copies of copies of copies, plus text on the reverse shows through and adds to the confusion. They have been cleaned up and optimized for clarity as much as possible and linked from web page http://www.rootsweb.com/~palackaw/forest/stmary2.html The two detail pages actually include more sections than originally thought - perhaps 1/5 of the property. If anyone would like to take on the challenge of creating a table (in Word, Excel or Access) that I can then convert to a web page, I would very much appreciate it. The material will get posted faster that way. One table for each of the two main sheets (Avenues A - E, and Avenue N) would be needed - thus two volunteers would really speed things up. With the surnames on a web page the search engine will find them. Thanks again Allison. "Allison L. 3. I wrote to St. Mary's of the Assumption on Pittston Avenue over a 14 months ago to request information on the German side of my family. Well I finally got a response and alot of information. Included in the information they sent was a chart listing of plots/graves and last names of those buried in the graves for two sections in the cemetary AVE D and AVE N as they refer to them. These two sections make up approximately 1/4 of the cemetery. They also sent a map showing how the sections of the cemetary are laid out. If anyone is wondering if they have family members buried in this cemetery I will be more than willing to let you know if matching last names are on the forms and what section, row and number those names are in. Please understand I don't have first names on the one form nor do I have any dates. If you are unfamiliar with St. Mary's it was founded primarily by German's which is evident by scaning the last names on the cemetery plots. Please e-mail me directly if you would like me to check what I have for you. allison@ancestrydetective.com Thanks, Allison

    2. Sue P
    3. >From another mailing list: As a free alternative or supplement to commissioning an expensive full study to find records of our Irish Ancestors, I have acccumulated Irish Church Records from my own research and from the research of many other generous donors who have also contributed their records. I have formatted and batched together and donated these records, over a couple of years to Rootsweb, which provides free database server space to me and free access to you, so that the information taken from these records, including many which have never before been published by the LDS or anyone, can be accessed for free. The latest update, which occurred just last week, was an additonal new batch of about 3,400 records. The total number of Baptisms and and Chruch records of Marriages has now reached 9,511 which now puts the goal of 10,000 records by the end of this year well within reach. The latest batch includes many from County Galway and several generous Galway list members. Since the index lately does not show counties, you have to look at the full record to see the county. There are lots of Galway records among them, even though the indexed ones are the original Tipperary and Limerick records. Please take a look at this database; search all your surnames, and please spread the word about this free access to a database of nearly 10,000 Irish Church Records to other County lists you subscribe to. The site address is: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~irishchurchrecords/index.html ROOTSWEB'S IRISH CHURCH RECORDS DATABASE They also may be accessed from other Rootsweb search sites, but I built this one, which shows only the Irish Records and does not co-mingle them with English or other United Kingdom records as Rootsweb sites do. If you have any baptismal or marriage church records and you would like to join in this effort to provide FREE access to thousands of Irish Church Records, please note the link at the bottom of that page, on "How to donate to this Database." It's all about people sharing and helping each other. If so, could you pass along your experiences. Thanks Grant Kreinberg, Suisun, CA
