    3. Fred, The last 2 examples in your list may need rethinking: "... Children of your parents 1st cousin are your 1st cousin once removed. Grandhildren of your parents 1st cousin are your 1st cousin twice removed. Stop and think about it Fred" Shouldn't your first example above be "2nd cousins" (common great grandparents), and the second example be "2nd cousins once removed?" 2. Julie Blackman
    3. Hi Bob! Thanks so much for such a detailed reply - it was most welcome. This is a very irritating family! I think that the first Joseph Jenkins in Market Street is the more likely to be my friend's relative, which is a shame as there are no siblings which could give me a clue to his roots. Thanks also for his marriage details - in fact the only official records I have of Joseph, is his marriage, his death and an entry on the Wales 1901 census - it really is agony. I'm researching the Jenkins family on behalf of a friend (for the friend's father's 80th birthday - as a surprise - his birthday is end of June and I'm making very little headway for the amount of hours spent!). The 'Josephs' that appear on earler cenus all appear, when tracked, to marry other people. Elvira is the only family member who is rock solid. Well I won't let it beat me so am hoping to find a record of the funeral in a local newspaper which may give mourners and relationships, or may be baptism records for his children with godparents - am scraping the barrell now! Thanks again - lovely sunny Saturday morning in Wales - so definitely gardening weather! All the best, Julie ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robert O'Neill" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, May 06, 2005 5:51 AM Subject: RE: [PA-LAC] JOSEPH JENKINS BORN SWANSEA WALES 1864 > Dear Julie: > > There are two Joseph Jenkins listed in Scranton in the 1890-1892 city > directories. > > 1) Joseph Jenkins, 1890, miner, 425 E. 3. Dear Julie: There are two Joseph Jenkins listed in Scranton in the 1890-1892 city directories. 1) Joseph Jenkins, 1890, miner, 425 E. Markel (probably a mispelling of Market Street) No other Jenkins are listed at this address. However, Thomas Bromage, shoemaker, 1890 and John C. Nicholson, laborer, 1892 are listed at the same address 2) Joseph Jenkins, 1890-1, fire boss, 1918 Wayne avenue Others at the same address: Job Jenkins, laborer John Jenkins, boss Lewis Jenkins, driver David Jones, miner Henry Morgan, miner 1881 Wales Census: 4 Joseph Jenkins in Wales in or near Swansea. None have a father named William. The following entry was interesting: Carmarthen Rd 2 Glasbrook Row (Gendros), Swansea Higher, Glamorgan, Wales Thomas Jenkins abt 1851, Head Elizabeth Jenkins abt 1853, Wife David Jenkins abt 1875, Son Joseph Jenkins abt 1873 , Son Hannah Jenkins abt 1877, Daughter Llewellyn Jenkins abt 1880, Son [Lewis in Scranton??] John Jenkins abt 1855, Lodger Not headed by a William, but the men's names, including the lodger John, match those at 1918 Wayne Avenue, Scranton in 1892. From the England and Wales, Civil Registration Index: 1837-1983 Marriage of Joseph Jenkins and Elvira Davies Quarter: June 1889 District: Merthyr Tydfil County: Breconshire Glamorgan Mid Glamorgan Volume: 11a Page: 880 I hope this is helpful. 3. Dear List! Am desperately trying to locate the above family member for a friend. To say he is elusive is putting it mildly and I can hardly sleep at nights trying to think of new ways to locate his family! Here are the details: JOSEPH JENKINS married Elvira Davies in Wales in 1889 and apparently immediately emmigrated to Scranton Pennsylvania to carve a new life for them both. He was a coal miner later a Colliery Timberman below ground. He supposedly emmigrated with his brothers - also miners. Elvira refused to join him and he returned home and their first child was born in Wales in 1897. Thus, sometime or all of the time between 1889 and 1897 he was residing in Pennsylvania, hopefully during the 1890 census. One of my problems is that Joseph does not appear on any census in the UK prior to the 1901 census, at least not in a form I recognise. On his marriage certificate his father is William Jenkins also a coal miner. The national birth index for England and Wales lists no Joseph Jenkins with a father William born in Swansea for circa 1864. If I could find Joseph with some brothers it would definitely help in pinpointing him over here! I have checked the few passenger lists that are available with Ancestry.com and he doesn't appear on those either! He's driving me batty! Does anyone have any suggestions/help? Thanks so much Julie in Wales

In later years this was known as either the Newton-Ransom, or Luzerne County, Convalesant Home. The Berkins Twp. reference mystifies me. I believe you must mean Jenkins Twp. which is just outside Pittston. All of those locations are Luzerne County; however, I am at a loss to identify any institutions other than the Pittston Hospital in that area.
