Debbie, Thanks for your note. What I've given you is what I know at this stage. All I have is the possibility that Charles Winkle and family may have been at Scranton during the early 1870s. When/if I get back to Scranton, the collection of City Directories at the Albright Library (or at the Historical Society) is the logical place to look. Need some additional info if we are to help you. Do you have any censuses ? Where in the states did they live ? Birth, death and marriage years and places ? Spouse's ? Children ? Charles Winkle was born in Germany, although when and where have not yet been determined. His wife's name was Minnie, and they are known to have had at least two children: Charles Winkle b.1866 Germany d.1918 Elmira, NY Emma Christine Winkle b.1869 (see below) d.1945 There are two versions as to where Emma Christine was born. Her marriage certificate says she was born in Germany, but her death certificate says Scranton. Chances are that she was actually born in Germany, since she would have provided that information at her marriage. On the other hand, the fact that her death certificate suggests that the informant (a family member?) thought that Emma Christine's birth place was Scranton. And that gives a strong hint that the family may have lived in Scranton for a period of time after they came to the USA, perhaps during the 1870s. They do not appear in the 1867/68 Scranton City Directory, but that may be too early for them. Has anybody encountered Charles Winkle and family in Scranton during the last third of the 19th century? Is anybody aware of the Winkle (not Winkler) surname at Scranton, even if another family? Thanks in advance for input! I'm trying to help a friend trace her great grandfather. Dear Fellow Message Board Members, It has been almost 2 years since I made my announcement on the various message boards, this board included, that my book, "Green Is The Valley, Blue Are The Hills," was posted on the WWW for all to read, "Free Of Charge." Many of you are probably aware of the previous notification, but some of the newer members might not have known about it. For those who might be interested, the URN is http://fethard.com/crane The book is still and will be posted should you desire to take advantage of reading it. Since the time that I posted my original notice and people read my book, I have received many warm responses. A few of these responses included the question as to whether or not a printed and bound copy of the book was available. Unfortunately, I was forced to respond that no printed copy of the book existed other than what was posted on the web. Naturally, I felt quite disappointed in making this response. Well, I am happy to announce that my book will now be placed in print as I have contracted with a publisher to print and market my book. In order that I am not accused of "spaming" this board or any other board, I am requesting that you please contact me "off-board" at my e-mail address and I will provide you with the information for ordering my book. My e-mail address is [email protected] As a brief summary I can tell you what my book is about. First of all, if anyone is looking for a list of names in order to complete their own family tree, you might be a bit disappointed. Although I do include a brief summary of my own family names, it is quite limited in the grand scheme of things. What I will tell you is that my book is the story or series of stories as to what I experienced in the search for my roots. What I found were trials and tribulations and the struggle that my ancestors made in order to overcome them. I also found strength and admiration for those who had passed before me and something in the form of self-discovery as to why I am able to enjoy what I have today based upon my ancestor's sacrifices. Interwoven within my stories are a series of poems that I have written to support the theme of each story. Also included are a series of photographs that reflect on the past as well as the present. So, if you should happen to read my book on the web, I can now tell you that a printed copy is now available if you should want one. Either way, I hope that you will enjoy my book. God bless, Tom Crane
The Scranton Times; Friday, January 9, 1914 PATRICK M’GUIRE, PIONEER, DEAD He Was a School Controller in Providence Township [aka North Scranton, PA] Forty Years Ago. Patrick McGuire, 85 years old, one of the oldest pioneers in the city, died late last night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Patrick H. DAVITT, 508 Mary Street, North Scranton. Funeral services will be in Holy Rosary church, next Monday morning. Interment will be made in the Cathedral cemetery. Patrick MCGUIRE spent fifty years of his life in this city; practically all of it in North Scranton. Death came as a natural result of great age. By the old timers contemporaneous with him Mr. MCGUIRE was well known. He was active in politics and was one of the school directors in old Providence township forty years or more ago, when the board had five members. That was before the present Scranton school district was joined. Other members, all of whom are gone were: James O’MALLEY, Thomas SALTRY, who was an alderman; Patrick FOX, of Hollow street, and Patrick STANTON. Born in County Mayo, Ireland, Mr. MCGUIRE was one of fourteen children. He leaves eight children, thirty grandchildren and one great-grandchild, besides two brothers and two sisters. In the days when he came to the city Scranton was hardly on the map. Like many young men of sturdy heart and little of the world’s goods, Mr. MCGUIRE went into the mines, beginning at the Cayuga, where he worked all of his life, with the exception of a few years, when he took a chamber at the Storrs. He was one of the most widely known men in the mines and a first class craftsman and he worked until about five years ago, being a man of energy and grit. There were many exciting incidents in the community in the early days of Mr. MCGUIRE’s life here, and he always had a fund of interesting reminiscences to tell his children and grandchildren. Politics in those days were equally as thrilling, if not more so, though perhaps in a smaller way than now. The children are: Mrs. Davitt [Mary Ellen], Mrs. Patrick Moran [Catherine/Katie], Luke [aka Patrick or Denis], Michael, Thomas, and J.J. [John] McGuire. [Either Patrick, Jr. or Denis were omitted from this list of children -- Luke was the nickname for one of them; I forget which.] The brothers are Thomas and Michael, who live in the North End. The sisters are Mrs. Alice COSTELLO and Mrs. Mary SYLVIA, of New Bedford, Mass. -------- Patrick MCGUIRE is my great-great-grandfather. He came from a big family, so I’m sure there is somebody out there that connects -- I would love to hear from you. Take care, Jamie O’Brien

Jeff, I think we are saying the same thing. Think of your mother's 1st cousin X. X is your 1st cousin, once removed. X's child is your 2nd cousin. Your children and children of your 1st cousin are 2nd cousins. Same great grandparents Your grandchildren and grandchildren of you 1st cousin are 3rd cousins. Same great grandparents. Your grandchildren and your 1st cousin are still 1st cousins, but 2 generations removed. 1st cousins stay in the 1st cousin line but you have to throw in the generations removed thing.
