    3. My Father Thomas Cometa was born in the Dunmore Foundling Home in Pa. May 23, 1920, my Father was adopted by Andrew Swift and Helena Masters Swift. His parents were Thomas Cometa age 32 and Alice Barrett 27 from Scranton. Alice parents were Byran Barrett and Mary Maloney Barrett. The father Thomas Cometa would work in the Pittston Pa coal mine and then go back up to Rochester Monroe Co. New York where he was already married and had a family. Any help on the Barrett/Cometa line would be great thanks. Sandy

    2. I like the idea of a "Roll Call" Yes, some postings are long and tedious but then I have a "delete" button so it doesn't matter that much to me. On the other hand, there I sometimes discover people researching lines of famalies which have married into my LANCE - LANTZ people...now, how's that for a subtle lead -in? Cheers to all from a very hot Seattle Laurence Lance

    3. I don't think it is disallowed. Of course, we are supposed to stay on-topic, but as long as it doesn't happen too often, I guess a roll call is okay. By the way, I am transitioning the Lackawanna site to another coordinator, and this should be completed in the next week or so. Of course, I will stay on the list as a member after the transition. -steve [email protected] wrote: >*This message was transferred with a trial version of CommuniGate(tm) Pro* >I like the idea of a "Roll Call" > >Yes, some postings are long and tedious but then I have a "delete" button so >it doesn't matter that much to me. > >On the other hand, there I sometimes discover people researching lines of >famalies which have married into my LANCE - LANTZ people...now, how's that for a > subtle lead -in? > >Cheers to all from a very hot Seattle >Laurence Lance > > >==== PALACKAW Mailing List ==== >Pennsylvania USGenWeb site for other county pages & lists http://www.usgenweb.org/pa >To unsubscribe: http://www.rootsweb.com/~palackaw/mailist.html#unsubscribe > > > >

    3. Please, as one who has been on many lists for a number of years, I must say I do not like the use of a ROLL CALL, which some lists discourage. Too many people post a long list of only surnames, with no other information, which is not the most efficient use of time or space. I would hope that any request to enliven the list would stress that sufficient information be given about any individual listed in the query - full name, any known or possible dates, known or possible spouse, known or possible children. Not only do you tell fellow listers what you already know, but you narrow down time periods and possible references to check. The more information you provide, the better your chances of getting someone to answer your query with meaningful information. 3. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, June 27, 2005 9:38 AM Subject: Re: [PA-LAC] Re: PALACKAW-D Digest V05 #88 Hi Ruth, Thanks for the additional info on the Richards family. Such details often make all the difference in the world, as in this case, as I believe it has allowed me to discover Gwen's mother and father and brothers and sisters. More about that later. First, I was able to identify Gwen McCloskey and her children living on Keyser Ave in Scranton, as follows: 1930 Census, 117 S. Keyser Avenue, Scranton, Lackawanna Co., Pa. McCloskey, Gwendolyn, Head, 46, WD, Wales McCloskey, Earl, Son, 26, PA, Laborer, Coal Miner McCloskey, Ruth, Dau, 19, PA, Bobbin Filler, Silk Mill McCloskey, Margaret, Dau, 17, PA, Bobbin Filler, Silk Mill McCloskey, Evan, Son, 16, PA, Bobbin Boy, Silk Mill McCloskey, Carrie, Dau, 14, PA McCloskey, Mary, Dau, 11, PA McCloskey, Mildred, Dau, 9, PA As you can see, Frank McCloskey had died by 1930. I skipped over 1920 and went to the 1910 census, where I found Frank and Gwen living on Frink Street, as follows: 1910 Census, Scranton, Lackawanna Co., Pa. McClusky, Frank, Head, 31, M7, PA, Miner, Coal Mines McClusky, Gieswyn?, Wife, 26, M7, 3/3, Wales, 1886 McClusky, Earl, Son, 6, PA McClusky, Minnie, Son, 4, PA McClusky, Ruth, Son, 2, PA Some good bits of information here. First, the returns tell us that in 1910 Frank and Gwen had been married for 7 years, and that Gwen emigrated to America in 1886. The latter piece of information is especially important because by emigrating in 1886, Gwen would not be present in the 1891 census of Wales, but should be present in the 1900 U.S. census. Sure enough, I was able to locate Gwen and her family in the 1900 census of Scranton, living on 16th Street, as follows: 1900 Census, No. 307 16th Street, Scranton, Lackawanna Co., Pa. Richards, Evan, Head, Mar 1848, 43, M20, Wales, 1888, Mine Laborer Richards, Mary, Wife, Nov 1846, 48, M20, 7/8, Wales, 1889 Richards, Alice A., Dau, Nov, 1882, 17, Wales, 1889, Silk Mill Worker Richards, Gwenllian, Dau, Mary 1883, 16, Wales, Silk Mill Worker Richards, Abraham, Son, Oct 1891, 8, PA, at School Richards, Evan Jr., Son, Jan? 1895, 5, PA, at School Richards, Viola, Dau, Aug 1896, 3, PA Richards, Margaret?, Dau, Mar or May 1888, 2, PA Here's Gwen's mother Mary that you mentioned, along with most of the other children who you indicated you thought were her brothers and sisters. As you can see, her father's name was Evan Richards, and he stated that he emigrated in 1888, while the rest of the family emigrated a year later, a very typical scenario. I wouldn't get too hung up on the fact that in 1910 Gwen states that she emigrated in 1886, as stated emigration dates tend to vary widely between census years. Although I was unable to find the emigration record of Evan, I was able to find the emigration record for Mary and her children. The family arrived in New York from Liverpool on 18 Oct 1888, on board the ship Gallia. Here's how Mary and her children appear on the ship's passenger lists. Mary Richards, 31, Wife Mary Richards, 8, Child Alice Richards, 6, Child Gwen Richards, 4, Child With this record we learn that Gwen had an older sister Mary, born ca. 1880 in Wales, who does not appear with the family in the 1900 census. Here's the film number and other info from the ship's passenger lists. Arrival Date: 18 Oct 1888 Gender: Female Port of Departure: Liverpool, England and Queenstown, Ireland Destination: United States of America Ship Name: Gallia Port of Arrival: New York Nativity: Liverpool, England Line: 36 Microfilm Roll: 526 List Number: 1424 Now, with this information one might expect to be able to find the newly-married Evan and Mary (Evans?) and their baby daughter Mary in the 1881 census of Wales, however I failed to do so. I did, however find the following marriage record for an Evan Richards that MIGHT, be Gwen's father. Name: RICHARDS, Evan Record Type: Marriages Quarter: March Year: 1880 District: Bedwelty County: Monmouthshire Volume: 11a This record indicates that there was a Mary Evans listed on the same page, so it's possible that this Evan Richards married Mary Evans, however you would have to order the full certificate in order to tell. I hope some of this information has helped to add to the knowledge of your family, and please let me know if you think I can be of any additional assistance. Sincerely, Jeff Thomas

I checked my records, and the siblings of Gwen were: Abram Richards Viola Richards Margaret Richards Alice Richards Evan Richards Mary Elizabeth Richards The only dates I have is for Gwen: Born March 9, 1883 in Wales Died 27 Feb. 1936 in Scranton, PA Her mother's name was Mary Evans. Just found that record. I can't begin to think of looking for a Mary Evans without a date or city! I don't have her father's first name. Ruth I don't know where Gwen fits in the age bracket of the other children, but I assume there would be a 10 yr. difference before or after. She married Frank McCloskey here in the U.S. but I don't have a marriage date either. All of her children ( I think ) were born in America, and the oldest one I have a year for is Earl McCloskey, December 9, 1903. He probably was not the oldest child, I don't think. I'm not at all sure that Breconshire is her true area. It was only one of a few born in 1883. Thanks
