Hi Everyone I joined this list only last week and already I've seen results! Thanks to Erik Samson I have found a little about Hannah Burdett, the granddaughter of my great-great aunt Miranda Burdett (born Cavill) and her husband Charles. Miranda and Charles, Miranda's brothers Walter and Fred Cavill (possibly also William), and their parents George and Sarah Cavill, all emigrated to Scranton / Taylor in the 1880s/90s. Some in-laws called Dimaline emigrated too. Is anyone else researching these names? Diana, Chicheter, West Sussex, England

Pertaining to the government limiting access to birth and death records, according to Cynthia Beaudette the person who wrote the article this is in relation to public law #108-458 the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004. In reviewing the public law which can be found on the internet, I found nothing in the law stating that they would limit access to birth and death certificates nor anything pertaining to them being renewed every 5 years. It did mention the matching of death certificates, SSN numbers to birth certificates and noting this on the birth certificates. As to the money, apparently states can apply to the federal government for grants in getting their systems up and running. Pacific Standard Time, [email protected] writes: > the new law will also require > birth certificates to be renewed every five years Are you sure this is not some sort of urban legend? The staff to renew birth certs would require huge local expenses. Where's the money to come from? Unfunded mandates on local government is illegal in most cases. If no funding is available, no law change will take place! Maybe this means that they want to pass the BC file up against the SS death records to flag BCs as deceased? Still requires big bucks as most BC's are not carried in automated records, and it would be huge effort to type an index of the past 70 years. Susan in San Jose, Ca ______________________________

Kind of makes it easier for me too as it's getting harder for me to see. Now, I presume you are new to searches as there isn't much to work with in your information. This may be all you know but at the least we can infer more and thus begin a search. Do you have living relations who may have a family bible? If you do talk to these people and keep notes on everything you do.Get family stories, photographs artifacts, including marriage, death and anything else you can get. A digital camera is excellent in that you can photograph all his stuff and get instant results. If you do not have a good genealogy program do get one. I use Family Tree Maker. Some swear by it, others swear at it. I'm sure there is better but it's what I use. What ever you use be sure to foot note and source EVERYTHING. If you do not do this, you will find yourself going over the same territory repeatedly, and only later remembering "Oh, I've done this before". I see you live in PA, which is where my LANTZ - LANCE people moved to between about 1810 and 1870. Are your people in PA, and if so where in PA? If not in PA, where did they live? Famalies tend to live in clusters so concentraite on these clusters and mine the information in that manner. From what you write, Fredrick b 1816 married Henrietta and had five children you know of and a number of daughters for which you have no given name. Let's begin with the most recent person and work backwards. We have a choice of William who died in 1950 or a Stermer who died in 1974. We can look at both but let's pick one to begin with at the moment. Do you know where William is buried? He lived about 78 years much of which was in the 20th century so my bet is we can find quite a bit about him. He will have an SSI as will most people after 1931. There will be tax records, probably, if you are just a bit lucky a Polk's directory which will tell you a lot about where he was living, what like of work he had, who his wife was and also list his children. 1950 wasn't all that long ago and it's likely the cemetery where he is buried is still in operation so you can get his burial information and also an obit listing who his children were. There are exceptions but many famielys stayed close to each other through great spans of time so from William it's likey you will find other members who live close to him. Find out what church or churches you family attended and see if there are records there. I'm missing a lot here, but get back to me if you have more questions. Cheers Laurence Lance Seattle
Hi, The island is still there, but a bit smaller. Its name is Dumb Man's Island. There was a book written about the island and its name. I will get the web address of the book since it has been put on the web. Just a few facts about the lake. I believe it is about 400 acres. and at its deepest place it is over 80 feet. Starting at the beach and heading towards the island the lake forms some what of a Y. To the right it opens up into another body of water called Mud Pond. I believe that name has been changed, but I do not know the new name. I can remember swimming from the beach to the island. It was 1/4 miles. At the outlet area of the lake was a town known as Jonestown. This was the original town. It is my understanding that when the railroad came to Lake Ariel this is why Lake Ariel was formed at the head of the lake. Chicken or egg, I do not know which occurred first. The formation of the town Lake Ariel or the coming of the railroad. Hi group, Looking for anyone who has information on these Krieger families. I am not sure if the relationships are correct. I know these individuals are related, however my information may be very incorrect as to the relationships. Krieger’s were in Bidwell Hill/Ledgedale, Wayne County from the early 1800’s to the late 1800’s. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Since I am legally blind I am restricted to search by snail mail and the internet. Yes, it's true, Spanish Flu is a variety of swine flu, per DNA analysis, science, not politics. Apparently there is a path of transmission from birds through swine to humans for this broad category of flu. We've probably all had one version or another of swine flu. (or so the author says) Susan
Those Social Security Death Indexes are ba dime a dozen! Everybody and their brother has them! All genealogy sights either sell the CDs or make the use of the index free online! Putting the stop to that would be like stopping guns! Almost impossible!!
I did have another thought about the death certificate aspect of this nightmare. I bought, some years ago, a SS Death Index from a company that specializes in genealogical research materials. In my possession, I have hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of SS numbers. I use the index to find dates of death so I can look for obituaries or send for death certificates. I'm sure that I am not the only person in the country who possesses such dangerous contraband. It never occurred to me to use this index for anything other than for research. I'm wondering if the miniminds in government are aware of these CD's. The type of information that they are trying to withhold from honest researchers is readily available from many sources. Ancestry.com has more updated indices than the one I use. Should I expect someone in the garb of Darth Vader to appear at my door soon to collect this hazardous device? Nothing surprises me anymore. It appears to be another case of closing the barn door after the horse has fled. Quite typical of the political mind. Marybeth VW.
Concerning the Spanish Flu check these websites. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/influenza/ This PBS site includes a timeline of events http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_Flu http://www.stanford.edu/group/virus/uda/ http://www.ninthday.com/spanish_flu.htm The quote below comes from the website directly above. Gives all of us pause for thought "As Webster reminds〓 us, "All the genes of all influenza viruses in the world are being maintained in aquatic birds, and periodically they transmit to other species... The 1918 viruses are still being maintained in the bird reservoir. So even though these viruses are very ancient, they still have the capacity to evolve, to acquire new genes, new hosts. The potential is still there for the catastrophe of 1918 to happen again." All sites indicate Kansas as the initial site of the flu symptoms.
