I am researching the Shurtz/Shirtz family of Lewisburg, Mifflintown, Thompsontown and East Salem. David Shirtz/Shurtz/Shurts/Shirts was my gr-gr-grandfather. He was born on March 10, 1814 and died on June 17,1889. He was married to Matilda R. Moore about 1840 . They had the following children: John W. b. abt. 1837(?) and died August, 1852; Harriet, b. abt. 1841; Julian, b. abt. 1844; Mary E., b. abt. 1847; Samuel Evans, my gr-grandfather, b. 1851; and David Jr., b. abt. 1859. According to cemetery records, they also had a Sarah E. who was born October 1, 1841 and died November 21, 1843. Samuel married Sarah Crater abt. 1879. They had 10 children; 9 survived: Robert Oscar; W. Roscoe; Jasper, my grandfather; Dora; Alice; Carl; George W; J. Watson, whose twin survived only a few weeks; and Vesta. I have much information to share about Sarah's ancestors (Crater, Hostetler, Graybill), but nothing about David's. They might have been from Hunterdon County, NJ.
