Hello! Greetings from the beautiful Pacific Northwest! I'm seeking that elusive ancestor who has haunted me for years with his disappearing act! The following is all I have: DAVID BOAL (BOLE) B: 1739 Lancaster Co., (now Perry Co.) M: Susanna Thomson in 1769 (she was born in Scotland to John Thomson of Thompsontown), 7 children, Sarah, John, Nancy, Elizabeth, Thomas, William, Jane. David D: 11 Aug 1814 at age 75 Bur: Old Lock Cemetery, Thompsontown, (now Juniata Co.,) Pa. Served in several capacities in the Rev. War. In a trip to Carlisle in 1994, found in the 3rd and 5th Series, Pennsylvania Archives, Vols. 6 & 23 the following: Captain John Hamilton's Company, Company of Cumberland County Militia Commanded by Colonel Arthur Buchanan, in service for 2 months and 2 days from 20th Jan to 30th Mar 1778, PRIVATE DAVID BOLE. Muster Rol of CAPTAIN DAVID BOLE'S Company,m Second Company, Seventh Battalion of Cumberland Co., Militia, Commanded by Col. Purdy, May 1780. (Also lists other surnames of mine: PFOUTS, WILT, CARGILL, REED) Marching Roll of Captain George Heay's Company of the seventh Battalion, Class Third, 1780 CAPTAIN BOLE'S COMPANY. CAPTAIN DAVID BOAL'S (spelling change) PAY ROLL FROM JUNE 22ND TO AUG 29TH, 1782 INCLUDING FOUR DAYS FOR MARCHING HOME IS 2 MONTHS, 7 DAYS. Return of the Marched Men of Captain Hugh McAlister's Company of the Second Class of the Seventh Battalion of Cumberland Co., Militia, commanded by Col James Purdy, Aug. 24 1782 CAPTAIN DAVID BOAL'S COMPANY Mifflin Co., was formed in 1789 from Cumberland & Northumberland Counties. Here we find an Agnes BOAL married to John Foster Wilson, both born about 1800. of their children there is a DAVID BOAL, CAPTAIN IN THE UNITED STATES ARMY at Fort Missoula, Mont. Later, it is noted that a CAPT. JOHN BOAL was killed March 16 1865 at Averysboro, N.C. 5 years after the death of my DAVID BOAL. This information has been found in the HUNTINGDON, MIFFLIN, JUNIATA AND PERRY COUNTIES text. That's it. During my 1994 trip, I scoured Boalsburg with a fine-tooth comb and found no connection to my David. I KNOW there is one but haven't yet found it. In the brochure on the Boal Mansion it states: one DAVID BOAL EMIGRATED FROM NORTHERN IRELAND TO THE NORTH AMERICAN COLONIES, SERVED IN THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR AND EVENTUALLY SETTLED ON A TRACT OF LAND IN PA. IN WHAT IS NOW CENTRE COUNTY. IN 1789 HE HAD A SMALL STONE DWELLING CONSTRUCTED FOR HIM. His son, David, built an extensive addition to his father's house in 1798 became a citizen of local note, and was honored posthumously when the village nearby was named BOALSBURG. Have written for Pension and war records for Capt. David Boal (Bole) and was told none existed. Now what? HELP!!!!! Joyce

Recently wrote to Mifflin County Historical Society to see if they had a Will for Thomas Woodward born 1759 in either Juniatta or Mifflin County. He was married to Polly Montirth (no dates). He died in either Mifflin or Juniatta County, but I don't have a date. He was the son of James Woodward born 1737 and wife Sarah Alice Thornborough. James also died in either Juniatta or Mifflin County. Mifflin County did not have a Will for Thomas. Does anyone know where to write or call for Wills in Juniatta County. Tim

One signed his name Kunkle and the other, > Kunkel. //////////////////////////////////////////////// I have a similar 1841 court document signed in Port Royal, Juniata Co. PA wherein the father appears to sign his name John C. Kunkle and his son appears to sign the same document John C. Kunkel, Jr. Precision in spelling names was not as important in those days as it is now, and variant spellings within families and within clans is not at all uncommon. A fact not well known is that English law permitted a person to change their name legally without recourse to court action, and the new name became established by "custom and usage." English law applied in the Colonies and many English practices, including those for names, continued to be legal in the United States for decades after the end of the Revolution in 1783. For example, my 4th great-grandfather purchased a farm in Juniata Co. in 1802 for "pounds sterling," and at the same time he changed his surname from ZULAUF to SULOUFF simply by "custom and usage." It was his daughter, Mary Zulauf>Sulouff, who wed John C. Kunkle and who was the mother of John C. Kunkel, Jr. Nelson R. Sulouff

You can depend on that general rule. If you have names for the children born to Gottfried and Magdalena (FRÖLICH) THOMAS in Lancaster Co. between 1778-1800, would you kindly share those names? I find that if a trail in Berks, Lancaster or York Co. disappears in that era it pays to look for the missing people in Juniata Co. PA. That was a major destination for western migration in the late 18th C. and early 19th C. Four Thomas names appear on gravestones in the oldest Lutheran cemetery in Juniata Co.: Elton C.; Mae W.; Mordecai d. 3/5/1851 at 73 yrs; and Alexander M. Additionally, in the same cemetery is a grave for Eve Thomas born 28 May 1794 (location unknown) and died 28 Mar 1868 in Port Royal, Juniata Co. She was married to Jacob Zulauf>Suloff, born 24 Nov 1783 in Brecknock or Robeson Twp., Berks Co. and died Milford Twp., Juniata Co. 16 Apr 1849. I have 99 descendants for Eve Thomas and Jacob Zulauf>Suloff and would like to exchange my information for ancestors of Eve. I am searching for the parents of Eve Thomas b. 28 May 1794, and her birthplace was very likely either Lancaster, Berks, or York Co. It is possible that Eve is a nickname rather than a name given at birth, because her husband refers to her in writing as "My Eve," which could simply be another way of saying "My Wife." Any help will be deeply appreciated. Nelson R. Sulouff

Port Royal was incorporated 4 Apr 1843. Locally the town continued to be called Perryville for many years afterward. I have a copy of a marriage certificate for a distant cousin, David M. Sulauf who married Sidney Kepner, which is dated 25 Oct 1853 and which states they were married in Perryville, ten years after it became Port Royal. Your census notation, 17 years after Port Royal was incorporated, is simply another example of how slowly changes were accepted locally. Nelson
On an 1860 census there is a notation for Perryville. Does anyone know where this is? Audrey Sizelove 1001-812@msn.com

Hello Nancy, Thank you for your message about your information on the Kepners of Juniata County PA. I am sure it contains material which will be helpful. I am not qualified to comment on the Kepner issues raised in your E-mail because I have not done original research on them. I have seen some of the secondary sources which you cite and I have seen other secondary sources which contradict them. A lot confusion of names and mistaken identities are involved in what has been written, and a lot of work remains to be done to sort out the early history of the Kepner families in Juniata Co. I have, however, done careful, original research on the persons you list as "Sydney Kepner and David Souloff," and I will respond to those portions of your message. You ask me to cite sources, so I will try to do that. You wrote: > c. Sydney Kepner. She was born about 1835. She married David Souloff > and may have lived in Akron, Ohio. The 1860 U.S. Census of Juniata Co., > Turbett Twp., p. 817, shows this family. David Suloff was age 30, a > mason, with real estate valued at $100 and personal property of $100, > born in Pa. Sidney M. was age 25, born in Pa. I have read the same accounts as you which state that Sidney's parents, David Kepner and Catharine Kepner, were cousins. The family Bible records held by Sidney's grandson, Paul David Suloff, copies of which I hold, show Sidney was born in May 1834. According to her certificate of marriage dated 23 Jan 1896 (copy in my possession), Sidney Kepner used the male spelling for her name. Her husband was David M. Suloff. He used that spelling in his adult years, though his marriage certificate spells his surname Sulauf and his father's baptismal Taufshein (copy in my possession) spells his father's surname as Sulouff. The same Taufshein spells David's grandfather's name as Johannes Zulauf, though he changed that spelling about 1802 and the Sulouff spelling is on his gravestone in Old Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal. David was a stone mason at the time he entered Civil War service and afterward, but he and a son began building wagons and this occupied the majority of his working time in civilian life after the war. Sidney and David lived on a small farm, the second place on the left after crossing the Tuscarora bridge into present-day Turbett Twp., coming from Port Royal. I have a copy of a picture of them standing outside the back of that farmhouse. They sold that farm in 1883 (Port Royal TIMES notice of sale held 10 November 1883) and moved to Akron, Ohio. Sidney and David Suloff, their adult children, and the spouse of daughter, Nancy, (see list below) all migrated from Juniata Co. to Akron Ohio at the same time. In Akron David went to work in the shops of Empire Reapers Co., while their sons entered the burgeoning rubber industry. I have a copy of a picture of Sidney and David standing in front of their 2-1/2-story white frame home at 108 Falor Street, Akron, taken sometime before the death of David on 4 Apr 1900. Sidney lived at the same location in 1916 when she applied for widows pension based on her husbands military service and disability from the Civil War. Sidney was receiving $30 per month from her widow's pension at the date of death, which occurred 19 Apr 1926 at age 92. Sidney was then residing at 767 Boulevard St., Akron OH. Both Sidney and her husband are buried in Akron, Summit Co., Ohio. The obituary of Sidney's husband mentions that his survivors included his wife, nee Sidney Kepner, sister of Lemuel Kepner of Turbett Twp., Juniata Co. This is found in the Alice K. Reinders Scrapbook, p. 5, which is preserved in the archives of the Juniata Co. Historical Society (JCHS). A more replete picture of Sidney Kepner's family is found in the JCHS FLICKINGER FAMILY HISTORY, pp. 742-744, which includes the following: Sidney's oldest brother was Lemuel Kepner (1837-1911), farmer at Port Royal, m.
