Hi Listers: The following was forwarded to me by the Coordinator of the Cambria Co. List. This is quite informative and I felt it should be passed on to other lists. Enjoy... Donna Heller Zinn ============================================================ Here is a lengthy message submitted on another list by Linda Hass Davenport. I am repeating it here as it contains useful information for those searching for information on WW I ancestors. LINDA"S MESSAGE FOLLOWS: Good Morning everyone: I played hooky from work yesterday and spent the day at the NARA Branch in Atlanta and it jogged my memory to pass on some information to everyone. Prior to the US's entry into WW1 (approx. 1917-1918) every male between the age of 18 and 40 was required to register for the draft. The information found on the card was provided by the individual himself. The registration cards vary in information depending on the individual draft board. But by and large the cards include: The full name of the person (this means first, full middle name, any additional middle names and last name); the current address of the man; his age; his birthdate (some include his place of birth); whether he is a US citizen or a naturalized citizen (some ask if his father was a naturalized citizen and his father's race); his race; his occupation; where he is employed (name of employer); address or location of employment; name and address of his next of kin; some cards ask if the man is married or single and how many people he supports. The card is signed by the draftee. On the back of the card his physical description is noted: Height is broken down by short, medium, tall although some cards give the actual height in feet and inches; Build by slim, medium, stout although some cards list actual weight along with the build; color of eyes and hair; any deformities or injuries are listed (such as one arm missing, blind in one eye, etc); the name and address of the draft board and the date. When these original cards were transferred to the East Pointe NARA branch the LDS spent about 3 years microfilming these cards. There are hundreds and hundreds of boxes and the LDS opened one box at a time and filmed them - in state order. However, within each state the cards were filed by draft board, not by county or by draftee. This makes the searching of the microfilm difficult to say the least. The good news is that the Friends of the National Archives took each box after it was filmed (and checked) and sorted all of these thousands and thousands of cards into - state and then COUNTY order and then in alphabetical order by surname and put then in new boxes. The Friends deserve all the kudos we can give them for this monstrous task. So ... rather than spending hours and hours searching the LDS microfilm you can order copies of the original cards from NARA. if you know the county your ancestor lived in between 1917-1918. And by the way - Ancestry.com > http://www.ancestry.com/ < lists WW1 Draft cards in their searchable data bases, however I know for a fact that there are 22 cards for the surname WHITE found in McIntosh Co, OK and Ancestry only gave me 4 of them so don't depend on that site. I was told yesterday that some reps from Ancestry had visited the archives a couple of weeks ago to talk about filming the cards, took one look at the hundreds and hundreds of boxes and simply left. For copies: Send a letter requesting copy(s) to: NARA Southeast Region 1557 St. Joseph Ave East Point, GA 30344 In your letter be sure to say you want copy(s) of the WWI Draft application Cards Include the name of your ancestor and his race, the state and the county. If you want copies of ALL of the cards with a given surname, ask them the cost of the copies and send a SASE for them to let you know the copying cost. In your letter be sure and say you want a copy of the FRONT and BACK of the card. Be sure to send a SASE for the return of you copies. The cost for the copy is 50 cents - 25 cents for the back and 25 cents for the front. If you only want one copy send a buck and say the difference is to be given to the Friends of the Archives, because after all they did all this wonderful hard work for you <VBG> If you have any other questions about the cards please write to me and I'll try to help. I've been "delving" into these cards for the past few years. But PLEASE don't ask me to get the copies for you. It is difficult for me to take the time off from work to visit the archive to do my own research <g>. And feel free to pass this on to any of the lists you are on. REIGLE Family Surname: REIGLE, MILLER, RICHARDSON, DALRYMPLE, TAYLOR, FULTON Searching for the parents and siblings or further information on George REIGLE (aka RIEGEL, REIGLES, etc.). George was b.ca.1787. He was md. to a Margaret _____ (b.ca.1797) and had at least one son, George (b.1814)[info from 1860 Juniata Co., Lack Twp. Pennsylvania Census]. George purchased ground on 19-Dec-1855 in Lack Twp., Juniata Co., PA. from James Lauthers (of Lack Twp.). At that time George was listed as "of" West Beaver Twp., Union Co., PA. [I presume that it should say "Snyder Co." as Snyder was formed from Union in March 1855??.] I feel that George had a sister, Mary Jane who was married to David Miller and resided near him in 1860 in Lack Twp., Juniata Co.. I also think that he had a brother, Samuel who bought ground in Juniata Co. together with George from Joseph and Catherine (Miller) Richardson. [note: Catherine is a daughter of David and Mary Jane (Reigle) Miller.] George and wife, Margaret later sold the above mentioned ground to a Jacob Felmlee of Tell Twp., Huntingdon Co., PA. on 1-Apr-1865. Can someone provide information or point me in the right direction?! Thank you in advance... Donna Heller Zinn

Hello. Donna, this may be no relationship to your query, but one of my family's names is Miller. From Lack Twp, Juniata Co. However, I don't know of your Reigle name. I have just started working on the geneology of this side of my family, so the information I have is sketchy. The earliest Miller I have is Benjamin Franklin Miller married to Amelia Baker (daughter of Peter and Polly Baker). I don't know the dates of their birth, death, or marriage, but their first child (Susan/Suzanne) was born circa 1834. They also had Daniel, twins Lewis and Samuel (my ancestor) b. 1842, Mary Jane and Dervin. After Amelia Baker died, B. F. Miller married again - to Sarah Bruner (1850ish) and had 5 more children: Jacob, Benjamin Franklin, Delilah 'Elizabeth', Annie and Rebecca. Do you think that this could be part of the same family that you are researching? -Darlene Darlene Guyer Corrigan corrigan@redrose.net
I am searching for information on Mary Jane REIGLE [RIEGEL, etc]. She was born about 1799 in Pennsylvania [from census info and Civil War Pension Records]. She died 26-Jan-1877 in Peru Mills, Lack Twp., Juniata Co., PA. [from Civil War Pension Records]. She was married on 24-May-1818 in Union Co., PA. [from Civil War Pension Records] to David Miller. David was born in 1797 and died of "Angina Pectoral at the age of 71 years" on 21-Feb-1868 in Juniata Co., PA. [from Civil War Pension Records]. I have never been able to find any documentation as to where these are buried??!!! Or have I ever found any documentation as to who their parents/siblings are??!!! Between the years 1850 and 1860 David and Mary Reigle Miller and their family moved from Fannet Twp., Franklin Co., PA. to Lack Twp., Juniata Co., PA.. I found two possible brothers for Mary Jane Reigle. Their names were found on a deed for ground in Lack Twp., Juniata Co., PA. owned by Joseph and Catherine Miller [d/o David and Mary Jane Reigle Miller] Richardson and sold to George and Samuel M. Reigle "of Snyder Co., PA." in 1856. I found a George Reigles age 73 yrs., farmer RE$3000 PE$1500 and born in PA. with his wife, Margaret age 63 yrs. and a son, George age 46 yrs. on the 1860 Juniata Co., PA. Census in Lack Twp., pg. 630 taken on 17-July (Post Office - Pleasant View). There was also several other Reigles listed as separate households and they are probably children of George: Jacob L. age 23 yrs. and family - and - Daniel age 30 yrs. and family. These Reigles were living in the same area as David and Mary Jane Reigle Miller. I hope someone can help me with this quest?!!! Thanks in advance... Donna
Donna, I have some information on surname Riegel/Reigle...families of Dauphin, Northumberland, Snyder, Perry, and Juniata County. Who are you looking for? Jonathan Wert at: www.mdi-wert.com
Dear Donna, This is not very much help, but it is all I've got! My grandmother was born in 1900 in New Bloomfield, Perry Co PA. I have photographs of her and her pals in the early teens. One of her friends was named Henry Riegel. He may have been a few years older than her, I just don't know. Maybe you should check Perry County, as it is right next to Juniata, for the Reigel family. Good Luck, Anne
