The question of reason for migration was the original issue. Both Eileen and Mac have pointed out the uselessness of asking the list this question in reference to a specific ancestor, though wanting to know why people in general migrated to an area seems valid. Enter Mac and his anecdote re the issue. His point was valid, i.e. people migrant for any one of a zillion reasons. The only public objection to his story was from the list administrator who said it was not geneological, then proceeded to tell her own, albeit much shorter, story. Note that this objection was public. Mac then objected publicly in response, which I'm afraid seems only right. If the administrator wants to correct privately then the response should be private, but one cannot expect a public rebuke to be acceptable then deny the rebuked one the right to respond publicly. People, people, people!!!! This list hasn't averaged 2 e-mails a day for the last year and a half!!! To be honest, my Jefferson County line is virtually done, but I subscribed to this list to learn something about Jefferson County and maybe pick up a few odds and ends. Do you know what I've gotten in all this time? A referral to Pat Steele (and G-d bless her!!), which I could have gotten from my local library. If I had had to bet, I would have guessed that there were no more than a few subscribers and was surprised from the roll call to learn how many people are on this list. So, folks, we've got what? 50? 100? people subscribed and we can go weeks without a single message. I'm on a bunch of lists and nothing compares to this lack of involvement. Then someone tries to perk things up and we're going to start quibbling over what is geneology? Good grief!! Could this be any more ridiculous? Alice is nice enough to give her time but can't shut someone else up and then talk about the same thing. Sorry, but she's an administrator, not the queen. And if she thinks clipping and saving obits about people who are connected to no one is more interesting than "stories" then what can I say? As for the obits, Deb is pretty amazing to have the time to access the Internet 18 separate times in one day to post obits about strangers instead of posting one list of names and waiting to hear from people who need them. And was that tirade geneological? What's up with the "Who's with me" Che Guevarra? NOW, here's a free offer (and a geneological topic, though not about Jefferson County): My main research work is in Philly. I'm currently going through death indexes from 1887-1889. The surnames are clumped by 1st letter, though not alphabetical. You find the surname, first name, and a page number. Then you need the microfilms for the actual death registrations and you look up the page, then the name. The info given includes age, date of death, cause, parents (if a child), address, cemetery. If anyone would like a look-up in the index only, write to me off the list. Now let's play nice. Merle
