Rick and any others of the same mind set: Use your delete key! In my opinion it is the "roll calls" that generate the most useless messages. A surname without any other corresponding information is just clutter as many surnames are very, very common, however, I use my delete key and generally don't read any of them. Now, other information about surnames and families and exchanges are very necessary to the success of this and any other list. Much of the time there is more than just one person who is interested in the information. It all depends on what you are labelling "personal"queries and "personal" replies. The name of the game is "sharing" information. A suggestion to help to simplify the message reading process is to put the name and a very short description in the Subject header. Headers such as PAJEFFER-D Digest; looking for family; researching; new to list, etc. are non-productive. Please type surnames only in all caps. This makes them stand out to those who scan (not with a scanner) the messages, rather than reading each message in its entirety. Placing a surname such as Smith in the body of the message blends with all the other text. If I place the surname SMITH in all caps it stands out from the other text and the reader's eye is caught by the difference. And last, but not least, I don't understand why people sign up for a mail-list and then complain about the volume of mail in their mailbox. Genealogy is a reseach based hobby. Research is a time consuming task. One must sort through tons and tons of information to find scaps and tidbits. I've been doing genealogy for about 30 years and that's the way it is and that's the way it always has been. If you don't have the time, find a different hobby.
