Hello, I new to the list. I am looking for information on a John Hess who came to Jefferson County, PA sometime around 1820. He married a Sarah Smith the daughter of a Jacob & Barbara Ludwig Smith. John & Sarah were to have had 4 children; Jacob, Sarah E., Barbara Ann, and Mary. From the census records it looks like John might have died before 1840 because there was a Sarah Hess noted as the head of the household in 1840 and then in 1850 she was living with her parents. In 1860 she was listed as a widow. The family shows in the census for Young Twp. in 1840, Gaskill Twp. in 1850, and Winslow Twp in 1860. John was the son of John and Mary Brua Hess of Lancaster County of which I know a lot about with the exception of their son John. Does any one know where they might be buried? Dates of death for John, Sarah and what happened to their four children? Appreciate any help you can be. Thank you. Frank W.Hess Enola, PA

I have "Hess" in my line who come through marriage into my husband's "Best" line. I'd have to check further to see if they are among the ones you're looking for. I'm originally from Jefferson County (now living in Mifflin Co.) but I know the area very well "up there." If I can help, I will, since so many people on other boards have been so helpful to me. I checked my lines and so far do not have a John & Sarah Smith HESS there. Sorry. Perhaps you could contact the Historical Societies in Jefferson County in the area you think they lived. Brockway has a website at www.greatlite.com/bahs/ where you can check.
