I do not know what township this is in but here is another book you might want to look at. meg Indians of the Punxsutawney Area: by Frank Basile and the Punxsutawney Historical and Genealogical Society. There was a thriving town here way before Europeans showed up! This book tells the story. I asked the Jefferson County History Center about reference materials concerning the Native American residents of Pine Creek. And was told to consult: Wm. J. McKnight's history (1917) Kate M. Scott's History (1888) or the new Jefferson County, Pennsylvania: An Illustrated History, to be published this summer. All books available from the Jefferson County History Center jchc@alltel.net. Read this in today's newspaper: The VA has made it easier and faster to get answers about family history, old war buddies or a famous war hero. They put 3.2 MILLION records on the Web for veterans buried at 120 national cemeteries since the Civil War. It also has records for some state cemeteries and burials in Arlington National Cemetery since 1999. The site includes names, dates of birth and death, military service dates, service branch and rank if known, cemetery information, and grave location in the cemetery. The site is updated daily. It also hopes to add records for veterans whose families requested grave markers from the VA. Those markers may go to private cemeteries or cemeteries overseas. The site address is: www.cem.va.gov

I am new to the list and am in need of help with Punxsutaweny cemeteries, as I have just learned I have family who lived there. I will be traveling there in a few weeks and would like to visit the graves of these family members. This is what I know at this moment. Rev. Ephraim Miller was married to Mary Boone (great granddaughter of Samuel Boone - brother of Daniel Boone) on 13 Oct 1846 in Hillsboro, Montgomery Co, IL. His ministry took him to many locations and eventually brought the family back to PA where Rev. Ephraim was born. He died in Punxsutaweny, Jefferson Co, PA and is buried in Smicksburg, Indiana Co. I have much more information and am happy to share it with others. However, I am in need of knowing where some of his children died and are buried. This is what I know or am looking for. Daughter Sara A. was born abt 1849 in Ill and was dead by the time of Ephraim's death in 1899 Son William was born about 1851 in Ill and was living in Altoona in 1912 when Mary died and was still living there when his sister Alice Beck died in 1935. I am looking for his descendants Daughter Mary E. was born about 1853 in Ill and may have been dead by the time of Ephraim's death in 1899 Son John was born about 1855 in Ill and I do not know what happened to him Daugher Alice E. was born 7 Sep 1858 in Cedarville, Stephenson Co, IL and died on 21 Jun 1935 in DuBois, Clearfield Co, PA. She married Woods Beck and they are buried in Smicksburg. Her son Charles W. Beck b. 1884 in PA and possibly married Alverta E. after 1920 - living in Punxsutaweny, Jefferson Co, PA when his mother died in 1935. I am looking for his information and descendants. Son Walter B. Miller was born abt 1862 in Ill, and was living in Altoona in 1935 when his sister Alice died. I am looking for his burial location, probably in Altoona and for his descendants. Son Charles A. was born abt 1869 in IL and was living in Lafayette, Tippecanoe Co, IN in 1935 when his sister Alice died. I am looking for his descendants. Thank you for any help you can give me. meg
This is from the McDonald, Washington Co., PA "Outlook" of Sept. 1, 1900. I thought that someone on this list might find it useful. Tom's Run (now spelled Thoms Run) was a small village on Thoms Run Rd. which is located near Bridgeville, Allegheny Co., about 6 miles from McDonald. Sad Closing of the Week A little group of men in their mining clothes standing in the still, hot sun in front of a house on East Coal street this Saturday morning at nine o' clock told the home of the victims of one of these deplorable mine accidents which have at some time in the past fifteen years cast a shadow over nearly every family in town. The sultry morning afforded not the faintest breeze to stir the window shades behind which were a man, only 28 years old, dead, and she who has been a widow only these two hours, and their two-year-old child. John TILLON came from Punxsutawney to Tom's Run, and from Tom's Run to this place three months ago. His new acquaintances here speak in the highest terms of him. He drove a trip of cars in Laurel Hill, and a little before 7 o'clock he went to work. At half-past seven, when a mile underground, the car he was riding on jumped the track, and he hit his head against the roof. He died while they were carrying him out. It was an accident that no one could have forecast, and no carefulness on his part could have averted it. Deceased was a Catholic in faith, and Rev. Father BRENNEN will conduct the services. Tomorrow evening at Noblestown will be the interment.
Am looking for information on this Peter B Ostrander. Found him listed on a Jefferson County resource page in the 1820 cesus in Pine Creek as ?Shander? Peter B. Listed above him was Henry Nolf, and below him was Alexander Powers so I thought I might have found the Ostander family I'd been looking for in Jefferson County. Checked 1820 census records and found him listed as Peter B Ostander with 2 free white males between 26 - 45, 2 free white females under 10 and 1 free white female between 26 - 45. and 2 for manufacturing. Then in an unkown township in Jefferson County in the 1830 census with 1 male 5 - 10, 1 male 40 - 50, 1 female 5 -10. Am looking for the parents and siblings of Lydia Ostander Adams who was born in Jefferson County about 1820. Died Dec 10, 1845. m Samuel D Adams ? Daughters we know of are Anne Jane Adams Allshouse, and Catherine Adams Murray. Two others that died with her in 1845, one possibly named Amanda. There were supposed to be other children. We do not know their names. If Ben Norris (or Darla) could post her main Jefferson County surnames to the list, perhaps some of us could supply some of the missing pieces, even if we didn't realize we "knew" part of Darla KELLY's genealogy. I'd be glad to help if I could... --Carolyn Depp ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bev Morris" <bmom@rickadee.net> To: <PAJEFFER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, April 07, 2004 4:55 PM Subject: Computer Crash; HELP!!! > Dear Listers, > > I'm writing in behalf of Darla Kelly. Jerry, What exactly is the Hetrick book? I am interested in learning more about the book because I have an woman in my family that married into the Hetrick family.
