In PA, marriage licenses were mandated to be kept from the year 1885 to the present. They are still held in the county courthouse where the people applied for the license. But, they could thake that license to any county in the state and be married. It would still be registered in the county where they applied for the license. The state had a great idea when it mandated marriage, birth, and death records be kept in 1852. But for some reason, people really fought this and in some areas not many were kept. The practice was stopped in 1854. The LDS has all these records on microfilm and the originals are in Harrisburg, although it seems they won't always admit that they're there. The state mandated birth and death records be kept and are held at the county level for the years 1893 through 1905. Starting in January of 1906, the state started keeping the birth and death records. www.vitalrecs.com except for Erie, Scranton, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh ( I think). I know there are four places where birth and death records are held at a local level.
You got them. If I find anything I will let you know. The Smouse's are a brick wall though. I have some things but can't connect anything yet. I don't remember how far back it goes, but the Brockway RECORD newspaper has excellent marriage write-ups which you can obtain for $2.00 each. Check out www.greatLite.com/bahs and follow the instructions under "archives".
Since it appears that early marriage records (prior to abt. 1880) for Jefferson Co. were not kept by government agencies I'm hoping that possibly old church records may be stored somewhere. Is there a genealogical society for Jefferson Co., PA? Maybe they will know if old marriage records have been extracted from old church records and compiled somewhere or if copies of original old county church records have been archived anywhere. Thanks to everyone that so kindly responded. I really appreciate the help as I'm not familiar with researching in PA. The responses on this mailing list are Great.
It seems to me that marriage records in Pennsylvania officially started at the county level about 1875 or thereabouts. Before that, a person would have to search via church records. ----- Original Message ----- From: Sherry <genequeen@alltel.net> To: <PAJEFFER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, July 05, 2004 12:22 PM Subject: Re: Early Marriage Records (1830 - 1840ish) > There are no marriage records from that early of a time period in Jefferson > County, or any of the western PA county courthouses that I have been to. > You will have to check early newspapers and church records. > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Diane Kittle" <diane.kittle@voyager.net> > To: <PAJEFFER-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Monday, July 05, 2004 12:07 PM > Subject: Early Marriage Records (1830 - 1840ish) > > > > Are the early marriage records for Jefferson Co., PA available on-line > > anywhere? > > > > > >
There are no marriage records from that early of a time period in Jefferson County, or any of the western PA county courthouses that I have been to. You will have to check early newspapers and church records. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Diane Kittle" <diane.kittle@voyager.net> To: <PAJEFFER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, July 05, 2004 12:07 PM Subject: Early Marriage Records (1830 - 1840ish) > Are the early marriage records for Jefferson Co., PA available on-line > anywhere? > >

Thanks, everyone for the replies about writing to funeral homes, etc. It looks like I'll be keeping the postal service and Ma Bell in business for awhile! Since I'm a "newbie" to geneaology (I only have 5,000 names in my database!), shouldn't take too long :)
Peggy, In the late 1800's until at least 1931 they lived in an area called "North Freedom in Red Bank". Does this sound familiar? Many of the earlier generation were born in Indiana Co. I've found references in Wesley Robinson's chart (1931 - Provided by Tony Turk) to a Saltsburg location and what he labeled "Robinson", Indiana Co., PA - may have been a personal family reference to their location or maybe a town?, not sure. I found many of them listed as buried in a "Robinson" cemetery in Perry Township, Armstrong Co., PA in a book called Tombstone Hoppin by Patricia Steele. I haven't verified ALL the below info yet but have copies of most of the source material for a lot of it, i.e., tax, census, death, birth, pension, estate/wills, land/deed records, cemetery records, Tony Turk's family research, Wesley Robinson's family chart, Patricia Steele's "Tombstone Hoppin" books, etc., etc. A little more on this family: Emmett Robinson (My Grandfather) b. 1868 was the son of a John and Julia Thompson Robinson. His siblings were: John P. b. abt. 1866; Laura Mary b. 1870 m. (?) Cooper; James J. b. 1872; Robert b. 1874; Emma J. b. 1877 m. Ralph Weldon. Previous Generation: Emmett's father was a John J. Robinson b. abt. 1790 in Enniskillen, Fermanagh N. Ireland. John was a civil war veteran and died at abt. age 45 according to his pension file. He was the son of another John Robinson who married a Rebecca Yalton. John J b. in 1790's siblings were: William b. abt. 1813; Irwin b. abt. 1814 m. Mary Matter; Mary Ann b. abt. 1815 m. Ebeneezer Ferguson; Catherine b. 1820 m. Gilmore Montgomery; Jane b. abt. 1825 m. Joshua Farr; Elizabeth b. abt. 1827 m. David Shaffer; Rebecca b. 1829 m. James Ferguson, Susannah b. abt. 1830 m. John Ferguson; and Hance Elliot b. abt. 1834 m. Susan Reed. John J. b. abt. 1790 was the son of an Irwin Robinson b. abt. 1862 in Enniskillen, Fermanagh, N. Ireland. Irwin m. a Catharine Elliott and besides John had many children, i.e., George b. 1788 m Susanna Brinker; Jane b. 1793 m. John Long; Hance b. 1794 m. Helen Spears; Irwin b. 1796 m. Martha Armstrong and then Mary Cressman; Thomas b. 1798 m. Eliza (Susannah) Long; Mary b. abt. 1800 m. James Mccullough; James b. abt. 1806 m. Maria Steir; William b. abt. 1807 m. Caroline Talmadge, and Elliot b. 1808 m. 1st a Nixon, 2nd a Linn, and 3rd m. a Doty, Christopher b. abt 1812 m. Elizabeth Linn; Elizabeth b. 1819 m. Smith Lynn. Many of Irwin and Catharine's children were born in Indiana Co., PA. Emmett was my very mysterious Grandfather. It wasn't until after his death that we found where he had written in his youngest son's (died at age 15) funeral book his parents names and their addresses. He never married my Grandmother until he was 45 and never mentioned his family or life before her. My father never knew about his father's family until we started genealogical research in the 1980's. Emmett never mentioned he had sons by a previous marriage. I found out about them from his mother's estate settlement records whereas his sons by Jennette Kunselman signed their share of their Grandmother's (Julia A. Thompson Robinson) land in Armstrong Co., PA over to their uncle Robert who lived with and cared for her until her death. The records indicate that Wilbur Robinson and wife Maggie A. were residing in Clarion Co., PA in 1931 when Julia died and Oliver and wife Grace were in Allegheny Co., PA at that time. If any of this sounds familiar, please let me know. I'd really enjoy finding someone else linked to and/or researching this family. Thanks for the response Sonya. I also have a Peter Hallowell b. 16 Feb 1816 who married Rachel Jewart. She was born 16 Mar 1822. They were married 19 Feb 1846. At Macedonia, Illinois. Rachel is the daughter of Alexander and Jane Hickenlooper Jewart. Do I have this right according to your records? I just came back from a 10 day search in PA. Anything really far back wasn't on any record I looked at. Lillian
I have written to both funeral homes and cemeteries and have gotten good information about 95% of the time. Make sure you enclose a SASE with your request. Charlie
I am looking for the parents of Nancy Ann Smouse b. 30 June 1813 Indiana County, PA. She married Edward Hallowell. She died 13 October 1883 in Henderson Twp., Jefferson County, PA. So far I have not found her on any lists. Anyone have an idea where I might find her? She was too early for death records. Thanks for any help. Lillian
If you find anything, let me know. My Thomas Jewart married a Sophia Smouse and I have no info on who her parents or siblings were. Your Nancy may be a niece or great niece of hers. I have never called a place of business, but 2 funeral homes in Blairsville, PA were very cooperative and funeral homes in Punxsutawney very cooperative, Morningside cem in DuBois also excellent, they keep obit attached and will read it all. Also, public libraries in any city I have called will send obit, some ask for a dollar, others do it for free. Also, court houses for $5.00 will send copy of wills, marriages, divorces. It depends upon the funeral home. One of them gave me, at no charge, the death certificates, in New York State. Another, in Pennsylvania, gives nothing (they seem arrogant). ----- Original Message ----- From: Mona Anderson <rdqueen@webtv.net> To: <PAJEFFER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, July 02, 2004 6:29 AM Subject: Information Requests > Has anybody here ever written to a funeral home, cemetery or place > business for information on a deceased relative? Has anybody here ever written to a funeral home, cemetery or place business for information on a deceased relative? If so, were they helpful and what, if anything, did you receive? Was it worth it or can you find just as much on the internet and other places? Mona
I'm seeking any information on the following: Emmett Robinson was b. 16 MAR 1868 to John and Julia (Thompson) Robinson. On 27 DEC 1889 he married Jennett Kunselman. They had two children, i.e., Wilbur Robinson and Oliver Robinson and were apparently divorced by 1910 (as Emmett is back living with his widowed mother and listed in the census as divorced). He left PA, went to West Virginia where he married again and fathered 11 more children - 8 reached adulthood. I would like to find out what happened to the Wilbur and Oliver. If anyone has information on this family, please let me know. Thanks.
I would like to know if anyone on this list serve knows what the business was that occupied the building where Mahoning Hardware was and the building has been recently torn down to make room for Eckerd? I recently came across an old photo of a building that resembles the Mahoning Hardware building. Thanks for your help Jean
Am looking for my great great great grandmother Lydia Ostander b. Jefferson County Pa about 1820 died Dec 10, 1845 in Pittsburgh Pa. I found a transcription for a census for Pine Creek Jefferson County on a Jefferson County resource page in the 1820 cesus in Pine Creek. ?Shander? Peter B. Listed above him was Henry Nolf, and below him was Alexander Powers so I thought I might have found the Ostrander family I'd been looking for in Jefferson County. Checked 1820 census records and found him listed as Peter B Ostrander with 2 free white males between 26 - 45, 2 free white females under 10 and 1 free white female between 26 - 45. and 2 for manufacturing. Then found Peter B Ostrander in an unkown township in Jefferson County in the 1830 census with 1 male 5 - 10, 1 male 40 - 50, 1 female 5 -10. Also found PETER B OSTRANDER Company: 13 REG'T (FARRINGTON'S), NEW YORK MILITIA. Rank - Induction: PRIVATE Rank - Discharge: PRIVATE Roll Box: 157 Roll Exct: 602 National Archives and Records Administration. Index to the Compiled Military Service Records for the Volunteer Soldiers Who Served During the War of 1812 M602, 234 rolls. Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration. I don't know if this is the same Peter B Ostrander yet or not, and haven't found anything naming children. So haven't connected this to Lydia yet. What we know about Lydia is: Lydia married was to Samuel Douglas Adams who was born February 23, 1811 Indiana County Pa. 1811 - April 11, 1887 ? Two daughters names not known, died the same day as Lydia of small pox on Dec 10 1845. The three were originally buried in a Methodist burying ground which was moved when Union Station was built in Pittsburgh. Later may have been moved again when the station expanded. Many reburials went to Allegheny Cemetery. We may have found one of the daughters an Amanda Adams in Allegheny Cemetery Pittsburgh Allegheny County Pa. One daughter to survive nursing her mother and sisters was Anne Jane Adams Allshouse Born 11 Nov 1836 Indiana Pa. Married Jan 14, 1856 Finley Allshouse (1837 - 1901) Died April 12, 1923 in Johnson Hotel California Wahington County Pa. Phillipsburg Cemetery (Section B Row #14 Allshouse, Ann Jane 1836 - 1923 next to her husband Finley) Date of Burial was April 15, 1923 Undertaker James E Hines Address Coal Center Pa. There were supposed to be other siblings whose names we do not know as well. Another daughter Catherine E Adams Murray, I found her affidavits where Catherine signed for my great great grandmother Anne Jane Adams Allshouse to get her husband Finleys Civil War pension as his widow. Catherine stated in hers that she was Anne Janes sister. Catherine (Adams) Murray of Dellslow WVA, was married to Arthur Murray. Catherine married Arthur Murray in Fayette County Pa. They later moved to Dellslow WVA. Another researcher sent this census information on Arthur and Catherine. 1870 Census for Monongalia Co Morgan Twp 89-89 Farmer Arthur Murray 30 Wv all Mulatto Catherine 25 PaJames 11 Wv Sarah 8 Wv Martha J 5 Wv Isabel 3 Wv John 1 Wv Their daughter Isabel Murray married Ben Ison Hart.
