I've "rescued" an old photograph identified as Dessie SHIELDS which was taken at the E.C. Hall Studio in Brookville, Pennsylvania. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880's with Dessie looking to be about 2-3 years old at the time. Based on limited research I believe that this is a photograph of Dessie Isabelle SHIELDS b. 1886 in Brookville, Pennsylvania to parents William SHIELDS and Catherine PIFER. Dessie died 31 May 1889 (probably just after the time that this photograph was taken) and is buried in the Windy Hill Cemetery. Records indicate that the William & Catherine SHIELDS had 4 children including, Dessie Isabelle, John Lee, Henry Maxwell, and Catherine Princetta. All the children appear to have been born in Brookville, PA. William SHIELDS was b. 1859 at Beaver, PA to parents Daniel SHIELDS and Isabelle KELSO, married Catherine PIFER on 24 July 1886 in PA, and died in 1935. Catherine PIFER b. 25 July 1867 at Beaver, PA to parents Jonas S. PIFER and Rachel REED, died in 1965. I'm hoping to find someone from this family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to the care of family. If you are a member of this family or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
Thanks Kevin, I did email Nate, but with the hard disk crash and hacking of the past few weeks, I'm sure he is in over his head now. He will answer when he comes up for air, I'm sure. I have redrawn the map of the cemetery and printed it in a PDF file. I did a database of the lot holders and interred and printed a list of the lots, and a alpha sort by lot holders. I printed each in a PDF file 12 pages each in length. I'm sure when the dust settles, that we can get this info on the Jefferson County site. Meanwhile, I can do lookups for anyone interested. Easy to copy/paste from or download and peruse. If you are going to scan to an image file, recommend JPEG (.jpg) file. Again easy to view and/or download. Suggest you contact the Jefferson County web site administrator Nathan Zipfel at nzipfel@zoominternet.net<mailto:nzipfel@zoominternet.net> as I suspect he would be willing to host it there. Ask him what he thinks would be the best approach. It's probably the best place for it as many people gravitate to that site for Jefferson County info. Although I don't have any relations in that cemetery (that I know of at present) thanks for your willingness to share with others. Hi all, Sorry for the cross-posting but I needed to get this information out to all. PA-Roots.com the hosting server for the county websites has experienced a terrible 3 weeks. We're in the process of getting the county pages back up and running. Can someone please tell me where I can find any articles about John F. (Frances) Kelly, the longest living Civil War Veteran of Jefferson Co., PA? Someone at a genforum.genealogy.com message board mentioned that info could be found at Jefferson County GENWEB, but so far I have not located them. I believe he may have been a brother to my gr gr grandmother, Melissa "Jane" Kelly McCreary that died in New Castle, PA in 1915. In her obit it stated that she had a brother Mr. J. F. Kelly of Altoona, PA. Any help appreciated, Thank you, Shari McCreary Price

I would be interested in any Winslow or Dickinson names in that cemetery. I would also send it to the Jefferson Co, PA web site to be included in their cemetery page. Need information on George Washington and Mary Ann (Terwilliger) Dunkle. They were living in Heath Twp, Jefferson County in 1881. Hi Listers, Ran across these two items, under the HUMOR section of the latest edition of ROOTSWEB.com edition for Aug 25,2004. We have Dorothy Shillinglaw for the first and Grace in Alaska for the second. As the editor said "they speak for themselves" From: 1855 New York State Census, New York City, New York County, 7th Ward, 6th ED, Marriages and Deaths Schedule, under Remarks. [Editor's Note: And you wonder why your ancestors' names are spelled so creatively in the censuses?] "I should think one third of the Population of this District are in the Habit of moving from once to four times a year Rendering it Imposabell for the Marshel to Render an Ackret account of the Deaths that has taken plase In the District for the last year, the friends of Desist having moved to sum other Part of the city. I can find only the mariag of one cuppell in the District and they cleared out the next morning and haven't been heard from since." * * * State of Befuddlement Thanks to Grace in Alaska The doctor who saw my mother shortly after my birth put "Disorganized" in the township blank. The correct term is "Unorganized." This has amused many agencies requiring me to show my birth certificate. * * * Found a humorous entry in census, parish, church, etc. records? Send to: Editor-RWR@rootsweb.com I hope you didn't cringe as bad as I did. Best regards John Casey Fairbury Illinois
Hi Bev, I have checked but not sure if you meant that they were in PA or even born in PA. Also,, were they white? There are several Isiah Davis' who are black. Do you have birth years or estimates for the children? Nothing stands out yet. Susan E. Susan E.
Hi! Would someone please look in the Heritage Quest census index for Isiah DAVIS (born c1846); wife is Julia DAVIS (born c1850)? I'm having difficulty finding them using Ancestry.com and Genealogy.com census index and images. If you have access to Heritage Quest, you probably could e-mail me privately the image. They were in Knox Twp., Jefferson Co., in 1870 & 1880 with children John C., Mary B., Ida, and Myrtie. I'm especially interested in Mary B. (Belle?) DAVIS who may have been recently divorced in 1900 from Joseph F. OZMAN. It appears she went back to using her maiden surname. Also, would like to find her in 1900 & 1910 if she's not with her parents. I'd be grateful for any information. Thank you very much. Blessings, Bev in Calif.
