Deb, That would be soooo nice. The Broadheads came around 1832 to Philly, then moved west. The Shockeys were here in 1737 and lived along the Mason Dixon and spread, in this case (I think--or so others think) northwest from Somerset Co. My gggrandfather, John Valentine Shockey, lived near Curwensville, Clearfield Co., and his son Matthew H was a boarder with Mrs Hannah Broadhead, widow, and several children in the 1880 census. Just can't find much about the lines from Matthew back. Does the name Susanna Irvin ring a bell? Alice
I am researching primarily the surname Arthur (Arthurs) of Jefferson County, PA. A new name which recently came my way was that of the Rev. Robert "Bob" Arthurs who was born at or near Brookville, PA, but died in Elwood City, PA. He died sometime in the early 1970's and his father was said to have operated a gas station in the region. I received this on another list today and thought I would share it with all of you. Val D. Greenwood's book "The Researcher's Guide to American Genealogy" is suppose to be one of the greatest genealogy books on the market, and now it is online - all 660 pages of it! I understand mining was one factor, lumbering and perhaps farming another. And in the past I've noticed that at least some of those who moved west may have found incentive to "Go, West Young Man" because their creditors were getting a bit too close. I have a fair bit of info...not very well organized...on some of the families who went out to Jefferson, mostly Pennsylvania German names. BTW, I am looking for anything on the "Enty" surname and any related lines. --Ralph
