    1. Thank you
    2. First things first: Deb, I wanted to thank you for all the documents that you mailed me, free of charge I might add. I wish you would let me pay your for postage and copies. I received them yesterday and they are GREAT! You have been such a great help. I'm glad you posted the obituaries and marriage records, because if you hadn't I would not have found my great great grandparents. It was a brick wall for me. Thank you, and keep up the good work. Second: Alice, you are wonderful! I love your list. Everyone is such a great help as are you. Keep up the good work. And NO your not a queen, your a GODDESS for putting up with the likes of Mam6896 and Organizr01. And last but not least: The HECK (I won't say what I really want to) with Merle and Mac. They both are the type of people who think they should be in control of everything even if it means making up lies and stirring up trouble! In my opinion, they both need to be unsubed. from the list and banned. We don't need flamers on this or any list! Merle, Mac get a LIFE and leave the nice people on this list along. Also thank you to everyone else who have helped me when I had a question.

    1. On/Off topic--Who knows?
    2. The question of reason for migration was the original issue. Both Eileen and Mac have pointed out the uselessness of asking the list this question in reference to a specific ancestor, though wanting to know why people in general migrated to an area seems valid. Enter Mac and his anecdote re the issue. His point was valid, i.e. people migrant for any one of a zillion reasons. The only public objection to his story was from the list administrator who said it was not geneological, then proceeded to tell her own, albeit much shorter, story. Note that this objection was public. Mac then objected publicly in response, which I'm afraid seems only right. If the administrator wants to correct privately then the response should be private, but one cannot expect a public rebuke to be acceptable then deny the rebuked one the right to respond publicly. People, people, people!!!! This list hasn't averaged 2 e-mails a day for the last year and a half!!! To be honest, my Jefferson County line is virtually done, but I subscribed to this list to learn something about Jefferson County and maybe pick up a few odds and ends. Do you know what I've gotten in all this time? A referral to Pat Steele (and G-d bless her!!), which I could have gotten from my local library. If I had had to bet, I would have guessed that there were no more than a few subscribers and was surprised from the roll call to learn how many people are on this list. So, folks, we've got what? 50? 100? people subscribed and we can go weeks without a single message. I'm on a bunch of lists and nothing compares to this lack of involvement. Then someone tries to perk things up and we're going to start quibbling over what is geneology? Good grief!! Could this be any more ridiculous? Alice is nice enough to give her time but can't shut someone else up and then talk about the same thing. Sorry, but she's an administrator, not the queen. And if she thinks clipping and saving obits about people who are connected to no one is more interesting than "stories" then what can I say? As for the obits, Deb is pretty amazing to have the time to access the Internet 18 separate times in one day to post obits about strangers instead of posting one list of names and waiting to hear from people who need them. And was that tirade geneological? What's up with the "Who's with me" Che Guevarra? NOW, here's a free offer (and a geneological topic, though not about Jefferson County): My main research work is in Philly. I'm currently going through death indexes from 1887-1889. The surnames are clumped by 1st letter, though not alphabetical. You find the surname, first name, and a page number. Then you need the microfilms for the actual death registrations and you look up the page, then the name. The info given includes age, date of death, cause, parents (if a child), address, cemetery. If anyone would like a look-up in the index only, write to me off the list. Now let's play nice. Merle

    3. Hi Karen, Yes, the obits are being collected, and eventually will be added to the Obituary Query Board on the Jefferson County site. The board is located at: http://www.pa-roots.com/cgi-bin/data/jeffersonobit.cgi If you have any you'd like to add to the boards, please do so. 2. Eileen Irwin
    3. It seems that those who choose to respond to this thread are missing the entire point of the thread. They either jumped in in the middle or just have poor reading comprehension skills. The problem isn't/wasn't the obits, per se. Migration trends are genealogy (although the question "why did my particular ancestor migrate to a particular area is a rather useless question to ask people on a list. The answer remains with the migrant ancestor. Unless there are diaries or letters with the explanation, it is anybody's guess and that is exactly what it is.....a guess); historical events is genealogy; socio-economic conditions and trends is genealogy; source documentation is genealogy; obituaries are genealogy; legal records (deeds, wills, other court proceedings) are genealogy; even family stories are genealogy. The bottom line is that people complain about a subject when that subject does NOT pertain to them and their research. They never think twice about chatting repeatedly back and forth, on list, when the subject involves or interests them. I think that it is probably time to put this topic to bed. 1. Need 1900 Census Lookup
    2. Mark Allan Holt
    3. List, Is there a kind soul out there with the 1900 Jefferson Co, PA SK-Pub census CD on hand? I realize that the 1900 images are online, but they're pathetically small, and too difficult to read. SK-Pub has a good marketing ploy... they "donate" images that are just large enough to make out a few details, but too small to use effectively or reliably... obviously in attempt to entice you into purchasing the larger images on CD. Bravo. I need a lookup on page 78-15b (Rose Twp). I'm specifically interested in 2 families: The family of Frank Brocius starting on line 83, and the family of S. (?) Edwards beginning on line 91. If it's not too much trouble, could I get the following columns: Name Relationship Birth Month/Year Age TIA, Mark Holt.

    2. I am a descendant of Daniel Brewer (1763-1842); Samuel States (abt 1777-abt 1829) Searching for descendants of Archibald Hanna (abt 1740-1793) and his wife Margaret Brady. Believe Samuel States (above) married their youngest child (Hannah Hanna) and produced Archibald States (1800-1875). Mother probably died in childbirth as Samuel remarried. Other children of Archibald and Margaret were William, Hugh and May who married Robert Williams. Any information on these families would be welcome. Been searching the States side off and on for over 45 years and have data and thoughts to share. Jerilyn
