Hi all, with a huge thanks to Ben Anderson, the Beechwoods cemetery is now on-line. There is over 3200 folks buried in this cemetery. It was a huge undertaking for Ben and I appreciate it greatly! The direct URL is http://www.pa-roots.com/~jefferson/cemetery/beechwoods.html but you can always get to it from the Cemetery page. Enjoy! Any one know where I could get a photo of the poorhouse from the 1900 time frame? My gr. gr. grandfather, Valentine Mohney, was moved to the county home in Brookville when he was unable to care for himself. He died there in June 1909. Shortly after Valentine's death, a scandal was discovered at the county home. The superintendant, Mr. Smith, was reportedly accused of mistreating and committing bodily harm to the "inmates", and of allowing the home to be overrun with vermin. The Jefferson County Poorhouse has recently demolished after serving Jefferson County support officers in recent years. I visited the poor house back in the late 20s or early 30s when it was really the "poor house." JP
We would like to invite you to re-visit our website, The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com We just posted two wonderful picture postcards of the JEFFERSON County Poorhouse. But that is the only information we have on the page. It looks lonesome! Does anyone out there have any further information? DIRECTIONS: At the homepage (link above) click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then on PENNSYLVANIA on the table of states, then on JEFFERSON on the table of counties. You will see the pictures at the top of the page. (NOTE: If you have visited the site recently, you may have to click on REFRESH on your browser to see the new information.) There are other pages on the site which may give you some interesting perspective on poorhouses. They are off the homepage and include: the HISTORY page and the LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS as well as FEATURED ARTICLES. There are great tips for researching poorhouse records for yourself on the RECORDS page; and you might want to subscribe to our (almost) monthly newletter (which you can do in the lower right corner of the homepage). The information on our site will only grow through the submissions of generous readers. If you would like to e-mail me ... please do so off-list because I cannot maintain subscriptions to as many lists as we post messages on. (You can use an e-mail link off one of our web pages.) We hope you enjoy the site! Thanks, Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)

I'm interested in corresponding with anyone on the following family: Daniel and Elizabeth (Hines) Schucker--he died near Emericksville and they are buried in the Emericksville Cemetery. Children were as follows: Sarah Ann, Levi, Emanuel, Franklin, Joseph, E. Emma, Amanda, and Elizabeth.
Betty, Are you able to scan this photo of the Battle Hollow School and send it to me in an email? I may be able to show it to a few of longtime residents of the area. I am looking for the ancestors of Joseph Ray RAUGHT. b. 3 March 1875 in Corcica, Jefferson, PA d. 14 Jan 1961 in Bradford, McKean, PA buried in McKean Memorial Park Cemetery, Lafayette, McKean, PA m. 28 Jun 1899 in Brookville, Jefferson, PA Victoria Tabitha VAN TASSEL b. 28 Oct 1881 Gypsy, Jefferson, PA d. 12 Jan 1956 Smethport, McKean, PA buried with her husband She is the daughter of James Russell VAN TASSEL and Emma DYE He is the son of Joseph M. RAUGHT and Lydia LONG Joseph M. RAUGHT may be the son of a Henry RAUGHT, but that is just a guess from the 1850 Heath Twp, Jefferson Co., PA Census. Calculating the approximate date of birth from the census puts Joseph M. born in 1841 which means this Joseph in this census could be the father of Joseph Ray Raught. I know the information about Joseph Ray Raught and Victoria Tabitha Van Tassel is correct because I have copies of their death certificates and of the marriage license Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advanced, Becky Hakes [email protected]
Hi Paula. Have you checked the Leepers in Westmoreland Co. PA? They tie into the family from Lancaster PA area. I can check Kootnai Co. Idaho records for you if you'd like. Betty Rudolph Boise, Idaho
Hello, Can anyone heIp me find out if Margaret LEEPER my great-great-great-grandmother? I found my gg-grandfather, William Albert DAILEY, age 28, on the 1880 PA census in Snyder Township, Jefferson County, listed as brother to the head of household, Henry W. LEEPER, age 23 and Henry's wife, Catherine, age 18. William's first wife, Eleanor PENDLETON DAILEY, died earlier that year, and their daughter, Mary Etta DAILEY age 5, was living with her PENDLETON grandparents. I am assuming that William DAILEY's father, also William (born in Dublin), died sometime between 1853 and 1857 and his wife, Margaret GRENDER (GRINDER) DAILEY, must have married a LEEPER and had more children. Does anyone have information on Henry W. and Catherine LEEPER? I have found a Henry and Katie LEEPER in Kootenai County, Idaho on the 1910 census index, both born in PA. Could this be the same couple? I have found a Margaret LEEPER, 19 July 1833 to 22 Oct 1908, buried in EDEBURN Cemetery in Jefferson County, PA. I hope to find out if she is my ggg-grandmother. She is buried with John LEEPER 1812-1888, Berthina LEEPER 1869-1917 and Clarence LEEPER 1899-1920. In 1900, Margaret is living with her son John Leeper, age 27, sister Berthina , 24, and grandson Clarence, 2 mons. The next family is the EDDEBURNs, so the LEEPERs buried in the Edeburn cemetery must be the same ones. By 1910, I find John LEEPER living with sister, Gertrude, age 38, and nephew Clarence, age 10. Also in Jefferson County ,in 1910, I find a George LEEPER, age 40, wife Ollie, 33, daughter Bertha,7, son George,3, and daughter, Rosie. I don't know if they are any relation to the other LEEPERs. Back in 1860, on the census index, I found a LEEPER family in Heath Township,as follows: Henry, John, John W. , Margaret, Nancy Jane, and William. Could this William be my William DAILEY? He would have been only 7 years old at the time. I think it may be, since the previous dwelling is the LOWERS family, including Lawrence LOWERS , who also married one of Daniel PENDLETON's daughters( Lillian Eugenia) as did William DAILEY. L.D. LOWERS is buried in Wildwood cemetery , and listed on the PENDLETON Stone, along with William's first wife, Eleanor PENDLETON, and William and Eleanor's daughter, Minnie, who died in infancy. Also , in July of 1895, William DAILEY bought land that borders the PENDLETON property from L.D. and Lillian E. LOWERS, where he lived with his second wife, Almeda RICE, d/o William and Margery CHITTESTER RICE, and their children, Nora DAILEY BROWNLEY, Orlando DAILEY Beverly(male) DAILEY, Logan DAILEY, Mertie DAILEY WETMORE, Harry DAILEY, Mary DAILEY BLlLEY. William DAILEY and his family, all but my great-grandmother, Nora DAILEY BROWNLEY, moved ! to Colorado in 1905. Going back to the 1850 census for Eldred Township , Jefferson County, I find a GRINDER family with daughter, Margaret, age 16 , next to James PENDLETON, Daniel PENDLETON's father. Both the GRINDER family and the PENDLETON families came from NY state. Since Eldred is pretty close to Clarion County, and my William Albert DAILEY's death certificate lists him as being born in Clarion County to William DAILEY and Margaret GRENDER, and due to the PENDLETON and LOWERS connection, I really believe that Margaret GRINDER, is Margaret DAILEY, is Margaret LEEPER. Does any one have any information that would help me prove that I am on the right track. Any information on the families listed above would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time. Paula Pompeii
HI Marilyn, I was going through some old e-mails and I come accross this one of yours.Did you ever find the information you were looking for?In trying to help you,I checked my 1870 Pa Index (I dont have 1860) and there is no HUGH H GROVE or NANCY.I also have the new LDS 1880 Total Index and Census and I find a Hugh U.Grove age 34 and Nancy J.Grove age 27 with two sons,Victor age 7,and Clarence age 4.They were in Troy,Crawford County. I find NO Oren's, I did find a few Scott's,one born in 1865.In 1880 he is listed with John Mottern and wife Harriet in perry,Jefferson County. He is 15 yrs and listed as "Other".Was Luther Mitchell his brother in law?I have printed out a few pages and if you send me your mailing address,I'll mail them to you. What it looks like is the Hugh Graove I mentioned earlier is not the Parents. They apparently died after 1860 and the kids were farmed out.It looks like Oren Scott and Mary Grove were twins b.1865 and had an older sister Lizzie (Elizabeth?)who married Luther Mitchell.I hope this helps.
