We have a William Paisley who was born circa 1795 at Abbeytown which is a few miles west of Carlisle. He was my fiancee's 3 x great grandfather. I have quite a detailed tree with his decendants on. The family was and still is farming. There are Paisleys in Carlisle / Longtown / Gretna areas but they appear to be a totally different family. I have never been able to verify William's birth or his marriage to Mary Birbeck. Thomlinson as I expect you know is a common local name.
