Indiana Weekly Messenger Indiana, Pennsylvania Thursday, April 23, 1931 Mrs. Lida Detar Mrs. Lida Detar, aged 73 years, died at her home on West Church street, on Sunday evening from a complication of diseases. The deceased, who was a daughter of Alexander and Nancy Jane Balentine, resided in Apollo for many years before locating in Indiana 11 years ago. She held membership with the First United Presbyterian church of town, and the Women's Missionary Society and the Women's Bible Class of the congregation. The funeral services were conducted at her late home this forenoon by her pastor, Rev. J. J.McIlvaine, and interment followed in the Blairsville cemetery. She leaves two sisters, Mrs. Stella Pringle, of town, with whom she resided, and Mrs. D. L. Ross, of Blairsville, and a brother, William Balentine, of Brackenridge. Mrs. Thomas Dick Mrs. Sara Dick, aged 73 years, widow of the late Thomas Dick, died at the home of William Borland, on the West Pike early this morning, with a complication of diseases. She was a native of Rayne township and following her marriage to Mr. Dick located on a farm near Heshbon, I where she resided for a number of years. She was a member of the First United Presbyterian church of Indiana. Her husband died at the Borland home about a year ago. Funeral arrangements had not been completed at noon today. Mrs. Lucinda E. Grumbling Mrs. Lucinda E. Grumbling died on Saturday night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. E. Shaffer of East Philadelphia street, where she had resided for over a year. The deceased, who was the widow of T. A. Grumbling, was a daughter of William and Elizabeth Roberts, and was born in the vicinity of Pine Flats, October 16, 1854. She spent the greater part of her life in that section of the county, having resided at various times in the vicinity of Spruce, Starford, Clymer and Heilwood. She was a woman of beautiful christian character and held membership with the Nebo Presbyterian church. The funeral services were conducted on Tuesday by Rev. Chas. Williams, of town at the Shaffer home, followed by additional services in the Salem church. Interment was made in the church cemetery. The children surviving are Mrs. J. E. Shaffer, Mrs. Blanche Kerr, Mrs.: Edith Engle and Vallie Grumbling, all of town. and Gilbert Grumbling, of Denver, Colo. She also leaves 15 grandchildren, a brother, William Roberts, of Heilwood, and a sister Mrs. Etta Heilman, of Kittanning. Matthew Lewis Matthew Lewis, who died on Friday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ebert Brewer, of Rossmoyne was a lifelong resident of that community, where he was engaged in farming and blacksmithing until failing health compelled him to retire. The deceased, who was aged 76 years, four months and eight days, was a son of the late David and Susan (Smiley) Lewis. He leaves his widow, Mrs. Elizabeth Wells Lewis, and these children: Mrs. Ebert Brewer, of Rossmoyne; Mrs. Lula Walker, of near Smicksburg; Mrs. Pearl Greiner, of town; . Clair Lewis, of Renton, Wash.; Orville Lewis, of Jeannette; Earl Lewis, of GeorgevilIe, and Murray Lewis, . at home. He also leaves 25 grandchildren and six great grandchildren and these brothers and sisters: Smiley Lewis, of Hamilton; Joshua Lewis, of Smicksburg; Mrs. Ella Bender, of Rossiter, and Mrs. Jennie Prugh, of Atwood. The funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon in the Smicksburg Lutheran church by the Pastor, Rev. J.B. Troutman, and interment followed in the church cemetery. A. B. Lyda Funeral services were conducted in the Penn Run Presbyterian church on Saturday afternoon, followed by interment in the Harmony cemetery, for A. B. Lyda, who died on Thursday at his home in Homer City. The deceased, who was a son of Joseph and Nancy Lyda, was born June 25, 1853, in Cherryhill township, where he was reared to manhood. Before locating in Homer City he resided in Blacklick for a period. He held membership with the Blacklick Presbyterian church. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. R. J. Roberts, of town, and Rev. Harry Prugh, of Homer City. He leaves his widow and these children: W. J. Lyda, of Blacklick; Mrs. Bell Coup of Homer City; Mrs. Gertrude Rager, of Burgettstown; Mrs. Mary Hileman, of Wheeling, W. Va.; Mrs. Minnie Nolan, of Martin's Ferry, 0., and Ollie, Ruby and M. C. Lyda, residing at home. He also leaves a brother, Arthur Lyda, of North Canton, 0., and a sister, Mrs. Minnie Lennox, of Philadelphia. Mrs. Aletha Moore Lyon Mrs. Aletha Moore Lyon, a former resident of Indiana, died suddenly in Tuscon, Ariz., on Saturday. Mrs. Lyon and her daughter, Mabel, left their home in Harrisburg, March 27, for Arizona. According to word I received by friends here they reached Tuscon on Friday when Mrs. Lyon was stricken ill, and she died within 24 hours. The deceased was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. Moore, who owned and conducted Hotel Moore, Indiana, for several years. Her husband, the late John Moore, who died several years ago, was well known in Indiana, and. while residing here was employed as a printer. William Tortella As a result of a triple fracture of the skull sustained on Sunday evening, when he was hit by a Car near his home, William Tortella, aged 11 years, son of Mr. and Mrs. G. Tortella of Ernest, died in the Indiana hospital about noon Monday. The car, was driven by William Johnston, of Creekside, Indiana high school student, who was on his way home from Indiana. At the inquest conducted on Monday night by County Coroner Dr. Fred W. St. Clair, of town. the jury recommended that Johnston be held on a charge of involuntary manslaughter. He furnished bail in the sum of $1,000 for his appearance at a hearing to be held before Squire C. C. McLain, of town. While playing along the highway, near his home the lad dashed across the road in the path of the car. The handles of the car doors struck the boy on the head, resulting in a triple fracture of the skull. He also sustained severe lacerations of the throat and neck. He was unconscious when picked up and never rallied before he passed away. The funeral services will be held in the Ernest Catholic church on Thursday forenoon and interment will follow in the St. Bernard cemetery, of town. ************************************************************* CENTER TOWNSHIP TEACHERS CHOSEN FOR 1931-32 TERM Complete Corp's of Instructors Elected at Recent Meeting of Directors At a recent meeting of the board of school directors of Center township teachers for all the schools in the district, which is one of the largest of the rural districts, were chosen for the 1931, 1932 term. The vacancies to be filled are for the Kennedy and New Athens schools and the principalship of the Iselin schools.
