Yvonne, I don't remember what year it was - but my mother told me of the last hanging she remembers that was in the Indiana County Jail - probably in the 20s - the hanging was carried out by a Sheriff Jefferies (father of a later Sheriff Jefferies in Indiana County).. the main point was that the man was dying at the time and the hanging had to be carried out before the man "cheated the Hangman"... Also the Sheriff would not get his hanging fee if he didn't hurry. The man was unconscious at the time of the execution.. The papers at the time said it was a black mark on the county that would never be forgotten.. I guess they were overstating the fact...
