I was able to locate Michael Sr., along with Michael Jr.,who appears on the 1860 census.. The boys in that family were Henry, Michael, and hartman. No Johns. The 1840 Census for Mahoning Township, prior to splitting up into 4 smaller townships, lists Michael Knauf, spelled Knoff, and John Knauf, spelled Knoff, 5 spaces apart on the census. The township was aparsly settled at that time, so the distance may not have been close. I had falsly assumed that this was the John Knauf of the 1871 map, but it appears that John of the 1840 census must have died by that time, because he was 40 and 50 in 1840. So is the John of the 1871 map the John of the 1860 census, and 14 at that time??? I don't know, but it doesn't appear that he would have been wealthy enough by 1870 to have paid to have his name included on the map at 24. I checked census up through 1860, should have checke! d the 1870 as well. Dick
