They lived near each other in Bedford County and moved to Indiana County about the same time. Buterbaugh and Bartlebaugh girls married into the same family. After Y-DNA testing 3 Bartlebaughs, we found that the one Bartlebaugh that had gone by the name Purtlebaugh in 1700s was from the same family and connect in the mid 1700s. That was the result we were after. Then the results showed that Bartlebaugh was not part of the Puterbaugh or Buterbaugh family line. Then we tested 2 Buterbaughs, 2 Puterbaughs and 1 Puderbaugh. I know this is a small number of people but we did get interesting results. I am puting here the letter written by one the people tested that will explain some importanting information that might change the direction of your research. In short, the Md Puterbaughs are a whole different family than the New Jersey Puterbaughs and the various spellings that they use. For many years Dan kept trying to find a connection and now we know that there is not one unless you go back maybe 10,000 years. They do have the same Haplogroup and probably came from the same general area in Europe. UpDate on Puterbaugh/Buterbaugh DNA If you have read Julia Marshall?s info on genform re Buterbaugh/Puterbaugh DNA participants, you know that there were two individuals (#1 & #2 below) who matched 35/37. Following are the five unnamed participants: #1 ? A Buterbaugh who has a paper trail to Johann Peter Puterbaugh, the immigrant. #2 ? A Puterbaugh who has a paper trail to George Puterbaugh, the immigrant. #3 ? Me . . Dan Puterbaugh who has a paper trail to George Poterbach, b ca 1757. #4 ? A Buterbaugh who has a paper trail to an ancestor, b 1810. #5 ? A Puderbaugh who has a paper trail to George Poterbach, b ca 1757. #1 & #2 match 35/37, but NOT the other three. #3 & #5 match 35/37, but NOT the other three. #4 doesn?t match any of the others. Early researchers felt there were only two immigrants ? Johann Peter & his brother, George ? and anyone with the varied spelling of the surname descended from those two fellows. We?re told that DNA doesn?t lie; thus, the DNA results above should be proof that there were more immigrant Puterbaugh/Buterbaugh lines than just Johann Peter & George. Following is information re the ancestry of #5 and me. Records of the Knowlton, NJ, Presbyterian Church lists the baptisms of George Henrich, Joseph, JOHANNES, Andrew and Joseph. The others are listed in the ?History of Monroe County, PA?. George Poterbach, b ca 1757, m Elisa/Elisabetha Barbara Teel. Their known sons were: A) Jacob Puderbaugh, b 1810, m 1) Sally Ann Jones m 2) Sarah Patterson (Jacob is the ancestor of #5 above) B) Isaac Puderbaugh, b 1814 ? 1817, married four times I believe there are many folks in various parts of the nation whose roots started in New Jersey, those who have thought they descended from Johann Peter. Since the DNA results have disproved this, hopefully, others may be interested in being tested. Rager they are referring to: A Matrimonial Meddle Margaret Rager, wife of Charles D. Rager was Thursday committed to the jail of Cambria county on a preliminary hearing before "Squire Fisher, in which the charge was docketed adultery. The information was made by Mr. John Rager, brother of Charles and from the evidence adduced it seems that Margaret left her home in Cambria borough about the 3rd of March last in company with a somewhat notorious individual of Prospect named Patrick Scott. The Johnstown Tribune gives the following particulars: They commenced housekeeping at Cokerton, a village nearly a mile distant from Blairsville, and seemed to be enjoying the situation up until yesterday when Constable Harris arrested the woman upon a warrant to give bail for her appearance, in the sum of $200, so 'Squire Fisher committed her, and she was taken to the county prison last evening by Deputy Sheriff Kinkead, to await a trial by jury. Patrick Scott is a very bad man, and it is a great pity that he cannot be properly punished for his misdoings. About six years ago he was married to a female who went by the name of "Moll Scott," but who had a husband living in Blairsville. The ceremony of uniting them in wedlock was illegal, as a matter of course, but the young man to whom she was legally married took advantage of her bigamous transaction, and procured a divorce. (Indiana Weekly Messenger 1881 May 4.) I love the way everything was blamed on Margaret, like Patrick was innocent.
