What is the best way to figure out relationships between family members when it starts to get complex? Is there some easy to figure out chart or table available? As an example, what would my relationship be to my grandfather's cousin's granddaughter? What would my relationship be to HER daughter and HER granddaughter?? For lack of a better description, I guess they're long-lost distant cousins, but I'd like to find a way to better describe the relationship. Thanks, Sue in Virginia

There are differing opinions about naming "cousins," but in the first case, you would be third cousins with your grandfather's cousin's granddaughter. What I would call your relationship to her daughter and granddaughter is third cousin once removed and third cousin twice removed. It's fairly easy to figure out if you make a parallel list tracing your lineage and their lineage: Your Great- Grandfather His Sibling / / Your Grandfather Cousin / / Your parent Second Cousin / / You Third Cousin / Child of third cousin / Grandchild of third cousin Of course, you can always look for a chart, as other listers have mentioned!
