A shocking tragedy occurred at Glen Campbell last night between 9 and 10 o'clock, resulting in the almost instant death of Policeman William Cunningham and threatening the life of Joseph Bennett, who, if he lives, must answer to the grave crime of murder. The details of the tragedy were sent to the PROGRESS by telephone this morning. Last evening about 9:30 o'clock Policeman William Cunningham attempted to arrest Joseph Bennett, who had been breaking the peace of the town by discharging a revolver several times in the street. Bennett was intoxicated and boldly riding through the town flourishing a revolver. The officer found his man near Gardner's hardware store and just as Policeman Cunningham caught him Bennett shot, the ball entering Cunningham's breast in the region of the heart. The injured man ran a few feet away and fell and when he was picked up he was dead. Bennett then ran down the street and fired a shot at Mr. Merle Miller and Miss Nora Smith, daughter of Kinsley Smith. The bullet struck the young lady's hand, causing a serious injury of the member. She will likely lose a finger. Edward Fowler, who had attempted to take the revolver from the young man, narrowly escaped being injured. Bennett shot at him twice but he escaped both bullets. Just in front of the Commercial Hotel, Bennett, who had doubtless realized the crime which he had committed, attempted to take his own life. He shot himself in the abdomen and then ran the length of a square, when he fell. The man was still living thin morning at 11 o'clock and will likely recover. If his injuries prove fatal it will prevent the trial of another murder. The murderer is a young man of only 19 years and is a son of James Bennett. His victim was aged 39 years and is survived by a wife and one child. An inquest will be held on the dead body this morning. New Item - 18 May 1898 - Indiana Messenger - BENNETT, the Glen Campbell murderer, saved the county a nice bill of expense by killing himself. The Murderer Dead - Jospeh Bennett, the man who shot and instantly killed William Cunningham at Glen Campbell last week, and then sent a bullet into his own body, died of his wounds within 24 hours.
