A son of John E. and Bertha Campbell Harkins, he was born Oct. 15, 1884 in Black Lick. Mr. Harkins was a lifelong resident of Black Lick, the oldest member of the Black Lick Vol. Fire Dept.; and was a member of the LOOM No. 187, Blairsville. He was retired from the Penn Central Railroad in 1949. Surviving are the following children: John, Charles, Mrs. Mary Baker and Mrs. Ruth Bishop, all of Youngstown, Ohio: George, Chicago, Ill.; Mrs. John (Jean) Mader, Pittsburgh: Mrs. Willard (Pearl) Shearer and Mrs. Melvin (Charlotte) Clawson, both of Black Lick: 20 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Olive Fairbanks Harkins in 1925; two children: James and Grace Mardis; two brothers: Charles and Gillis Harkins; and a half-sister, Kathryn Harkins. The family received friends from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday night at the Richard L. Shoemaker Funeral Home, Blairsville where services will be held today at 2 p.m. with a grandson, Pastor Vaughn Taylor, officiating. Interment will follow in the Luther Chapel Cemetery, Coral.
