    1. [INDIANA] Harry Stephen Gibson
    2. To any interested persons: I've been trying to find information on a Hiram Gibson, a s/o Thomas Gibson and Margaret E. Ow, for a few years now. I could not find him anywhere. Well, I finally found him. This was what I knew of Hiram Gibson: He was born about 1884, and left home at the age of 16. When he was 21, he was living somewhere in the mid-west, and eloped with a 16 year old girl. Her father was outraged and had the marriage annulled. The girl remained at home, and Hiram went to California. When the girl was 21, Hiram returned and claimed his wife and daughter and went back to CA. I have searched through the census', trying different parameters. This last time in the CA 1930 census, I tried: Gibson, age 46, born in PA. The result was a Harry S. Gibson, age 46, living with his daughter, Lucille, age 15. The daughter was born in CA, but her mother was born in Illinois. I went to the 1920 census and looked up Harry S. Gibson: Gibson, Harry S. 38 PA PA PA Nellie 28 ILL OH IND Eva 10 ILL PA ILL Lucille 5 CA PA ILL Now this is what I would expect, if this were HIram Gibson, and I was starting to wonder if he had changed his name. I still needed positive proof, so I went to the California Death Index. I just used: Gibson, born PA, lived in CA, father surname was Gibson, mother's maiden name, Ow. I think the name Ow would be the real clincher, as it is not a common name. Well, the result was a Harry Stephen Gibson, born October 14, 1883, and died January 22, 1940. In the Will of Thomas Gibson, Harry is called HIram, and Thomas Gibson died in 1918. So, maybe Hiram did change his name to Harry S., but his father still still went by Hiram. I'll still dig for more proof. Just thought I'd share this, as isn't this the way things go in genealogy. -Gary T. Gibson
