Great detective work following the census trail. Log cabins were often built alongside creeks, ponds, springs or other water sources if possible. There may be a detectable depression in the ground for many years after the destruction of a log cabin. If you find a spot that looks likely, use a metal detector for nails and other metal objects. Depending on the terrain, a photograph from the air of the area just after sunrise or before sunset on a sunny day may reveal man made features such as old building sites. The low angle of the sun permits a side view of depressions and rises in the ground that may not be ordinarily detectable on the ground.
