Joseph Pershing Resided Center Twp., Indiana County, Pa. Grandfather of Gen. John J.Pershing. Farmer. Moved from Westmoreland to Indiana Co. c. 1838-39.In 1862 the Indiana Co. Court adjudged him "a lunatic" and appointedRichard S. Clawson, trustee, to sell 50 acres of Joseph's 177-acretract on 2 May 1862 "for his support and maintenance and for thesupport and maintance of his family and education of his children."Said 50 acres was sold at public outcry to Alexander Lowman for $600. Joseph m. 5-14-1833 Elizabeth Davis (1813-39) & 1-17-1843 Phoebe Davis(1816/7-6-1899) cousin of Elizabeth: John F. (3-1-1834/3-16-1896),father of Gen. John J., m. 3-22-1859 Ann E. Thompson, moved to MO where Gen. John J. was b. 9-11-1860; Phoebe (5-6-1835/12-7-1837);Elizabeth J. (8-22-1837/3-23-1896) m. 1-13-1858 Wm. H. Griffith,Children of Joseph & Phoebe: Angelina (11-13-1843/2-8-1885) m.1-1-1869 George W. Crissman: Martha (5-19-1846/1-19-1861): James G.(6-7-1848)/4-13-1906)m. (1) 9-22-1870 Martha E. Carnahan, (2) Sarah A.(Anthony) Fulton 3-15-1894; Maria (6-23-1851/2-25-1860). After Joseph's death John F. & Eliza J. surrendered their claims tothe residue of Joseph's estate (78 Acres) on 7-16-1872 to James S. &Angelina for $400.00. Frederick Pershing (1724-1792), first of the family in America, camec. 1749 from Alsace, Germany and m. Maria Eilzabeth Weygandt. Theymoved 1773 to Westmoreland County [PA] . Their nine children were Christian. Peter, Frederick Jr. m. Ann McGee, Conrad, Daniel(7-6-1769/9-28-1838) m. Christina Milliron, Abraham, Rosanna,Christina and Elizabeth.Daniel was the father of our subject.
