County Strip Mine Fire Claims Life Of Commodore Miner Saturday COMMODORE -- A father of 12 children died at Indiana Hospital Saturday evening from third degree burns suffered Friday afternoon while working at a coal-stripping operation in Green Twp. Seward Ferrier, 46, of Commodore R. D. 1. succumbed at 7:50 p.m., Saturday, as a result of the Friday afternoon mishap at the Shick Coal Company strip mine, located between Clymer and Commodore. The miner died of third -degree burns of the chest, arms, face and head, according to Dr. F. J. Kellam, Indiana physician. The victim was said to have been oiling the mechanism of a large diesel power shovel when his clothing suddenly burst into flames. Fellow workmen said they heard the man screaming and saw flames enveloping his body. Workers rolled the victim on the ground in order to quell the flames. Mr. Ferrier, and oiler at the strip job, was admitted to Indiana Hospital at 3:30 p.m. Friday and remained in a critical condition. He had worked on strip mine jobs in Indiana County for the past 12 years and was employed by the Shick company for the past 18 months. Indiana County officials and state mine inspectors planned a further investigation today. A complete obituary can be found on page six of today's Indiana Evening Gazette. Page 6 of the paper SEWARD BLAINE FERRIER 46, died in Indiana Hospital June 26, at 7:50 p.m. from burns received at 3 p.m. the previous day while working on some strip mining near Commodore. A resident of Green Township, Commodore R. D. , where he was born June 10, 1908, he was a son of Robert and Miriam Griffith Ferrier. He is survived by his wife, Lila Mae Rager Ferrier, and six children; Miss Lula Belle, Daisy Ruth, Amos William, Carlyle, Helen Louise and Mary Catherine all at home; also by two brothers, Aaron M. Ferrier of Clymer and W. Ross Ferrier of Indiana. Friends will be received at the Rairigh Funeral Home, Hillsdale, until 2:30 p.m. (DST) Tuesday, June 29, the hour of service in the Funeral Home. The Rev. L. M. Bennett will officiate with interment following in Manor Cemetery near Penn Run.
