    1. [PA INDIANA] Help Save Bushy Run Battlefield
    2. Georgia
    3. I just read an article about a group that needs support for the Bushy run Battlefield." Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission announced that Bushy Run was one of six historical sites that the state no longer can run because of budget cuts." See full article at. http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/news/westmoreland/s_635296.html Please pass on the word so they get the support they need to keep Bushy Run open for the public. It is one of the main historical sites in Weestmorelanad county. Georgia Halloran

    1. Re: [PA INDIANA] PAINDIAN Digest, Vol 4, Issue 116
    2. OBIT - Indiana Messenger- 13 October 1899 ?"Mortuary Record. Elizabeth Black Mrs. Elizabeth Black died at the home of her son, David S. Black, at Ebensburg, September 24, 1899 aged 91 years and 10 days. She was born in Westmoreland county, near New Alexandria, September 14, 1808, and came to this county when about grown up with her parents, Jacob and Elizabeth Roof. At the age of 22 years she married Peter Warner, of Armstrong county. To them were born three children - a daughter who died in infancy; J.H. Warner, who lives in Ebenezer, this county, and J.W.Warner, who lives near Indiana. When J.W. was one and one-half years old their father was killed by falling from the roof of a barn he was building. Mrs Warner remained a widow for five years and then married Samuel Black who died eight years ago. To them were born four children- Hannah, of Marion Center; Ann, of Cookport; John, of Oklahoma; and David of Ebensburg. Her prayer has been answered for several years that she would not be sick long to be a burden in any way and it was answered, for she died without a struggle." So it appears by this that the other children of living with Samuel, "James, Elizabeth and Ruth", ?found in Census records are not Samuel's with Elizabeth. She would have been married to Peter Warner at the time.?Also, there is a?big age jump between these two groups of children (10 years) which also is a clue they are not Elizabeth's children. Since the obit listed her children from a first marriage and included children not living, I would think that any non-living children to Samuel and Elizabeth would have also been listed. ?

    3. His name was Frederick [H.] Beck -- on the ship's manifest, he is 'Johann Friedrich Heinrich Beck'. [After the CW, he was 'Henry F. Beck']. I'm told this was common -- the name changing; as well, that the Lutheran German naming tradition of the 19th century was all of the sons were given the same 'Christian' name (often Johann), never used, & then one or two other names which were apparently used interchangeably? He was born in Germany [Thuringen?] in 1844 -- immigrated to Indiana, PA w/his siblings & parents, Godfrey ['Gottfried' per the ship manifest] & Christina ['Christiane' on ship manifest] Beck in 1853? According to his obituary (in 1929), he lived on a farm in Indiana County in his early years, later met & married Anna Mary Logan ['member of a Pittsburgh family quite prominent prior to the Civil War', per his obit, although I can find no record of this woman whatsoever, except for her death certificate, & census data after marrying 'Frederick/Henry']. Per census data [1870+] he lived the rest of his life in Pittsburgh, although according to his wife's death certificate [1919], she was living in Hannistown for a few months prior to her death in Pittsburgh. I don't know if 'Frederick/Henry' lived with her in Hannistown or not. 'Frederick/Henry' is buried in Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Pittsburgh, a GAR marker on his grave. One of his sisters, Dora Beck, a dressmaker, lived her entire life, after emigrating from Germany, in Indiana County & she is buried in Saltsburg. Her obit states that brother 'Fred' of Pittsburgh was an administrator of her estate. [She died in 1911.] 'Frederick/Henry' enlisted on either July 1 or July 3 [conflicting data from 2 different pension app. documents], 1863. One of your kind & helpful Listers located the following newspaper items regarding his father, Godfrey. [But Frederick/Henry would have already been living in Pittsburgh at this time.] INDIANA MESSENGER, Indiana, PA October 14, 1874 Some party of bold thieves broke into Godfrey Beck's establishment on North 5th street, on Saturday night last and carried off a considerable quantity of very vile whisky. **************** INDIANA DEMOCRAT, Indiana, PA March 18, 1875 Court Proceedings. In the Quarter Sessions Court, the following cases were disposed, to wit: Com. vs. Godfrey Beck, selling liquor without license. Plead guilty. Sentenced to pay a fine of $50 to the school district of Indiana borough and costs. Com. vs. Godfrey Beck, selling liquor to minors. Plead guilty. Sentenced to pay a fine of $25 and costs and imprisonment in county jail for fifteen days. *************** INDIANA WEEKLY MESSENGER, Indiana, PA May 5, 1880 DIED. BECK - On May 3d, 1880, in this borough, Godfrey Beck, aged 63 years. >From the "Treasures of the Past" website: Greenwood Cemetery, White Twp., Indiana Co., PA Beck/Bech Godfry b.
