    1. [PA INDIANA] Lulu Williard Cressly & John Lutman
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: RMurray99 Surnames: Lutman Cressley Williard Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.indiana/6446/mb.ashx Message Board Post: 14 Jun 1911 - Indiana Evening Gazette BIGAMY CASE FULL OF INTEREST Fair Defendant Intimates That She Was Drugged on Fateful Day The case next called was that of the Commonwealth vs. Lulu Cressly charged with bigamy. The Commonwealth called the following witnesses: John Lutman, B. F. Keatting, Kellar Harris, Nellie E. Boucher, Elmer Cressly, H. M. Con rath, Squire Munshower, Lon R. Adams, A. C. Shank and J. A. Grossman. The commonwealth claimed that the defendant, had been married to John Lutman in Ebensburg in the spring of 1909, the ceremony' having been performed by a minister there. Lutman testfied to this effect and a marriage certificate was offered in evidence, but was not admitted. Nellie E. Boucher, who was employed in the Cookport postofflce, said that the defendant had lifted letters there addressed to Mrs. John Lutman. She said it was generally known that Lutman and Miss Lulu Williard had been married. Kellar Harris and J. A. Crossman testified that the defendant had acknowledged to them, after her arrest, that she had been married to Lutman but, because he was drunk at the time, she didn't think the marriage was legal. In her own defense Mrs. Cressly said that on the day of the alleged marriage to Lutman they left Cookport in a buggy with the intention of going to her home near Rochester Mills. He had bought her some candy, some chewing gum and a bottle of pop. The thing she remembered of that journey after having reached Lovejoy, was on the following morning when she awoke in a strange room and found herself in a bed with Lutman. He informed her that they were married, and she began to cry. On the floor were a number of empty bottles which she thought were beer bottles. Lutman was in a maudlin condition. That day they went back to Cookport and she resumed her work as a domestic in the Cressly household. Lutman visited her on several occasions, but had never contributed to her support. After two years she supposed that even if she had married Lutman, of which she professed ignorance, she was free because of his neglect, and she married Elmer Cressley with whom she was living when arrested. She denied that she had received mail addressed to Mrs. John Lutman, or that she had acknowledged her marriage with Lutman to Kellar Harris or Squire Grossman. Elmer Cressley, the present husband of the defendant, testified that Lutman had denied to him that he had married Lulu Williard ; that he had not thought that there was any obstacle to his marriage to her when they were wed in the spring. A lot of corroborative testimony was heard. The case went to the jury about 2:20 Tuesday afternoon and up to this time they have not agreed upon a verdict. The jury found the defendant guilty, but recommended her to the leniency of the court. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Hello, Roger, I have always found any information posted by you to be interesting, helpful, or both. It is kind of you to share data and it is always up to the individual who might use anything provided by another to verify both its contents and its interpretation independently through the original source document or item. Too many grab and paste, don't document and are creating a plethora of incorrect family trees, mostly on line. I know your work is careful and always enjoy seeing what you share. On another note, I did pick up the CDs for you at the LEARN family reunion. There is so much information shared at that reunion that it's a real money saver in addition to being just a good time with good people. Attendance was from among others, Canada, eastern PA branch of the LEARNs, and Montana with an abundance of information from their move west. JMasco, TX

He moved with his parents, at the age of 10, to the United States and settled at Lockhaven, Clinton Co., Pa." If this is correct, then you need to check immigration records and applications for citizenship to find out Catherine's name. George Sr, George Jr, would have both been foreign born and also candidates for immigration records. those records could be in either Clinton or Indiana County. Depends on where they applied for citizenship. If George 1817 came with his parents from Germany, that means Catherine was foreign born. Author: geneman1 Surnames: Baker, Leasure Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.indiana/6443.4.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: You are only confused because some of the people who have posted here are giving you BAD information. A couple of them should know better because they have been in this hobby for years. I've said this once to them and I will say it again. Vernon, Roger and others PAY ATTENTION!!!!!! She needs additional information about Catherine, wife of GEORGE BAKER Senior. I have already posted her birth and death dates here. Again, I repeat, PAY ATTENTION!!!! The piece Vernon posted about George Baker Jr. says he was born in Germany. Which comes the conclusion that George Baker Sr. was born their too. Where George Sr.'s wife Catherine was born will be a real bear to find out. The records for that time period, that far north in the county are miserable at best description unless you can find church records that list her maiden name. You might luck out and find an early deed. Or George Senior's will. I am not repeating myself which means YOU aren't listening either. You need a search of the Courthouses in Cambria and Indiana Counties for both wills and deeds for George Senior. And the ASSUMPTION is that John Baker was a son of George Sr. and a Brother to george Jr. I say assumption because I have not looked at the 1850 census which may or may not indicate anything. Your best bet would be to find obituaries for John and George Jr. to confirm relation. Have you gotten the BAKER file from the Indiana County Historical Society yet? Give it a shot. Another clarification. Peter Leasure took over the farm of george Baker Sr. when he died. If George Baker Jr. got it from leasure it was simply gaining back what was once theirs.
