Spent many memorable moments recalling the history of this line and my personal experiences that paralleled the rail system. Cush Cushion Creek - baptized in it. Cherry Tree - had family that lived there - 5 male cousins to the same Uncle [Thomas Fleming]. Commodore - High School there. In my years the track was extended to the Clymer Brick Yards. Near Dixonville - Tracks extended to Barr Slope Coal Mines. Dixonville - Recall placing pennies on the track when we heard the train coming. RR Bridge in Dixonville - Several of us kids would crawl down through the ties on ! the bridge that was literally in our back yard and sit there 24 - 36 inches below the train - hoping that the engine would not let out steam while crossing over us. So many memories. The tracks did not cross my frequent cross country runs to Commodore High School but went down near Buck Run where we went to church and as I was older worked repairing the coal tipple there. Thanks! Cookport, sentenced to the Western Penitentiary in 1929 after he pleaded guilty to being in a gang which burned the feet of an aged woman with matches in an attempt to learn the hiding place of money, was refused today by the State Pardon Board in Harrisburg. Cook was sentenced by Judge J. N, Langnam on November 25, 1929, to serve from seven to 14 year in the penitentiary on charges of felonious entry, larceny, pointing firearms and aggravated assault and battery. He, Clyde Carney and David Callahan were alleged to have gone to the home of Mrs. Tillie Buterbaugh in Green Township, during the absence of her son in the barn, and to have tied her and burned, her with matches in an unsuccessful attempt to obtain money. When the son returned, it was alleged, he also was tied while being threatened with a revolver. Carney also was sentenced to the penitentiary and has since died, according to the sheriff's office, and Callahan was sent to Huntingdon'Reformatory. 27 May 1940 - Indiana Evening Gazette - JUDGE DENIES BOLIVAR MAN Jesse Cook, 60, Loses Fight for Release from Penitentiary PITTSBURGH, May 27 - (AP) - Jesse Cook, 60, of Bolivar, who was sentenced in Indiana County for torturing a Coalport (sic.) couple in an effort to get their money, lost today his fight for release from Western Penitentiary. He contended that two charges of felonious entry and aggravated assault and battery were contained in one indictment and that he should have received only one sentence instead of sentences of 5 to 10 years for felonious entry and 1 1-2 to 3 years on aggravated assault and battery. He asked dismissal of the shorter sentence. Judge A. Marshall Thompson overruled his plea and ordered him to serve out the remainder of the terms, which expire m November 1942. Cook was one of three men charged with burning the feet of Mr. and Mrs. William Buterbaugh, in 1929 in an attempt to get their money. An accomplice died in the penitentiary and the other was sentenced to Huntingdon Reformatory. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. With her feet blistered by burning matches and paper, her arms and limbs bruised by rough treatment and cords used to tie her in an effort to force the aged woman to reveal the hiding place of a sum supposed to be in the house, she Is in an extremely uncomfortable condition. Her nephew, William Buterbaugh, who resides with her, is battered and bruised from the beating he received from the would-be thieves when he refused to produce a key to a trunk in which Mrs. Buterbaugh was believed to have secreted a sum of money she was supposed to have lifted from an Indiana bank on Monday. The interior of the Buterbaugh house, both upstairs and down, was nearly wrecked by the intruders in their greedy search for cash. Drawers, cupboards and boxes were ransacked; mattresses and pillows were torn open and their contents scattered about the house during the two hours the aged woman and her nephew were mistreated by the attackers, who received but $5.00 in gold and less than $3.00 in change for their trouble. Shortly after midnight, Monday, William Buterbaugh was awakened by some one pounding on the front door. Asking who was there, he was given the name of a prominent resident of that section, who was said to need a light to aid him in getting his car out of a ditch nearby. Buterbaugh replied that he did not have a lantern and opened the door slightly to offer his aid. As he did so, three men pushed themselves into the room, attacked Buterbaugh, bound him and beat him severely when he refused to produce the key to a trunk said to be used as the family bank. Leaving Buterbaugh tied, the intruders went upstairs, wakened his aged aunt, pulled her out of bed, bound her and then started to torture her by burning her feet with lighted matches and pieces of paper when she insisted that she did not have a big sum of money in the house. It is said to have been the intention of Mrs. Buterbaugh - to come to Indiana on Monday and lift a sum of money from a local bank. Unable to secure satisfactory information from either the nephew or the aged woman, the attackers began to ransack the; house and finally found the trunk they had been searching for. One of them went to the cellar, secured an axe and broke open the trunk, but was disappointed with what he found there. A systematic search and wrecking of the Interior of the house followed. They finally gave up. the hunt, left with cash amounting to less than $8.00,and drove away in a car parked nearby... 7 Nov 1929 - Indiana Weekly Messenger - THREE SUSPECTS IN COOKPORT ROBBERY CASE ARE IN JAIL Clyde Carney, Jesse Cook and David Callahan Held for Torture of Miss Matilda Buterbaugh... Author: RMurray99 Surnames: Cook Bagley Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.indiana/6451/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Cookport sure did have it's share of badguys. This one ties to Blanche Bagley, mentioned in yesterdays posting as wife of George Gromley. 1 Mar 1911 - Indiana Progress - CHARGED WITH ASSAULTING FOURTEEN YEAR OLD GIRL - Jesse Cook, of Cookport, Jailed On Serious Charge Made by Girl's Mother. Jesse Cook, of Cookport ,is prisoner in the county jail charged with assaulting Blanche Bagley, the fourteen-year-old daughter, of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bagley, of Cookport on January 17. It is alleged that while Blanche was on her way to the home of a neighbor, John E. Douglass, who lives on the Craig farm Cook stopped her and grasping her around the neck, forced her into the woods, where he is alleged to have accomplished his purpose. He is alleged to have told the girl he would poison her with Carbolic acid and laudanum if she told what had occurred. A month after the alleged assault Mrs. Bagley got the story of the crime from her daughter and had a warrant issued for Cook's arrest. It was placed in the hands of Constable J. B. Reed, of Lovejoy, who secured his man on Wednesday. Cook, who had been working on a sawmill near Richmond, left on Tuesday for Cresson, Constable Reed got wind of the move and notified Cresson officials to be on the lookout for him. They did. so and Cook was arrested as he got off the train. He was brought here and taken to Cookport Thursday, where he was held for court without bail on a charge of rape at a hearing before 'Squire W. M. Munshower. Cook was returned to jail Thursday evening. 15 Mar 1911 - Indiana County Gazette - JESSE COOK GUILTY OF SERIOUS OFFENCE - Jury Returned Verdict of Statutory Rape Against Green Township Man Today - The next case called was one of the most sensational that has been heard in the local courts for a long time. This was the case of the Commonwealth vs. Jesse Cook charged with rape on the person of Blanche Bagley, a 14-years-old girl of Green township, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bagley. The girl had been visiting at the J.C. Douglass farm and was returning home when the alleged assault occurred. This was on the 17th of January. The girl told no one of the assault until a month later, when she confessed to her mother, who at once made information against Cook before 'Squire W. M. Munshower, of Lovejoy. Cook was arrested at Cresson and was taken to Lovejoy and given a hearing, being held for court. Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Douglass and their son, Willie, together with the parents of the girl, were the witnesses for,the Commonwealth. A man with whom Cook associated at various times appeared for him, but his testimony was not important. Cook took the stand in,his own defense and told a disgusting story, which only served to heighten his crime in the eyes of the court and the jury. The case was concluded, except for the arguments of the attorneys, Monday night. Tuesday morning the arguments in the case were heard, Attorneys Fee and Brownlee having been appointed by the court to defend Cook. The court charged the jury in no uncertain terms, showing plainly what his opinion of the offenses was. The jury deliberated about three hours on the case, returning a, first degree verdict of statuary rape. Note: Cook was sentenced to three years in prison.
