I learned from the grand daughter of dale states that leroy and elsie bennett states are the children of james and julia sherman bennett.Growing up I never heard of an uncle of my father named joseph. But since i started my research I did find a reference to to a james bennett born to james and julia bennett along with leroy and elsie. I plan to call dale states the cousin of my father soon and find out. but getting back to my original question i was looking for the parents of james w bennett who was married to julia sherman. I believe them to be joseph bennett 1827 to 1855 and elizabeth linkafelt.now in reference to your gustion of joseph bennett being the son of james and julia bennett i went to the 1880 census which listed james g bennett born to james and julia bennett in 1879. i was wondering the same thing my self since i never heard of him before my research started. The census records indicate that Julia had only 2 living children in 1900-1930, Roy and Elsie. There are no Bennett children born between 1913 & 1917 with those name to be found in the 1920 & 1930 Indiana County census records. Julia Ann's younger brother John H. Sherman (1860-1929) also married a Bennett, Rose Elizabeth Bennett (1862-1952). She was the daughter of Isaac Schurr Bennett (1836-1891) and Lucy Jane Reed (1834-1907). Perhaps James W. Bennett and Isaac Schurr Bennett were related. I have not yet found any linkage. Julia would have been 58 - 60 years old to have had children born in 1914-1916. Author: RMurray99 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.indiana/6457.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: News Item - 11 May 1898 - Indiana Progress - SHOCKING TRAGEDY A Glenn Campbell Policeman Almost Instantly Killed Officer Cuunningham Fatally Shnot by Joseph Bennett, Who Was Intoxicated - lnjured Man Died in a Few Minutes--The Murderer Then Shot a Young Lady and Attempted Suicide. A shocking tragedy occurred at Glen Campbell last night between 9 and 10 o'clock, resulting in the almost instant death of Policeman William Cunningham and threatening the life of Joseph Bennett, who, if he lives, must answer to the grave crime of murder. The details of the tragedy were sent to the PROGRESS by telephone this morning. Last evening about 9:30 o'clock Policeman William Cunningham attempted to arrest Joseph Bennett, who had been breaking the peace of the town by discharging a revolver several times in the street. Bennett was intoxicated and boldly riding through the town flourishing a revolver. The officer found his man near Gardner's hardware store and just as Policeman Cunningham caught him Bennett shot, the ball entering Cunningham's breast in the region of the heart. The injured man ran a few feet away and fell and when he was picked up he was dead. Bennett then ran down the street and fired a shot at Mr. Merle Miller and Miss Nora Smith, daughter of Kinsley Smith. The bullet struck the young lady's hand, causing a serious injury of the member. She will likely lose a finger. Edward Fowler, who had attempted to take the revolver from the young man, narrowly escaped being injured. Bennett shot at him twice but he escaped both bullets. Just in front of the Commercial Hotel, Bennett, who had doubtless realized the crime which he had committed, attempted to take his own life. He shot himself in the abdomen and then ran the length of a square, when he fell. The man was still living thin morning at 11 o'clock and will likely recover. If his injuries prove fatal it will prevent the trial of another murder. The murderer is a young man of only 19 years and is a son of James Bennett. His victim was aged 39 years and is survived by a wife and one child. An inquest will be held on the dead body this morning. New Item - 18 May 1898 - Indiana Messenger - BENNETT, the Glen Campbell murderer, saved the county a nice bill of expense by killing himself. The Murderer Dead - Jospeh Bennett, the man who shot and instantly killed William Cunningham at Glen Campbell last week, and then sent a bullet into his own body, died of his wounds within 24 hours. News Item - 11 October, 1899 - BOY STOLEN BY HIS OWN FATHER Sensational Story from Ohio in Which Figure Parties Said To Be FROM CHERRYTREE, THIS COUNTY Was Spirited A way In a Closed Carriage by His Father, Who It Is Claimed Deserted His Family Several Years Ago. OBERLIN, Oct. 3.- The details of a strange and sensational abduction case of unusual interest came to light here this morning. Roy Bennett, aged,17, a student of the Oberlin telegraph, school, was spirited away in a very mysterious manner. C. W. Kinney, of the Oberlin Tribune, was returning from the scene of the freshmen-sophomore class scrap early Sunday morning, when he was stopped by a young man, who gave his name as Fisher, and, in an excited manner, told Kinney the details of the case. Bennett and Fisher were returning from Oberlin, where Bennett had called upon a farmer for whom he had worked a couple of weeks during the harvest season. When about two miles south of town and walking along in the road they were overtaken by a rapidly moving carriage. When directly opposite the young men, the horse was stopped and two men jumped from the rig without a word and quickly overpowered both Fisher and Bennett. The young men were so surprised that they offered little or no resistance. Bennett was thrown into the carriage, and Fisher was left by the roadside, tied hand and foot. The horse was turned, and with the three occupants, started on a hard drive south towards Wellington. Just as the rig started Bennett shouted to Fisher to "Tell mother that father has got me." Fisher finally succeeded in getting his hands free, and then cut the rope from, around his ankles. Although badly over-come by fright, he hastened into Oberlin, where he met Mr. Kinney on the street. It was at first suggested that a telephone message be sent to Wellington, to stop the rig, but this was given upon account of the time which had elapsed and the apparent uselessness in trying to rouse anybody in the small town. >From Fisher it was learned that Bennett lived near Grant, Pa., and that about two years ago his father left his family and disappeared. It was presumed at that time that the elder Bennett went to the Klondike. At any rate the family lost all-trace of him until recently, when a letter was received from him, marked Sedalia,Mo. Manager Peaks of the Oberlin telegraph school, stated that Saturday afternoon a man of good appearance and apparently about 43 years old, called at the office and made particular inquiries concerning the exact where abouts of Bennett. As the school was not in session Saturday, Mr. Peake could not inform him definitely, but told the man that he had heard Bennett say something about going out to Pittsfield Saturday afternoon. The man left after a few general remarks, and nothing more was seen of him. But it certain that he did not procure a rig from any of the local stables. Mr. Peake knows nothing about Bennett's friend, Fisher, except that Bennett had once or twice spoken of a young man who lived near Shawville, between Elyria and Cleveland, but who formerly came from Pennsylvania. Mr. Peake knows very little about; Bennett and his family connections,as he was extremely reticent and never associated with any of his fellow students. At times he was absent from his work for a number of days. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. There should be some kind of court record or keep looking in newspaper for more articles. I found some court records of a gggrandfather, we think, who was involved in a fight on a riverboat. We have been trying to find a newspaper article, but can't find anything as we can't find any newspapers for 1841-1843 in Indiana Co. A cousin and I were in Indiana over a year ago and found a lady, and I can't remember what dept at the courthouse, who found the court record and was very helpful.
