Anyone researching early Mitchells of Indiana Co. PA Olathe First United Methodist Church (now Grace UMCt) of Johnson Co.KS just published a history book and one of the early pastors from 1888-1890 was William J Mitchell, born near Shelota, Indiana Co. PA Sept 16 1835. There is a nice professional and military biography in it about him I will copy and share if anyone wants it, unfortunately it does not tell anything about his parents or siblings. He attended the Elders Ridge Academy and preached the Elderton circuit before moving to Kansas. Married to Katie D Deal of Lawrence KS in Lawrence KS in 1881. Had a daughter Edith, according to the 1900 Census where they were living in Marysville, Marshall Co. KS. Katie was listed as also being from Pennsylvania. He may have had family in Meadville in 1910 as he was planning on visiting there right before his death (from pneumonia). Barb

He married Sarah Stevens(Stephens) and the Wiers have married into the Patterson family several times back in the 1750 - 1850 time frame. I don't think it coincidental that all these names just happen to appear together. Joseph was of Scotch/Irish descent. Was married by 1812 and living in Covington, Campbell Co. Ky. Here is my problem. One of my paternal 3rd great grandmother's maiden name was Carney. She was Elizabeth born March 10, 1810 Pa.(I think in Armstrong Co.) She died Aug. 19, 1898 and is buried in the Homestead Cemetery, Allegheny Co., Pa. She married Reynolds Laughlin Jan. 8, 1829 Armstrong Co., Pa. A cousin thinks Elizabeth's first name may have started with an M. My paternal great grandfather, one of Elizabeth's grandsons, had very high cheek bones and his aunts would say those came from the Indian grandmother. The Carney line I've researched, I believe yours, has native American ancestry and lived in Armstrong and Indiana Co. Pa. same as some of mine. Joseph Carney b. 1818 and son of John Carney and Mary Vensel was married to Amanda or Nancy Snow an Indian woman, according to some members of that family. Joseph also had brother's Philip and Johnston. Since Elizabeth fits into the ages of these men, she could be thei! r sister but I haven't been able to prove it. Of course, if the Native American ancestry is true then it would need to be John Carney, father to Joseph,Philip and Johnston, who married an Indian. I have John Carney's wife as Mary Vensel (source- Memoirs of Allegheny County Page 337). From Rev. War applications for a pension I have Patrick married to Mary Russell as John's parents. Dear Listers, Recently I have been attempting to gather information about the siblings of my direct ancestors, many that lived in Indiana county and eastern Armstrong county. My great grandmother's sister Elizabeth, married Reuben Farren [1825-], son of Charles and Elizabeth or Mary Farren. I think Elizabeth______ was probably the 1st wife and Mary the second, unless the mother went by both names. I have census and newspaper info that has given me several answers, but there needs to be more definitive information. These particular Farren families lived in Washington Twp. and were farmers. After Mary Farren dies about 1877, Reuben settles her estate and by 1880 he has moved his family in Dixon County, Nebraska. This may have been because of his service in the Civil War, with reward of land in Iowa as compensation. I find them in a state census in 1885 and then they disappear. Later I find his son James D. Farren and wife Lillian J. Fish Farren in the surrounding area, where Sioux City, Iowa, Nebraska, and Missouri seem to connect. I cannot find any reference to Reuben, Elizabeth or any of their other children, deaths, marriages, or any newspaper info. I am also a little uncertain of Charles Farren [1780-1870] family. If anyone is working on these families I would like to share info and find more certain answers. Thanks for taking time to read this and have a good week. Susan E located in northern Indiana, {state}

Hi Elizabeth and Gary, Just dug out my dad's discharge, it says in the first box, under Arm or Service, AAF (Army Air Force). In the next box to the right it is written under Component, USA. probably US Army. Dad always said he was in the air corps...the discharge was written 6Jan46. Bill
My late husband, Ralph Gibson was in World War II. He always said that he was in the Army Air Force. He served in Iceland and helped to build an air field there. Hi Gary, We were still using envelopes that were marked War Department way into the late 50's in the Marines....kept using all the old stuff till we ran out...cannot go by forms in the Military. They used to always use up the old before ordering new, think we finally ran out of those about 1959 then got the new ones that said, Department of The Navy, U. S. Marine Corps or words to that effect. My dad was in the Air Corps as he always said but I will have to look at his discharge to see what it says...he was on Ie Shima, the small island off Okinawa where Ernie Pyle was shot and killed... Bill
*The U.S. Air Force is Established* On September 16, 1947, the United States Air Force was established a separate and equal element of the United States armed forces. The fledging Air Force quickly established it's own identity. Army Air Fields were renamed Air Force Bases and personnel were soon being issued a sassy new uniform. The "brown shoe days," were over. Organization remained pretty much the same as the Strategic Air Command, Tactical Air Command and Air Defense Command were still it's combat arms. The group organization carried over from World War II remained in place. During the Spring, SAC headquarters became ambitious and began a large expansion. On July 1, 1947, seven new Bomb Groups were activated at Andrews Field. That is, they were established on paper. But there were not enough aircraft and personnel for them to become operational. Only two of the groups received B-29s. On September 24, 1947, the 2nd Bomb Group<http://www.strategic-air-command.com/Wings/0002bw.htm>moved to Davis-Monthan in Arizona and the 98th Bombardment Group <http://www.strategic-air-command.com/Wings/0098bw.htm> to Spokane, Washington. The other five groups were nothing more than "paper tigers." They were the 44th, 90th, 303rd, 305 and 306th. They remained at Andrews - unmanned and unequipped until September 6, 1948, when they were deactivated. The only group to survive this fate was the 306th Bombardment Group <http://www.strategic-air-command.com/Wings/0306bw.htm> which moved to MacDill in August of 1948. It soon received the B-29 Superfortress.. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach<http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/m/marie_von_ebnereschenbac.html> - "Even a stopped clock is right twice a day." William, I have many different items of my fathers, and yes I can see where the confusion could occur. When my father enlisted in January of 1941, he was in the Army Air Corps. Many items of his show that in the letter head or on his ID's. He also has some things that say Air Force on them. Also, on his immunization record it is stamped: "Paul H. Gibson, Lt. Air Corps, 18 Jul 1946" So I guess the Army didn't even know what they were called back then. adios, -Gary
