My father did not have a berth certificate as we know it today but the county where he was born keep records of birth at that time so it depends on the county if they keep records and if the Doctor or parent turned it in Also some births was in the newspaper in the area ----- Original Message ----- From: "Betsy Smith" <bjsmith@arm-tek.net> To: <PAINDIAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 21, 2004 10:42 PM Subject: Re: [INDIANA] Dying at home > My father, who was born in 1905, did not have a birth certificate. The divorce record would be in the county in which the divorce took place, doesn't matter where the person was born, raised or came back to. My father, who was born in 1905, did not have a birth certificate. I believe he had to have two people who remembered his birth swear to it and have something notarized. Indiana Evening Gazette Indiana PA 08 September 1917 ZEIGLER...LYDIC Ross Zeigler and Miss Maude Lydic, both of Pittcairn, were united in marriage by the Rev. Dr. J. Day Brownlee, at his residence on Church street, Wednesday evening. The marriage was on September 5, 1917 Ross' mother was my grandmother's sister, Magdalena (Maggie) Barbara Zeigler McSweeney (Oct. 12, 1862-Sept. 20, 1915. Hi I dont know if this will help but my grandmother who was 90 in august never had one. I dont know what they did when it was time for social security but I know she was born indiana county. Michelle
As far as infants dying at home, my great uncle and his wife didn't report the death of twin infants and buried them in the back yard because they were so poor. Illegal? Yup! But who was keeping track? These twins probably only exist on paper in my research...and when someone starts digging up for the septic tank or something. I'm still trying to find records of two baby boys that were born to my grandparents, sometime between 1915 and 1924. They died as babies. I think I found the death record for one of them through church records, but the other one is still a mystery. Does anyone know what might have been the procedure during that time period if a baby died at home? Who would have been notified? I know my grandparents were very poor and lived in a company house in Montgomery Township. I will eventually try to find a death certificate, but without more specific information, it will be like looking for a needle in a haystack. Adding to the confusion is that the last name was spelled three different ways during that time period!

The Clark Studio was during the 1880's era.............I have a photo taken in 1887 by Clark. Vernon Cook
INDIANA GAZETTE INDIANA, PENNSYLVANIA 20 DECEMBER 1905: MRS. KATHERINE CLARK Mrs. Katherine Clark, formerly of this place, died at the Catholic Hospital in Pittsburg on Friday at 6 oclock from the effects of muscular rheumatism. The deceased was 47 years of age. The remains were brought to Indiana on Sunday and interred in the Catholic cemetery at 3 pm. Mrs. Clark is survived by three sons who live near Pittsburg. Mrs. Louisa Zeigler of Oak street is the mother of the deceased. Katherine Zeigler Clark is buried in St. Bernard's Cemetery. She was one of my grandmother's sisters. Does anyone know anything else about her? Has there been a Clark researcher from Allegheny County looking for his great grandmother Kate? I found a possible match in the 1880 census...a Catherine Clark with a husband George and two daughters. This Catherine was born the same year as my Catherine...and both parents were reported as born in Germany. Catherine's mother wasn't born in Germany...her father was...but they spoke German in the home. Betty Smith csmith655@comcast.net
Can anyone tell me when F.B. Clark had a photography shop at 617 Philadelphia Street? I have a photograph of Louisa Everwine Zeigler and her five daughters taken at the shop and I would like to date it. Given the ages of the women in the photo, I am assuming that it may have been taken as early as 1883 because one of the women was married in Colorado in 1884. It could not have been taken after 1905...One of the women died that year. Can someone at the genealogical society look it up in a city directory...or must I contact them directly? I believe the Rairigh family has been in the funeral business since 1915, starting in Gipsy and then moving to their present location in Hillsdale (Montgomery Township). Does anyone know who was doing funerals prior between 1902 and 1915? I know Gardner's had a funeral home in Glen Campbell, but I don't know when they established their business (they are gone now). Where would the records go (if anyplace) once a funeral establishment goes out of business?
I use wires & have been dousing for about 10 years. It helps when I am reading cemeteries as I can find if there is an empty spot. I have helped a few folks find locations of graves. I went with one lady into an open field and found two graves that the farmer didn't know was there. He had farmed the land for 18 years. Some folks also douse for water. Just an added comment about dousing. It has also been called witching. Which of course is not.
